Graduating from NYU in 1950 with a PhD in Zoology, she made a career teaching about and writing about sharks. She founded a marine institute for the study of sharks in Florida in 1955. She has written many best-sellers about sharks and has made numerous documentaries about them. She has received awards for her work from the National Geographic Society, the Explorers Club and the Underwater Society of America.
