Writer Jesse Andrews and director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon overturn the formula for the modern teen comedy: they lay on the quirky storytelling and goofy movie parodies, but also give us characters that are reasonably human and complex. We're soon invested in a warm and rewarding drama. Young actors Thomas Mann, Rj Cyler and Olivia Cooke deal with real problems, and the movie doesn't try to change the subject to sex in every scene. A charming show, very worthwhile. Around this time last year, I basically fell head over heels in love with The Fault in Our Stars, the rare Young Adult (or Ya) adaptation that really worked in my eyes. Well, fancy my surprise when I saw Me and Earl and the Dying Girl last week, a film that’s just as good, if not better. Another Ya tale about the tragedy of teenager cancer, this one is a total horse of a different color. I really found myself moved by it, of course, but also laughing out loud quite a bit. This is as funny a flick as it is an emotional one. As such, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is as great as anything else that I’ve seen so far in 2015. I’m not sure it’ll wind up on Oscar’s radar, but it really should be. The film is an adaptation...

Sutter Keely (Miles Teller) is the charming, good time guy who lives in the moment. Self-assured, he’s the life of the party, popular, and he and his girlfriend Cassidy (Brie Larson) breeze through their high school experience. Sutter and Cassidy are like a teenage power couple that rule parties thanks to their appeal and all the social lubricants at hand. But, writing an admission letter to the Dean of a university, Sutter reveals his life is at a crossroads. Thinking she's caught him with another girl, Cassidy has dumped him, when the truth is that Sutter was using his good-time skills to help get his timid friend Ricky (Masam Holden) laid. But Cassidy isn’t having it and Sutter can’t see why this is the straw that broke the camel’s back with her. So, Sutter is moving on, and getting ready to enter a new phase of his life: singledom.

Last year James Ponsoldt's Smashed didn't really make much of a dent in the landscape, forgotten by most or perhaps never seen. It featured a solid performance from Mary Elizabeth Winstead and despite my aversion to films about alcoholism, it was quite good. Ponsoldt's new film, The Spectacular Now travels in similar territory and recently won a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival for its two leads -- Shailene Woodley (The Descendents) and Miles Teller (Rabbit Hole) -- and today the first trailer for the film has arrived. The film is an adaptation of Tim Tharp's novel centered on Sutter Keely (Teller), a high school senior and a budding alcoholic. One night he gets drunk and wakes up on a lawn with Aimee Finicky (Woodley) hovering over him. The film follows their relationship from that point forward. Along with Teller and Woodley, the film stars Brie Larson,...

The final chapter of Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn is here bringing the incredibly cool web-series to an end! I loved watching this series, and I hope that someday we get that live-action feature film version of this epic videogame franchise that we've all been waiting for.
Forward Unto Dawn is set before the events of the first Halo game, but the plot will ultimately tie into Halo 4, which is being released on November 6th.
After a terrifying night of combat and loss, Lasky makes a life-or-death decision to help the Master Chief... but will it be enough to save them all from the Covenant?
To watch the first episode click here, for the second episode click here, and for the third and fourth episodes click here! What did you think of the web-series?! Thanks to Microsoft and 343 Industries and Machinima Prime for bringing this to us!

There's only one more episode left in the five series run, all made to lead up to the worldwide launch of Halo 4 on November 6th. This has been an awesome web-series, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it all turns out!

Microsoft and 343 Industries have released the second episode in the Halo web-series on Machinima Prime, Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn.
Cadet Michael "Sully" Sullivan continues to decode the hidden Oni combat video as Lasky's struggle with his place in the Unsc ignites with fellow cadet Walter Vickers. After a classroom confrontation with Captain Mehaffey and a challenge from Chyler, Lasky pulls Hastati Squad back from the brink...at a terrible physical cost to himself.
The story will unfold weekly through a series of five episodes, and will lead up to the worldwide launch of Halo 4 on November 6th. So far this web-series has been quite impressive, and I can't wait for the next episode! Master Chief is also expected to make an appearance in the series at some point.

Microsoft and 343 Industries have officially launched their awesome new live-action digital web-series Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn. This is only the first of five episodes of the series, and it mostly sets up the characters in the story and gives us the base for which the rest of the story will follow. It also starts off with a little bit of action.
Here's the description the came along with the first episode:
Hastati Squad, the newest batch of freshman cadets at the Unsc's Corbulo Academy of Military Science, pays the price for cadet Thomas Lasky's tactics.
Thomas Lasky came to Corbulo Academy of Military Science with his mother and brother's impressive military careers hanging over his head. Haunted by ghosts from his past, he has serious doubts about the war he's expected to fight. As fellow cadet Chyler Silva tries to help him find his place at the academy, tensions...

Update: Jennifer Jason Leigh, one of Hollywoods most respected actresses, is joining The Spectacular Now. She'll play the mother of Miles Teller's popular high schooler.

Aug. 2, 2012 - Shailene Woodley ("The Secret Life of the American Teenager"), Miles Teller (the scene stealer in Footloose), and Brie Larson and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (both from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) are some of the stars cast in The Spectacular Now, which seems to be next non-rom-com rom-com. From Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, the screenwriters who upended the rom-com with (500) Days of Summer, the story follows outgoing, adventurous high school senior Sutter (Teller) who decides he will save introvert Aimee (Woodley) from living a life as a social outcast. The script, adapted from Tim Tharp's novel of the same name, was voted for inclusion on the 2009 Black List of the best unproduced screenplays because -- according to Variety...

They'll star with the previously-announced Kaitlyn Dever, Masam Holden, Brie Larson, Dayo Okeniyi, Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley. The official description of the original novel is as follows: Sutter Keely. He's the guy you want at your party. He'll get everyone dancing. He'll get everyone in your parents' pool. Halo and action-sci-fi-adventure genre fans rejoice! The cast of the much-hyped (and possibly paradigm shifting) live action web series, Halo: Forward Unto Dawn has been announced. And the individuals set to play characters in the five 15-minute installments of the famed video game's online video have some high quality pedigrees. From Smallville to Mission Impossible, these actors appeared constantly on traditional entertainment mediums. The lead roles belong to Tom Green (who will play Thomas Lasky) and Daniel Cudmore (who will embody Master Chief). Although Green isn't yet a household name (at least not in the Us), Cudmore is well known for his roles in X-Men and three of the Twilight installments. Aside from the leads, you'll probably recognize Anna Popplewell (as Chyler Silva), who played Susan Pevensie in the Chronicles of Narnia, Ayelet Zurer (who will play Mehaffey) for her roles in Angels and Demons, Vantage Point and the upcoming...
