The Nominations for the 2013 Iifa (International Indian Film Academy) awards have been announced and Anurag Basu’s beloved Barfi! leads the pack with 13! Also in included in the esteemed lists are films like Gangs of Wasseypur, Kahaani, Agneepath, Vicky Donor, Paan Singh Tomar, Talaash, English Vinglish and more. The nominees in each category are voted on by members of the Indian Film Industry at the official Iifa Voting Weekend. The votes are then tallied and the final list is compiled for the popular categories. The winners of the popular categories are determined by the fans because they can vote for who they think are the best in each category at Iifa’s website.

F rom stealing his sister’s money to watch films in Bhopal to winning awards for Best Screenplay for Paan Singh Tomar-which also won the National Award for Best Film 2012-Sanjay Chouhan has come a long way. His impressive portfolio includes Saheb Biwi aur Gangster, I am Kalaam and Maine Gandhi ko Nahi Maara. Chouhan’s experience in the Hindi film industry spans an era when he was blatantly given DVDs to copy to a time when he won the Filmfare and Screen awards for his original screenplay on the life of an athlete who turned bandit.

Chouhan gives a lowdown on the fate of writers of Hindi films then and now, and some useful tips for aspiring writers wanting to break into the industry:

Content driven films have been in the limelight at all mainstream award functions this year; you won the Screen and Filmfare awards for Paan Singh Tomar.

Offbeat Bollywood films of 2012 like Barfi!, Kahaani, Gangs of Wasseypur and Paan Singh Tomar hogged the limelight at Filmfare Awards 2013 winning multiple awards. Barfi! bagged six, Kahaani and Gangs of Wasseypur won four each and Paan Singh Tomar went home with two awards.

Barfi! won the Best Film (Popular) award, Ranbir Kapoor won the Best Actor (Popular) for his work in the film, Ileana D’Cruz was awarded the Best Debut (Female) trophy, Pritam won the Best Background Score Award and Rajat Podar won the Best Production Design Award and the film was also presented with the Sony Trend-setter of the Year 2013 award.

Vidya Balan won the Best Actress (Popular) award for Kahaani, her third filmfare award. Kahaani also won Sujoy Ghosh the Best Director (Popular) Award. Sanjay Maurya and Allwin Rego won the Best Sound Design Award and Namrata Rao bagged the Best Editing Award.

The event which all Bollywood figures and film buffs look forward to every year finally took place on Sunday night! The 58th Idea Filmfare Awards was held at Yash Raj Films Studios in Mumbai, which saw the film fraternity unite to celebrate the best of Hindi Cinema during 2012. Considered by many to be Bollywood’s equivalent to the Oscars, this year’s Filmfare awards are extra special since 2013 marks 100 years since the first moving picture was made in India. There were a number of films which thoroughly deserved the awards for delivering outstanding entertainment which will be remembered for years to come. These include Vicky Donor, Kahaani, Gangs of Wasseypur and Barfi! .

Bollywood finally seems to be acknowledging the power of content-driven, small budget films, going by the 19th Screen awards and the nominations for the 58th Filmfare Awards.

At the 19th Screen awards announced on Saturday night, Barfi! and Paan Singh Tomar jointly won the Best Film award. Anurag Basu won the Best Director award for Barfi!.

Ranbir Kapoor (Barfi!) and Irrfan Khan (Paan Singh Tomar) shared the Best Actor award while Vidya Balan was declared the Best Actress for her performance in Kahaani.

Gauri Shinde was named the Most promising debut director for English Vinglish while Tigmanshu Dhulia and Sanjay Chauhan won the Best Screenplay award for Paan Singh Tomar.

On the other hand, the 58th Filmfare Awards 2012 announced nominations on Sunday. Barfi!, English Vinglish, Gangs of Wasseypur, Kahaani and Vicky Donor have been nominated for Best Film.

“My grandma never attended a script writing course. But she was an engaging story teller,” Kamlesh Pandey said enthusiastically. The 5th day at Green Screen Lab in Bhubaneshwar has a new chirpy guest who has written some of the most gripping scripts of the Indian cinema like Tezaab and Rang De Basanti. We were all thrilled and enlightened with his anecdotes and views on script writing and Bollywood screenplays. His insights provoked us to look at our scripts with a new lens. The hurdles in crossing an ocean of imagination to reach the shore with a superior screenplay, never seems to end.

Children cinema is very rare and the few good films I have seen are Iranian. The only Indian children film I have watched in the last decade was a short film called Girni by Umesh Kulkarni and a feature film I am Kalam directed by Nila Madhab Panda...

Our 17th and 18th fellow participants have arrived for the Green Screen Lab 2012. Bhubaneswar is a beautiful and an exciting place, especially on the Kiit University Campus, with the rain contributing to its scenic beauty. The 18 upcoming film writers/directors from different places around the country & abroad, and mentors with their hopes and experiences are providing the lacking excitement. I am optimistic that a couple of films will be made at the end of the workshop and very soon children from India and around the world will be able to see some good children films.

Green. That is the colour of Bhubaneswar right now. Literally. And metaphorically too – for me at least, and I am sure, for my co-participants at the International Green Screen Lab 2012, focused on developing quality screenplays for Indian children’s cinema. For an Assamese, the deep shades of green during the monsoons is nothing new, Assam and the rest of North-East India having been endowed with nature’s bounty. But it is the metaphorical green that has engulfed the campus of Kiit University in the Odisha capital that is intoxicating me at this moment – it’s the colour that has inspired this screenwriting lab (click link above for the backgrounder). And it has kind of engulfed my senses too – the idea of writing and making cinema that remains environment-friendly during conceptualisation and execution is too exciting for a person who grew up close to nature but now lives in a concrete jungle called New Delhi.

Iranian film Alafzar (Meadow) directed by Mohammad-Ali Talebi won the Golden Elephant for Best feature Film in the international category at the 17th International Children Film Festival India (Icffi), which concluded in Hyderabad on Sunday.

Chillar Party directed by Nitesh Tiwari and Vikas Bahl won the Best Feature Film in Indian section. It also bagged the Best Feature Film award from the children’s jury.

The award for the Best Indian director went to Umesh Kulkarni for Vihir. Sanjay Chouhan won the Best Screenplay for I Am Kalam.

German film Vorstadkrokodile 2 (The Crocodiles Strike Back) by Christian Ditter was named the Best Feature Film in the international category of children’s jury.

The award for the Best little director was given to Varun Haldar and Vinita Nayak for Hamare Duniya.

The seven-day film festival was organised jointly by the Children’s Film Society of India, and Central and Andhra Pradesh governments.
