For the last five years, VFX-savvy filmmakers trying to break through the Hollywood logjam have been making proof-of-concept short films to communicate their ideas for original sci-fi movies. But very few of these projects have managed to escape from development hell and make it onto a big screen in a studio system that is increasingly focused on branded content and pre-existing concepts. Last week, former Warner Independent executive Polly Johnsen came on to produce “The Garden” under her WB-based Polymorphic Pictures banner. A sci-fi reimagining of “Paradise Lost” that cost only $30,000, “The Garden” is a proof-of-concept short that came...

While I didn’t particularly care for Wrath of the Titans, and our podcast review didn’t exactly sing its praises, there’s a market for just going wild, and the particular lull of summer fun we find ourselves in means this isn’t a bad time to take a look at other options for your action-adventure fix.
The overall story leaves something to be desired, and the special effects eventually get to a point well beyond the law of diminishing returns, but if you’re up for letting loose, it’s certainly hard to find more action crammed into one film.
On the legitimately positive side, this is a title that benefits immensely from the Blu-Ray release’s Maximum Movie Mode, and the points you get on this one (see full list below) deliver possibly the best feature connections you’ll find in such bonuses.

Yes, the remake of Clash of the Titans was pretty terrible, and we've gotten some really big promises for its upcoming sequel, but we have to admit we're kind of surprised by this latest bit of news. A third film in the now franchise is already in the works.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Brothers, which is in post-production with Legendary Pictures on Wrath of the Titans, is developing the next installment of the franchise which was inspired by the Greek myths, even though Wrath doesn’t open until March 30, 2012.
Dan Mazeau and David Leslie Johnson, who co-wrote Wrath’s screenplay with Steven Knight and also share story credit with Greg Berlanti, have been enlisted to develop and write a treatment for the threequel, which would continue the adventures of Perseus, played by Sam Worthington.

Warner Bros. is hedging its bets with the Clash of the Titans series. The first film -- well, the first film in this current incarnation of the series -- was directed by Louis Leterrier and earned nearly half a billion dollars worldwide despite becoming a poster child for terrible post-converted 3D. That was enough to put another movie into production right quick. The sequel, Wrath of the Titans, is directed by Jonathan Liebesman, and written by Dan Mazeau, David Leslie Johnson, and Steven Knight with story credit given to Greg Berlanti. Warners must be happy with how that sequel, now in post-production, is shaping up, because Mazeau and Johnson have been hired to write a provisional Clash of the Titans 3. THR [1] says the third movie would once again feature Sam Worthington as Perseus, and that Toby Kebbell, who appears in Wrath of the Titans as Agenor, could well have a...

Despite being met with fairly average review (and a huge amount of backlash towards the awful 3D conversion) Warner Bros. decided to move ahead with a sequel to Clash of the Titans after it ended up performing rather well at the box office. Wrath of the Titans is currently in post production for a release on March 30, 2012, but the studio have already begun work on a third installment. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dan Mazeau and David Leslie Johnson (who co-wrote Wrath with Steven Knight and share story credit with Greg Berlanti) have been hired to develop and write the threequel, while Sam Worthington would be expected to return as Perseus. Their "insiders" also reveal that Toby Kebbell's Agenor would likely return in a sidekick type role, while Basil Iwanyk and Polly Johnsen will produce the planned film. Several name actors that we already knew were in negotiations to join Jonathan Liebesman's Wrath of the Titans have now been confirmed, and we have to say that the sequel is shaping up nicely!
The biggest name to sign on is certainly Bill Nighy (pictured; the Underworld series, Shaun of the Dead), who will play the fallen god Hephaestus. Joining him will be Rosamund Pike as Queen Andromeda (replacing Alexa Davalos, who played the Greek character in last year's Clash of the Titans) and Toby Kebbell, who is set to play Poseidon's demigod son, Agenor.
According to Variety the sequel, which is being helmed by Battle: Los Angeles director Liebesman, will see Sam Worthington reprise his role as Perseus alongside Ralph Fiennes as Hades, Liam Neeson as Zeus, and Gemma Arterton as Io. Edgar Ramirez (as god of war Ares) and Danny Huston (as god of the sea Poseidon) also topline the pic.

If you enjoyed Clash of the Titans, the remake not the original, then Jonathan Liebesman’s sequel – Clash of the Titans 2 – is now officially under way and being filmed. James Franco and Javier Bardem may not have joined the cast as originally touted but British thesp Bill Nighy as along with Danny Huston definitely have. We’re not sure why Wrath of the Titans has been replaced with the generic Clash 2, but it’s rubbish anyway.
Below is the full press release plus a synopsis and you might as well know it’s another post-conversion 3D job. Boo sucks to that!

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures has recently announced that production has officially started for for Clash of the Titans 2. Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson are all back to reprise their roles. We reported earlier that the sequel to Clash of the Titans would be Wrath of the Titans, but that new title is no where to be seen in this press release, so maybe they haven't settled on an official name yet.
I wish I could be more excited about this sequel, but the first film was so bad I honestly have no desire to watch this one. What do you think?
Here's the full synopsis for the film:
A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus—the demigod son of Zeus—is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius.

Just last week, we told you about Warner Bros. Pictures and their apparent fear of putting their Gods in the forthcoming sequel to Clash of the Titans up against Lionsgate’s big-screen adaptation of The Hunger Games and moving the release date for Wrath of the Titans, directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles, Odysseus) from March 23rd to March 30th, 2012.
Now, we have the official press release announcing the start of principal photography, and something interesting I noticed is the fact that the press release is still calling it Clash of the Titans 2, rather than the Wrath of the Titans, which was confirmed as the title by actor Liam Neeson back in December. Has the studio changed their mind on the title, or do they still think it’s a secret?
Check out the press release below for all the details.

Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity’s lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. With the quality of disaster films plummeting, it's baffling that we can still get excited when word gets out that there's another one on the way. Yet that's exactly why studios keep churning these films out; regardless of quality, there's something about a movie depicting mass destruction that's wildly appealing to moviegoers and I'm certainly no exception.
However, the topic of this article isn't just a run-of-the-mill destruction concept aiming to drown a weak story in CGI; this one actually has some depth. With the Gulf coast still feeling the effects of Hurricane Katrina, it's easy to forget there was ever a storm as deadly. But, back in 1900, a hurricane made landfall in Galveston, Texas and didn't subside until it claimed about 8,000 lives. Not only was the loss of life devastating, but the storm destroyed what was once known as the "Wall Street of the Southwest.

Warner Bros. have acquired an original script writer Daniel Sussman and producer Polly Johnsen, tentatively titled Galveston, THR are reporting.
Here’s the premise:
Back in 1900, a Category 4 hurricane destroyed Galveston, taking with it about 8,000 people. In the aftermath of the storm, nearby Houston rose up on the back of its oil boom, and Galveston never regained any kind of prominence.
Against the backdrop of a devastating hurricane, Galveston traces the stories of a pair of young lovers on the verge of being separated, a struggle for power among various bureaucracies and a bitter love triangle involving two brothers.
Johnsen will producer Galveston through her Polymorphic Pictures production company, while Sarah Schechter and Chris Gary will overlook for Warner Bros.
Galveston has a lot of potential, I just hope it doesn’t end up being another cheesy disaster film in the vein of Volcano or Dante’s Creek.

Hollywood has seen its share of disaster flicks like Volcano, Twister, The Perfect Storm and The Love Guru (get it?). Many of these films depicting the wrath of mother nature have stayed in modern times, but now it looks like one hell of a storm will hit the big screen way back in the year 1900. Risky Biz reports Warner Bros. has purchased the original script Galveston from writer Daniel Sussman ("The Practice") and producer Polly Johnsen (Cop Out). The film sets several stories against the backdrop of one of the most deadly hurricanes to ever hit the United States, even rivaling the death and destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina. Back on September 8, 1900, a Category 4 hurricane (that's a big one) essentially destroyed the Gulf Coast city of Galveston and killed around 8,000 people (quadruple the deaths of Katrina). Over 100 years ago the city was still growing, ...

Warner Bros. has picked up Galveston, an original script from screenwriter Daniel Sussman and producer Polly Johnsen about the deadliest natural disaster in American history, which took place in Galveston, Texas.
According to THR’s Risky Business blog, the film will revolve around a hurricane that hit Galveston, TX on Sept. 8, 1900. It was reported to be a Category 4 hurricane that completely destroyed the city, taking with it about 8,000 people (think of something more than four times the toll of Hurricane Katrina). At the time, the growing city of Galveston was the biggest city in the state of Texas. Featuring a diverse and booming port town with a multi-cultural feel, it was even sometimes referred to the “Wall Street of the Southwest,” where vacationing businessmen mingled with locals of all social classes.

Though Roland Emmerich has stamped his name all over the genre in recent years, disaster movies are timeless and much bigger than he is; even Clint Eastwood seems to be getting into the game with the depiction of the 2004 tsunami in his new film Hereafter. And while there are plenty of natural disasters happening every week to mine for Hollywood action and romance, Warner Bros. will be looking back over a century to tell the story of the country's deadliest natural disaster, the hurricane that struck Galveston, Texas in 1900. THR reports that screenwriter Daniel Sussman and Polly Johnsen have sold the original script Galveston to the studio, where Johnsen has a first-look deal. The script sounds straight from the Titanic playbook of injecting melodrama into a real-life story: there are two lovers about to be separated, bureaucrats struggling for power, and even a love triangle involving two brothers. All these...

Warner Bros. Pictures has picked up scribe Daniel Sussman's natural disaster-themed original script “Galveston" reports Risky Biz Blog.
The story revolves around September 8th 1900, the day a Category 4 hurricane destroyed the Texan Gulf Coast city and killed 8,000 people - four times the death toll of Hurricane Katrina.
As the time the booming port town was the biggest in the state and never regained that level of prominence. Polly Johnsen, who is also developing the "Excalibur" remake and an adaptation of David Peace's novel “Occupied City" for Warners, will produce.

Risky Business is reporting that screenwriter Daniel Sussman and producer Polly Johnsen are planning to make a movie about the 1900 Galveston, Texas hurricane. Warner Bros. has bought the script for the drama that would center on the Category 4 hurricane (this was before hurricanes were named) that made landfall on Sept. 8, 1900 with winds of 135 miles per hour and caused the death of 8,000 people, the third-highest number of casualties of any Atlantic hurricane. The site says that "Sussman's script traces the stories of a pair of young lovers on the verge of being separated, a struggle for power among various bureaucracies and a bitter love triangle involving two brothers." In 2007 Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, directors of the hugely successful, and Oscar-winning film, Little Miss Sunshine, announced their plans to develop a big-screen adaptation of Tom Perrotta’s novel, The Abstinence Teacher, which centres on a sex education teacher who comes into conflict with the conservative members in her town who criticise her teaching style, and support of sex before marriage.
The project slipped into limbo when Warner Bros’ independent division closed it’s doors in 2008. However, three year’s on it seems the project has come back to life, with Albert Berger, Ron Yerxa, Polly Johnsen signing on to produce, and the studio in talks with Steve Carell (Date Night) and Sandra Bullock (The Proposal) to take the lead roles. Carell would take on the role of Tim Mason, while Bullock would portray Ruth Ramsey.

Religious zealots take notice. After delivering the performance of her lifetime in a meat, potatoes and gravy Oscar winning-dish, Sandra Bullock might be going against the grain with The Abstinence Teacher, a picture filled with Tom Perrotta's trademark humor. Going toe to toe with Bullock, the proposed match-up would include the born again Christian type to be played by Steve Carell -- the project would be reuniting with the directing pairing of Little Miss Sunshine's Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. Despite being removed from the film for some time, Dayton and Faris appear to be firmly attached to the project -- as The Playlist (via Production Weekly) also mention that Lms producers Albert Berger, Ron Yerxa and Polly Johnsen are backing the project. Fox Searchlight, Focus and Summit Ent. are certainly keeping a close eye. The project was first picked up by Warner Independent Pictures label before the book was even published,...
