Andy Lowe was a winner of the California Young Playwrights Contest in
1994, where his play The Cultural Hyphen earned production at the Old
Globe theater, and was praised and endorsed by David Henry Hwang and
Edward Albee. In 1995, he Co-founded the San Diego Asian American
Repertory Theatre where he was the company's Producing Artistic Director
for ten years ('95-'05) and over thirty-five full stage productions, and
countless staged readings.
In 2001 Andy helped inaugurate San Diego's first Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Month Festival ('01-'03), and has been an active board member, and participant for various Asian American community organizations including Organization of Chinese Americans, SD Alliance for APIA's, and coordinator for the Asian Cultural Festival, and Amp Asian American Music Festival. For his work he has been a recipient of various honors including two mayoral commendations, and was recognized as one of the "Top 30 most influential Asian Americans Under the age of 30" (Political Circus Magazine '01).
After receiving a grant from the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program through the California State Library, Andy, with the Asian Story Theatre, developed Dear Miss Breed('07) at the Lyceum Theatre, based on the award winning book by Joanne Oppenheim.
Founding Coordinator of the "Theatre-In-Residence Program" at the La Jolla Playhouse 2007-12. Mentor for the UCSD Asian American Theatre Festival 2007-09. Director of Production & Casting for East West Players 2013-25, where he cast and overseen over 40 productions and new works development workshops including the first post Broadway production of Allegiance starring George Takei.
After 30 years in the industry, he continues to direct for stage, consult & develop new works for plays, musicals & immersive entertainment, most notably a 2011 stage-adaptation of Joss Whedon's Dr. Horrible Sing-Along Blog, and freelance R&D projects for Walt Disney Imagineering. He also serves as a Judge and Dramaturg for the Playwrights Project along side fellow alumni Josephina Lopez, Annie Weissman, and Lauren Yee.
Having trained in various Martial arts, Andy's Stage Fight Choreography credits include 10 years of performance & choreography with Asian Story Theatre, various film and television credits, Kim's Convenience at Laguna Playhouse, Vietgone at UC Riverside, and East West Player's production of "Man of God" earning him an Ovation Nomination for Fight Direction.
