Arriving on DVD tomorrow is the remake of Inside from director Miguel Ángel Vivas and co-writers Jaume Balagueró and Manu Díez. Based on the original 2007 film by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, this iteration of Inside follows a bereaved expectant mother named Sarah (Rachel Nichols) who is being tormented by an unknown woman (Laura Harring) who will stop at nothing to get her hands on Sarah’s unborn child.
Daily Dead recently conducted a Q&A with Vivas about Inside, and he discussed what initially drew him into the project, his positive experiences working with his strong female leads, the film’s ambitious finale, and more.
What was it about this project in particular that you connected with as a storyteller and made you want to take it on as a directorial project?

For roughly the first third of 2018’s Inside, I felt sympathetic towards a remake whose original “equal” is highly regarded amongst genre crowds. Yet as plot similarities fade, freedoms from comparative shackles prove themselves to be rather trivial and unaffecting. From the director of Kidnapped (a thriller I dig) and the co-writer of [Rec] (an outbreak nightmare I adore) comes a head-scratching tale of coincidental deaths on par with neither of their previously taught accolades. Points awarded for deviating from Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s brutalization so noticeably, but lordy, this is some serious “scream at the screen” kind of frustration at times.
Rachel Nichols stars as Sarah Clark, a pregnant widow trying to cope with a recent car accident that took her husband’s life. On this particular night during the Christmas holiday season, she goes to bed knowing her mother is en route and neighbors are keeping watch...

After surviving a car crash in which her husband was killed months earlier, Alysson Paradis (Rachel Nichols) is living at home alone, its Christmas eve and she is now in the third trimester of pregnancy. When a woman knocks at the door, asking to use the phone, she refuses because she doesn’t want to wake her husband. When the woman confirms that she knows that Alysson is alone and demands to come into the house, she calls the police. By the time they arrive, the woman has gone. After checking the area they advise that it is unlikely that she will come back, but a patrol car will return later to make sure she is ok.

Miguel Ángel Vivas, director of Kidnapped and Extinction, is currently in pre-production for the English-language remake of Inside, it was announced on Cineuropa. Jaume Balagueró, one of the great auteurs of contemporary Spanish horror film, has co-written the updated screenplay with Manu Díez (with whom he worked on [Rec]2 and [Rec]4), and will also serve as an executive producer. Adrían Guerra and Nuria Valls of Nostromo Pictures (Buried, Palm Trees in the Snow) are on board to produce, with shooting to begin shortly. Readers are probably familiar with the original Inside from France (written and directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo), one of the most terrifying films of recent years. A pregnant woman, living in an isolated area after the death of her husband,...

Director: Jaume Balagueró. Writers: Jaume Balagueró and Manu Díez. Cast: Manuela Velasco, Paco Manzanedo and Héctor Colomé. [Rec] 4: Apocalypse is the final film in a long running zombie film series. The original, shot in Barcelona, Spain, started in a small apartment building. Since 2007, this series has gone on to spawn three sequels and two American remakes. This found footage horror franchise continues to excite film fans. But, what of the final film? This final film offers more pulse-pounding entertainment, in a small quarantine zone (a freighter). Here, Ángela Vidal (Manuela Velasco) returns from the first two films to put an infection to rest, a true burial at sea, forever. The ensuing ninety minutes brings lots of terror and drama as [Rec] 4 ends with a bang. Fans of the series will recognize Ángela Vidal from the original title. She was the vivacious, young reporter who found herself in the middle of a biological catastrophe.

The zombie virus of the influential [Rec] franchise worked its way through the residents of an apartment building and the celebratory guests at a massive wedding reception, and in [Rec] 4: Apocalypse, it looks to ravage the crew of a ship at sea. We now have two new clips from the recently released movie, which show how handy an outboard motor can be in fighting off infected humans (and monkeys?).
“Several hours have passed since the terrible events that ravaged the old building in Barcelona. After the chaos of the first few moments, the army decided to intervene and an elite group of soldiers infiltrated the building in order to plant detonators and put an end to this nightmare once and for all. The mission is a success; quick and precise. Angela Vidal, the young television reporter who entered the building with the fireman just hours before, manages to make it out alive.

Magnolia’s genre arm Magnet Releasing has acquired U.S. rights to [Rec] 4: Apocalypse, the fourth installment in the Spanish horror franchise about an epidemic of demonic possession that’s captured on camera.
Sony put out the first Rec film in 2007 and remade it as Quarantine, but Magnet has been aboard the series since releasing the second and third films stateside. Jaume Balagueró returned to direct [Rec] 4 after co-directing the first two films following a third entry that curiously veered away from the franchise’s found-footage thrills and into horror-comedy terrain. [Rec] 4 picks up after the events of the second film as young reporter Angela Vidal (Manuela Velasco) wakes up in a high-security quarantine deep within an ocean freighter and must battle the virus on the high seas.
Balagueró co-scripted with Manu Díez and Julio Fernandez and Castelao Pictures produced the pic, which debuted in the Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness...

There are many films that utilize demonic possession as a central theme, but less common are the ones in which entire mobs of demonic undead spring up to storm the streets. Lamberto Bava's Demons and Demons 2 come to mind as suitable examples. The Evil Dead films also fit the bill, as does John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness. There are more, up to and including 2007's [Rec], a film about a deadly viral possession that differs from the many others in its sub-genre in one important way; instead of being the campy fun that is Evil Dead or Demons, [Rec] was intended to scare the crap out of you. For many, it worked, and those who enjoyed [Rec] should get ready as [Rec] 2 is just as effective.

It's 4am and I'm clearly fading, so I'll try to do this one it's well deserved justice in a brief fashion.
It would be sacrilege to watch this film without seeing it's predecessor, which, funny enough, I thought was mediocre after all the hype surrounding it. An effective little zombie film, [rec] strayed into territory which I think made it wildly popular because of where it originated, not necessarily because of it's content. However, this sequel clearly proved both director's merits as it went in a wildly unforseen direction and crushed any notion the first was a fluke, or that [rec] 2 was made just to make a buck.
I can't ruin the story, and you won't want me to. So, I'll try and tell you what little I can as I...
