While many of the biggest action movie stars working today consistently appear in straight-up carnage-filled blockbusters, lots of these performers have also tried their hands at other genres. Some of the most exciting heroes and heroines in Hollywood have also taken to sci-fi and horror, as these types of movies allow them to explore deeper themes with strong characterization and narrative intrigue. This variety in their filmography makes these stars infinitely more interesting as viewers get to see them deliver performances that go deeper than a hero who simply saves the day.
Many of the biggest action stars of the 1980s had incredibly diverse resumes, as films during that period and beyond often blended action with sci-fi and horror. While some action stars are intrinsically linked to other genres, as actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger became inseparable from movies like The Terminator, even these performers have branched out and surprised viewers with their later parts.

A new episode of the Revisited video series has just been released, and with this one we’re looking back at the 2005 video game adaptation Doom (watch it Here) – a movie that didn’t spawn the sort of franchise the game did, but there was a second movie that was released direct-to-video in 2019. Oddly, the title of that movie was Doom: Annihilation, just like the original video game adaptation of Mortal Kombat received a sequel called Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. That’s a story for another time – for now, you can hear all about Doom by checking out the video embedded above.
Directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak from a screenplay that was crafted by David Callaham and Wesley Strick, Doom has the following synopsis: Something has gone wrong at a remote scientific research station on Mars. All research has ceased. Communication has failed. And the messages that do get through are less than comforting.

Karl Urban gets a chance to redeem his past video game adaptation failure with his Mortal Kombat 2 casting as Johnny Cage. Mortal Kombat 2 builds anticipation with new characters like Shao Kahn and Kitana, setting the stage for improvement over the first film. Urban's portrayal of Johnny Cage may take a darker twist, departing from the character's usual cocky and upbeat nature.
After Karl Urban's disappointing video game adaptation with 18% on Rotten Tomatoes, the actor finally has a chance to make up for the project thanks to Mortal Kombat 2. Warning: contains plot details for Grantchester seasons 1-6 and the first two episodes of season 7.
Grantchester is commonly described by critics and viewers as a “cozy mystery”. This label, especially in regards to its seventh season currently airing in the US on PBS, is misleading. Although so far the season’s emphasis on found family is heart-warming, there are also a number of serious social and political issues underneath the unraveling of its various mysteries.
The crime-solving vicar/priest/nun is a common cozy mystery archetype. In 1950s-set Grantchester, originally based on a series of books by James Runcie, that character started out as Sidney Chambers (James Norton), a vicar with an unusual side hobby and a good friend in police inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green). Sidney served in WWII but many of his younger parishioners did not, which shaped his interactions. The series veered in a different direction from the books,...

Enjoy the Dirty Dancing–inspired holiday that vicar Will Davenport (Tom Brittney), Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green), and the gang go on in the Grantchester premiere, because the fun of couples “having a snooze” in their cabins (wink-wink) and Will canoodling by the water won’t last long. Two storylines take Season 6 of the Masterpiece Mystery! to “dark places,” says creator Daisy Coulam, beginning when gay curate Leonard Finch’s (Al Weaver) loving private life — a crime in 1958 England — is exposed. (Credit: Colin Hutton (C) Kudos/ITV/Masterpiece/PBS) “Will and Geordie see somebody suffer because the law is not always just,” Coulam says, adding that the scandal impacts every character. “But there is some hope at the end.” The second half of the eight-episode season doubles down on that theme — the cost of facing the truth — with World War II prisoner of war Geordie confronting the painful past he’s suppressed.

Keenly aware of how little time is left on her biological clock and desperate to have a baby, she stands by virtually tapping her foot while she waits for him to propose, or at least agree to get her knocked up. "The safety of London is paramount - we can't risk a bug getting into the city." Giant Pictures has released an official trailer for The Complex: Lockdown, a feature film based on the interactive sci-fi thriller full-motion video game The Complex - first released earlier this year. Essentially a feature film tie-in for the video game. After a major bio-weapon attack on London, two scientists debate whether to save a suspected terrorist’s life. However, assassins have infiltrated the building and soon our scientists find themselves with time, and options, running out. The cast includes Michelle Mylett, Kate Dickie, Okorie Chukwu, Kim Adis, Rachel Petladwala, and Al Weaver. In terms of video game movies, this looks awful. In terms of movies in general, this looks like a complete mess. Doesn't even make any sense. Skip this - it's not worth it. It’s your job to help two doctors – who are also ex-lovers – save an infected woman in this zeitgeist-y drama with eight possible endings
This zeitgeist-y interactive science fiction drama posits a timely premise hingeing on isolation. On the London tube, Clare (streaming celebrity Leah Viathan) is infected with a nanotechnology in development. Consequently, she must spend the rest of the movie in a coffin-shaped chamber within a vacuum-sealed laboratory, while Amy (Michelle Mylett) and Rees (Al Weaver), a pair of bickering, frequently irritating doctors – and ex-lovers – try to work out how to save her.
Or not. Because some of the options this game offers take the player down paths with dire consequences for poor Clare, and some don’t work out so well for Amy or Rees. As different choices are made, the game scores the user on various personality dimensions – openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism – as if this...

I was a little nervous about the current fourth season of the PBS crime drama series Grantchester, as just one episode in, we lost one of our main characters who drove the series, and was so loved. It’s a small cast, and the series has always hinged on the main two characters, played by James Norton and Robson Green, so to know Norton wouldn’t be on the show anymore, I had to wonder if it would work. Luckily, the supporting cast, and the new members including Tessa Peake-Jones, Al Weaver, and Tom Brittney have carried it into this new season of the series, and I’m happy to say it still works!
This series is so incredibly well-written and captivating. It has every ingredient to make a great dramatic, comedic, crime show, with characters we love so much. So I am happy to report we are getting another season after this one.

Keira Knightley stars as French novelist Colette in director Wash Westmoreland’s gorgeous and gripping period biopic Colette. What a marvelous film!
In late 19th- early20th century Paris, Colette broke barriers of all sorts for women. Although the story is set in Paris more than a century ago, this tale of a woman’s awakening to her own worth, her struggle to be free and be herself, and to be recognized for her own work is as thrilling as ever, and surprisingly timely.
Although the film is about a French writer, Westmoreland’s film is mostly in English. The film is a take on Colette as a feminist icon. Those who might quibble that Colette was not a feminist as much as just a woman...

This is a good news -- bad news situation. The Grantchester TV show has been renewed for a fourth season on PBS, however, season four will be James Norton's final outing as Anglican priest Vicar Sidney Chambers. Norton is in high demand, these days. He also stars as Alex Godman on McMafia, an AMC--BBC One co-production that centers on a Russian mob family living in exile in London. Grantchester, season four, will premiere on PBS in 2019 at a date Tbd. An ITV and PBS Masterpiece mystery, Grantchester also stars Robson Green as Di Geordie Keating, Sidney Chambers' partner-in-crime-fighting. Co-stars Al Weaver, Tessa Peake-Jones, and Kacey Ainsworth are also returning for Grantchester season four. Meanwhile, the production will be casting for a new...

First the good news for Grantchester fans: The ITV & PBS series has been renewed for Season 4. Now the rotten news: They will be the final episodes with star James Norton as the jazz-loving, crime-solving vicar Sidney Chambers as the actor segues to the BBC-AMC drama McMafia.
Norton, whose name has been bandied about as the next James Bond, will return to the Masterpiece series alongside Robson Green, who co-stars as his partner-in-crimefighting Detective Geordie Keating. Al Weaver, Tessa Peake-Jones and Kacey Ainsworth also star. Production begins in June in London for a 2019 premiere.
But Norton’s exit won’t signal the end of the series set in the 1950s in the English hamlet of Grantchester.
“It’s a bittersweet time for Grantchester fans, who will be cheering the return of the series but crushed to say goodbye to James,” said Masterpiece executive producer Rebecca Eaton at Wgbh Boston.
