Yor-El Francis is best known for his work as a Writer/Director on motion pictures, television and commercials. His feature film, "Murder in the Cassava Patch" (2012) was shot on location in his native Liberia.
Francis began his career as an Assistant Director on motion pictures and television projects.
His credits include The West Wing (1999), NCIS (2003), The Closer (2005), Crank (2006) Brothers & Sisters (2006) The Staircase (2021) as well as several other productions.
An award winning writer, Francis won the African Film Commission's top prize for screen-writing for his screenplay "Piankhi, the Prince of Egypt," a story based on the life of the ancient Egyptian Pharaoh, Piankhi. He studied writing at the Yale Writers Workshop and is a graduate of the Directors Guild of America's Producer Training Plan.
Francis was born in Monrovia, Liberia where he attended the Hilton Van Ee School and the American Cooperative School. He later attended the prestigious Sierra Leone Grammar School in Freetown, Sierra Leone where he completed his secondary education.
Francis has a rich cultural background with genetic roots in Barbados, Nigeria and Scotland. He can trace his ancestral lineage to the brig Cora, a ship carrying 346 Barbadians who migrated from the Caribbean to Liberia in May of 1865.
