From 1977 into the 1990s the western music group performed as a trio, consisting of lead singer/guitarist/yodeler Ranger Doug (played by Douglas B. Green), singer/fiddler/trick roper Woody Paul (played by Paul Chrisman), and singer/bassist Too Slim (played by Fred LaBour). In the 1990s the group added accordionist Joey the Cowpolka King (played by Joey Miskulin) to their line-up and have remained a quartet ever since.

The group is usually introduced to the audience as "Ranger Doug, the Idol of American Youth", "Woody Paul, the King of the Cowboy Fiddlers", "Too Slim, the Man of a Thousand Hats" and "Joey, the Cowpolka King".
