With more and more films crossing borders and getting viewed in countries miles away from the land it was made, the idea that only a certain kind of film is made in a particular country and is thematically, aesthetically, and stylistically unique to that particular land is challenged in today’s highly connected world. These films from foreign lands not only affect how people watch or consume cinema but also how people make films.
Although such cinematic trade and influences had always been a part of any country’s cinema culture, earlier it was films only by certain masters of ‘world’ cinema that became easily available to watch, courtesy of film societies and film clubs. This, however, was limited only to connoisseurs of cinema who had access to such societies and clubs. This has changed with the advent of, firstly, the internet and various legal (and illegal) ways of accessing films,...

Sudhir Mishra’s films are intimate human dramas that illuminate the politics of everyday life and are affected by the forces of socio-political reactionism. His early cinematic creations tackled the rejection of the values, forms, performance modes, and the style of the mainstream, commercial cinema with privileged entertainment values, spectacular display, and melodrama. His out-of-the-box thought process has helped him to establish aesthetic conventions and modes of production of the Hindi film industry, and has also challenged the boundaries between what is alternative and mainstream.
What Sudhir Mishra created was a vision of cinema as an expressive art form, an inspirational form, and a sense of connectedness to a larger and serious international and niche national artistic enterprise that is motivated by the drive to know and represent the world adequately. His films did not shy away from expressing reality in its broadest sense, highlighting varied aesthetic forms, demonstrating, and...

The selection of a film from India at Cannes the year after Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine As Light” beat the odds and some rigorous competition to win the Grand Jury Prize was bound to cause excitement. When it turned out to be Neeraj Ghaywan’s “Homebound,” starring rising Hindi cinema actors Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and Vishal Jethwa, produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, one of the most iconic Bollywood studios, and as a later announcement revealed, executive produced a certain Martin Scorsese, folks were a bit gobsmacked. A heady cocktail of talents was Cannes bound.
Ghaywan returns to Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section exactly a decade after his widely loved feature debut “Masaan” premiered there. Just as Kapadia’s film showcased friendship and solidarity between two migrant nurses in Mumbai, Ghaywan’s “Homebound” charts the vicissitudes in the friendship between two young men from North India aspiring to become police constables.

Subhash K Jha revisits Sudhir Mishra’s Daas Dev, which released in 2018. Plus, we hear from the director on the making of the film and that incredible cast that included Rahut Bhat, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao, Vineet Mishra, and Sourabh Shukla.
The violence in the political dynamics of Sudhir Mishra’s latest work is so organized, it feels like an integral part of the life that the director brings to us in this uneasy restless yet intriguing and mystifying take on Saratchandra’s Devdas.
In an early scene Dev (played with implosive integrity by Rahul Bhat) handcuffs himself to a window and asks Chandni to not let him loose, no matter how much he requests her to. It’s a trick all addicts of drugs and alcohol play on their loved ones.
At this juncture, Dev wants to kick the bottle. Later, he just gives up. There are bigger battles...

Subhash K Jha examines the one where Kangana did a version of Uma Thurman’s Kill Bill in Sai Kabir‘s Revolver Rani (2014).
In a scene straight out of a street play, Kangana Ranaut, playing what seems like a cross between Uma Thurman in Kill Bill and Seema Biswas in Bandit Queen, Kangana in Revolver Rani which clocks 11 years on April 25, tells the mother of a young girl, “Teach her how to shoot a gun. It’s the only way she can survive.”
Revolver Rani (Rr) is an enormously disturbing and yet deeply satisfying tribute to many things at the same time. Director Sai Kabir (who had previously directed an unreleased film) pays a hefty homage to many filmmakers, among them Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bharadwaj, Quentin Tarantino, Mehboob Khan, and Shekhar Kapoor. And yet, for all its derivative aspirations, Rr is a fiercely original piece of cinema, crafted with compelling concentration and impassioned intuition.

Anurag Kashyap’s Gulaal was released 16 years ago, and Subhash K Jha revisits the brutal drama where Shakespeare meets Quentin Tarantino.
Gulaal emblazons itself across the screen as a deft and brutal film on the culture of decadence in a typical north Indian setting. And it spares no room for niceties as it is a powerful portrait of a culture that thrives on bullying tactics. The homage to the cinema of Vishal Bhardwaj is rampant in Gulaal.
Somewhere in the brilliantly cohesive soundtrack, we even hear strains of Lata Mangeshkar’s ‘Pani pani re’ from Bhardwaj’s Maachis in the film where life is lived by the gun and the mantra for survival is deception.
The world of Gulaal is crowded, claustrophobic and potent. The writer-director spares us none of the details in bringing to life a world where unlicensed guns and unchecked lawlessness rule. This is the kingdom of anarchy.

Fourteen years ago, Saqib Saleem and Saba Azad debuted with Y-Films’ Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge. I’m sure neither the actors nor the fans of that film, including yours truly, ever imagined seeing these two actors together in something like Zee 5’s Crime Beat, all these years later. I don’t have to tell you that the latest show is drastically different from Saleem and Azad’s debut film in every aspect. It is still a nice, perhaps unplanned, reunion. But if I have to point out the things that actively hurt Crime Beat, then the romance between Saleem and Azad’s characters should be at the top of the list. There is a professional rivalry angle at play as well, which works out.
Crime Beat, of course, is an eight-episode adaptation of author Somnath Batabyal’s 2013 novel, The Price You Pay. I got curious about the source material after getting this assignment,...

Back in 1980, Paul Schrader made American Gigolo, starring the one and only Richard Gere, where he played a male escort named Julian Kay. It was a high-paying job, and that allowed him to live a high-end life. But when things took a turn for the worse, Julian realized that he was as disposable as a piece of paper because nobody wanted to vouch for him. Through the film, Schrader commented on what women want in a man, objectification of men, and the volatile nature of materialism. Several years later, in 2024, we got Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper, where the titular married man used his expertise in pelvic sorcery to attain the kind of lifestyle that he won’t be able to afford on his government salary. Due to one of his client’s associations with the world of crime, Tribhuvan had to traverse through the dark underbelly of Noida. Now, A True Gentleman...

Panchayat season 4 is the next chapter in the Indian comedy-drama series and there has been some hopeful news this summer. One of the best original Hindi dramas on Prime Video, Panchayat follows the life of Abhishek Tripathi (Jitendra Kumar), an engineering graduate who can only find work as a secretary at a "Panchayat" (a small town government) in Phulera, a remote village in Uttar Pradesh. Similar to shows like Parks and Recreation, a lot of the comedy comes from the oddities and idiosyncrasies of small-town life.
The series first premiered in 2020, created by the Indian platform The Viral Fever, for Amazon Prime Video. Featuring a fantastic ensemble of actors, a whip-smart script, and a unique take on life in India, Panchayat has been a hit with critics and fans. Season three premiered in May 2024 with the usual eight episodes all released simultaneously. While the ending certainly left room open for...

America’s Got Talent fans demand an age limit after Pranysqa Mishra’s struggle in her recent performance. Mishra’s voice is blowing both the audience and the judges away. Like the first season, the second season of Tanaav is a beast of its own. Authentic in look and speech, Tanaav doesn’t look like an adaptation, of the Israeli series Fauda. The terror contexts are smartly changed and localized. The characters do not waste time in allowing us to get to know them. Their jobs are well-planned from before. Heads will role, tides will turn and the fugitive terrorists will find their nemesis.
I like the way the series makes room for the families to have their say. There is a chilling clarity in the narrative in the way it identifies the two sides and then leaves them to their devices. Tanaav2 gets it terror-dynamics right from the start. It’s not just the families of the Indian officers and the terrorists who suffer, even friends and acquaintances are not spared.

The final round of quarterfinals took place on Wednesday night’s (September 4) America’s Got Talent as the remaining ten acts awaited the results of the viewers’ votes to see if they’d advanced to the semi-finals. One act that could take it easy was aerial duo Sebastián and Sonia, who received Simon Cowell‘s Golden Buzzer on Tuesday (September 3), automatically sending them to the final. That left ten other acts at the mercy of the fan vote, including 10-year-old singer Pranysqa Mishra, who impressed the judges back at the auditions singing Tina Turner’s “River Deep, Mountain High.” Heidi Klum was so taken by the performance that she hit her Golden Buzzer and sent Mishra through to the live shows. In addition to Mishra, the other acts hoping to earn a spot in the semi-finals were dance group Brent Street, comedian Erica Rhodes, balancing duo Illya & Anastasia Strakhov, comedic magician Jonathan Burns,...

Acrobatic duo Sebastián and Sonia were among the 11 acts; however, due to Sonia’s injury, Sebastián was given the chance to perform solo. His performance impressed the judges, with Simon Cowell hitting his Golden Buzzer and sending the duo through to the semi-finals. Elsewhere, Mishra wowed audiences with a stunning performance of Miley Cyrus’ hit “Wrecking Ball.” After previously earning Heidi Klum’s Golden Buzzer in the audition stages, Mishra returned to the stage with poise...

Teeka Ram Jain is the primary antagonist of Netflix’s Tribhuvan Mishra: CA Topper. He is known as Raja Bhai or the Bhujiya King of Noida because the sweet shop that he owns is famous for its “bhujiya.” But his confectionery business is a front for his contract-killing business. He has three lackeys: Dhaincha, Jhatka, and Lappu. He is married to Bindi. And all of them are introduced to us when they nab a couple partaking in an extramarital affair and deliver them to their respective spouses. In that moment, Teeka Ram Jain waxes poetic about the sanctity of marriage and how wrong it is to cheat on one’s “better half.” A few minutes later, we see him scoffing at Bindi’s hobbies while making it seem like it’s beneath him to cater to his wife’s desires. Ironically enough, Bindi attains her satisfaction from the titular male prostitute,...

Adult comedies are a tricky matter. The director and the writers must ensure the movie or television show does not become crass or risqué to the point being unbearable. They have to avoid making it cringeworthy too. Only a few films in this genre have succeeded: Hunterrr, starring Gulshan Devaiah, and Vicky Donor, starring Ayushman Khurana. These two films pushed the boundaries of adult comedies by discussing a subject that was hardly touched upon in the past. The Kya Kool Hai Hum and the Masti series of films are examples of how an adult comedy is not to be served to the audience. Tribhuvan Mishra: CA Topper, the Netflix India original, is about a middle-aged man who ends up in a dire financial situation and has to look for alternative ways to make extra income for his family. This nine-part series was created by Puneet Mishra and released on...

“Gullak” Season 4, much anticipated by fans of the charming Mishra family, unfortunately fails to live up to its predecessors. While the previous seasons of this heartwarming series set high standards with their relatable storytelling and memorable performances, the latest installment falls short in multiple areas, resulting in a rather average viewing experience.
One of the major issues with Season 4 is its pacing. The narrative feels excessively stretched, with episodes dragging on without significant development or engagement. This results in a loss of the tight, crisp storytelling that made earlier seasons so compelling. The charm and wit that defined the series seem diluted, making it difficult for viewers to stay invested.
The performances in this season are another letdown. While the cast, including Jameel Khan, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Vaibhav Raj Gupta, and Harsh Mayar, has delivered strong performances in the past, their portrayal in Season 4 lacks the same spark and authenticity. The characters,...

Gullak Season 4 Is Streaming Live On Sony Liv ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Sony Liv is back with yet another entertaining and endearing episode of Gullak season 4. Starring Jameel Khan, Vaibhav Raj Gupta, Geetanjali Kulkarni, and Harsh Mayar, this season brought an underwhelming tone along with the five new episodes. However, it is the ending that left everyone surprised and perplexed.
Do not worry; we will not give you any spoilers for the show. But yes, we would still like to discuss the ending and explain what it could possibly mean. Interestingly, it was only the final episode that brought the original elements of the show back.
The final episode finally drops a transition of the show, moving from nostalgia to present age and striking a debate between adulting and parenting. However, as the debate intensifies with the younger son of the family doing the unthinkable, we see the parents questioning their mindset.

Family dramas used to be the bread and butter of the Hindi television landscape. Maybe it still is, but after a major chunk of the audience gravitated towards streaming platforms and said streaming platforms started making crime dramas, crime thrillers, and something or the other related to crime, it seemed like the era of the Great Indian Family Drama was over. But then, one fine day, I discovered Gullak, which had the complexities of the family dramas of yore, like Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, while also being as funny as something like Sarabhai Vs. Sarabhai. Instead of stretching each episode to 45–50 minutes, it limited itself to around 30 minutes per episode and used that time very efficiently to tell self-contained stories while having an overarching narrative. The first two seasons were slam dunks. The third season went too hard on the episodic storytelling while still managing to impact the viewers’ tear ducts.

Gullak Season 4 continues the series’ storytelling style by having an overarching narrative that’s spread across 5 short episodes, with each episode being centered around a self-contained incident that affects the characters in pivotal ways. The first episode of the show deals with the newly established tradition of bulldozing “illegal” homes and how that’s leading to an increase in bribery. The second episode is about chain-snatching and how women are expected to versus how they should react to such situations. The third episode is about throwing away old stuff from one’s house, and how it’s impossible to do so because of the memories attached to them. And the fourth episode is about teen love. Now, since the Mishra household is quite conservative in nature, they react to Aman’s “extracurricular” activities and blatant lies pretty aggressively and dramatically. When they see that their parental actions have dire consequences,...

“Manthan” is a landmark for Hindi cinema for a number of reasons. For starters, it was the first film in the world to be produced not by a single production house, but the farmers of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Federation who contributed Rs.2 each for the production of the movie. Furthermore, it is based on a story written jointly by Dr. Verghese Kurien and director Shyam Benegal. The story actually takes place during the White Revolution (also known as Operation Flood), whose impact extended to uplifting the living standards of rural communities, to empowering women farmers and ensuring self-sufficiency in dairy production, marking a significant milestone in India's agricultural history. As such, the script actually focuses on a case that highlights the issues the people who started the program faced, particularly in rural communities.
