His eighth grade English teacher in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, was Harriet Joan (Kelly) Radvansky, eldest sister of dancer Gene Kelly. Tom says, "Picture Gene Kelly with shoulder-length hair and you have all you need to know. They were like twins."

In 1962, he graduated from West Mifflin North High School, eight years earlier than that school's most famous showbiz graduate, actor Jeff Goldblum.

Holds a Commercial Pilot Certificate with Instrument and Multi-Engine ratings.
