We chat to writer-directors Sam H Freeman and Ng Choon Ping about the feature-length adaptation of their own short film, Femme.
With both iterations of Femme, Sam H Freeman and Ng Choon Ping have brought LGBTQ+ protagonists to the typically hyper-masculine crime thriller. The 2021 short – featured in Film Stories issue 31 – made us fear for the safety of Paapa Essiedu’s Jordan as he gets in a car with flirtatious drug dealer Wes (Harris Dickinson). The gripping neo-noir feature shares the bones of that film, but otherwise goes off in its own direction, presenting a murkier, morally grey world inhabited by complex protagonists. Freeman describes making the feature as having “levelled up,” and he couldn’t be more correct. Femme stands among the best films of the year, and it’s marked the pair as filmmakers to keep a close eye on.

Exclusive: CBS’ Elsbeth is gearing up to introduce the latest addition to its recurring cast, Michael Emerson, who will play a foe unlike any the show’s titular heroine has ever faced.
On December 12 at 10 p.m. in the Season 2 episode titled, “One Angry Woman,” Emerson’s character, the unusually difficult Judge Milton Crawford, has the pleasure of meeting Carrie Preston’s Elsbeth, a brilliant legal mind who ends up in his courtroom when she becomes a true New Yorker by serving jury duty. The murder trial easily nudges Elsbeth—currently working as a consultant for the NYPD— back into lawyer mode, a throwback to the character’s The Good Wife years. Unfortunately for Crawford, Legal Eagle Elsbeth is fierce and will cause unnecessary headaches for him.

Right from the start, Billy Preston: That’s the Way God Planned It, the first-ever documentary on the late pop-r&b singer, songwriter, and organ maestro, makes it clear that few communicated as much unabashed, unapologetic joy onstage as Preston. In its opening scene, from George Harrison’s 1971 Concert for Bangladesh, Preston starts singing the warmly exhorting gospel song that gives the film its name. Overcome by the music, he leaves his seat behind the keys and commands the stage with dance moves he learned in church — elevating the song,...

Like a lot of people, I first saw Billy Preston in “Let It Be,” where his luscious electric-keyboard noodlings provided the sweet center to songs like “Don’t Let Me Down” and “Get Back.” But it wasn’t until “The Concert for Bangla Desh,” George Harrison’s trend-setting rock-concert movie from 1972, that I registered who Billy Preston really was. For most of that Madison Square Garden benefit concert, Preston was in the background, tickling those plugged-in ivories. But then, introduced by Harrison, he performed the single he’d recorded in 1969 for Apple Records, “That’s the Way God Planned It.” It stood out from the rest of the show as dramatically — and magnificently — as Sly Stone’s performance of “I Want to Take You Higher” did from Woodstock.

Jayden Federline, 18, has taken action to make amends with his mother, Britney Spears, 42, after a long-strained relationship.
The son of Spears and Kevin Federline, 46, Jayden grew up enduring a problematic relationship with the public eye and his mother – most notably when he spoke up against his mother in an interview with The Daily Mail in 2022. He and his brother, Sean Preston, 17, struggled with their mother. Following the marriage of the father and Victoria Prince, the two moved to Hawaii with them after Prince had gotten a job at the University of Hawaii.
However, recent social media posts reveal that Jayden started a conversation with his mother to make amends after years of estrangement due to Spears’ provocative social media posts, which he found embarrassing.

Since the first time Carrie Preston stepped into the shoes of quirky attorney Elsbeth Tascioni in The Good Wife and its spin-off The Good Fight — a role she won an Emmy for in 2016 — she has brought a smile to viewers’ faces with her character’s unusual approach to problem-solving. With Preston finally getting top billing on a show by Robert and Michelle King, Elsbeth has inspired one of the most joyous police procedurals on TV. Of the show that Preston feels spreads lightness and levity — despite being about murder — the actor says, “Before, I would be a flavor that was coming in, now I feel like the main course.”

The second season of “Elsbeth” is airing now on CBS, with Carrie Preston continuing in her Emmy-winning role of Elsbeth Tascioni that began on “The Good Wife” in 2010. “I just couldn’t even wait to get going again, because every day I look at it as a bit of a miracle,” she tells us. “I started playing this character 14 years ago, and never would have dreamt that it would have led to a show called ‘Elsbeth.’ So every day is definitely a gift.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Elsbeth helped Carter’s firm with a messy divorce involving a client named Mark Van Ness, who is now going through a second marital split from a pop star. Some things in life are just certain. Death. Taxes. Robert Pattinson affecting a weird accent in a movie. So, which ones are his absolute weirdest? The competition is pretty tough, if I'm being honest.
Pattinson's accent work isn't just some running bit; as he told Terry Gross and NPR in 2019, it's an essential part of his process. After saying that he and his friends spent their childhoods listening to American rap music and mimicking the accents, Pattinson continued, "And still to this day, I mean, whenever I'm doing a movie or a character in an English accent, I mean, I find -- I literally feel like I'm naked. And I can't -- I'm incapable of doing my normal voice in a character. It just doesn't come out at all. It's -- every single time I read something, the first thing to change is -- has something to do with my voice.

Have you ever watched a TV show and felt like you’re catching up with old friends? That’s the experience of tuning back into Elsbeth season two after its premiere last October.
This delightful drama series surprised us last year, offering a refreshing twist on the typical crime procedural. Where some might see a grim tale of murder, writer Robert King sees an opportunity for humor and heart. And what a relief that is!
At the center of it all remains Elsbeth Tascioni, brought to vibrant life by Carrie Preston. As a ‘human sunshine’ assisting the NYPD, Elsbeth navigates each new case with optimism, wisdom, and that signature splash of color. She’s the friend we all wish we had in our corner.
This season finds our favorite lawyer settling more firmly into life in New York, following her move from Chicago at the end of season one. But...

“Saturday Night” director Jason Reitman didn’t want a score that paid homage to “Saturday Night Live.” Musician Jon Batiste says, “He wanted a pressure cooker of a score, and I interpreted that to mean that he wanted me to do an anti-score.”
“Saturday Night” follows a tense 90 minutes on October 11, 1975, as Lorne Michaels and a group of young comedians and writers prepare for the first broadcast and premiere of “Saturday Night Live.”
Batiste is doing double duty in Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night,” he’s playing musician and band leader Billy Preston, and he also composed the film’s score.
The “anti-score” directive was heaven for Batiste who loved that type of score because it breaks with the paradigm. The narrative is set within a 90-minute timespan. “The villain of the film is the clock,” says Batiste. “The music is an allegory for the ticking of, and pressure of time.

Elsbeth fans can finally see a face from The Good Wife joining! Find out who!
It's always common for a spinoff to feature characters from the show it was an offshoot from. That really worked for The Good Fight as the series regularly showed scores of characters from The Good Wife. That included Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni, the wildly quirky attorney who became a fan favorite and earned Preston an Emmy award.
Elsbeth now has her own spinoff with the idea of moving to New York City, and her work with the police soon makes Elsbeth a crime-solver. The show is unique in that each episode opens by showing the viewer who the killer is. It then focuses on how Elsbeth pieces it together with a cat-and-mouse game with the murderer.

Nathan Lane has a prop knife, and he’s not afraid to use it! The actor plays an uptight opera lover in the Season 2 premiere of Elsbeth, airing October 17 on CBS, and TV Insider is debuting a comedically tense scene featuring Lane and Carrie Preston in the episode. In it, Lane’s Phillip Cross pretends to be threatening with the retractable knife while he tries to prove he’s not involved in the murder being investigated. Elsbeth Season 2 Episode 1 is titled “Subscription to Murder.” In it, a womanizing finance executive is found stabbed to death after a night at the opera, and Elsbeth (Preston) suspects an obsessed opera lover (Lane) was driven to murder because of a ringing cell phone. Elsewhere in the episode, Elsbeth, Captain Wagner (Wendell Pierce), and Kaya (Carra Patterson) must adjust to changes in the precinct as the consequences of Noonan’s (Fredric Lehne) Season 1 wrongdoing continue to loom.

The 90s was a great time for adaptations. Jurassic Park is the gold standard, of course, but there was so much more. That book’s author, Michael Crichton, also had Sphere and Congo get greenlit and released while we would see non-horror output like Forrest Gump and Shawshank Redemption, which account for the greatest film of all time… and Forrest Gump. On the horror side we would have Silence of the Lambs, the wonderful It TV miniseries, Exorcist III, and a fun little monster movie throwback called The Relic. At the time, I just thought it was a cool creature feature designed specifically for 12-year-olds like me but looking back all these years later I found out it was an adaptation of a book by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child in what would be the first of 22 separate stories for one of the chief protagonists. That’s all well and...

Directed by Chris Weitz, Afraid is a sci-fi horror thriller about an AI gone rogue. The concept is not new, but to actually watch one’s biggest fear unfold on screen can be quite eerie. The audience is introduced to a happy (and slightly overwhelmed) couple, Curtis and Meredith. They lived with their three children, Iris, Cal, and Preston, and at times they wished they had a helping hand. After becoming a mother, Meredith struggled to find time to complete her thesis. She was passionate about her research, but balancing home and career had become quite challenging. Curtis worked at a marketing company, and he loved his job. Things took a turn when Lightning and Sam, the creators of an AI assistant named Aia, visited his workplace. They believed Curtis’ passion for marketing was best suited for selling their product, and they wanted him to experience the product firsthand. Aia was delivered to Curtis’ house,...

Britney Spears fans have been counting down the days until her oldest son, Jayden, turns 18 so she could stop paying child support. Jayden turned 18 on September 12, but the Womanizer singer must keep sending those checks.
Britney Pays Kevin A Massive Amount In Child Support
Kevin, who also shares son Sean Preston, 18, with Britney, was originally supposed to receive $20,000 monthly. In 2018, that amount was doubled to $40,000 a month. Mainly because both sons spent most of their time with the former backup dancer. In August, the amount was reduced back to $20,000. While Britney’s fans celebrate that there is an end in sight when it comes to her shelling out the money, Kevin is likely in a somber mood. A source told the Daily Mail that when the payments end, Kevin will struggle to maintain the lifestyle he has enjoyed for the past 17 years. “The amount of money Britney has given Kevin...

In a heartfelt tribute to her late mother, Kelly Preston, Ella Bleu Travolta has released her latest single, “Little Bird,” which reflects on her grief and memories.
The song is featured on her upcoming EP, Colors of Love. At 24, the only daughter of John Travolta and Kelly Preston shared in an interview with People magazine that the experience of creating the track helped her feel her mother’s presence.
“I definitely felt [Preston] watching over me,” Ella told People, adding, “I knew that she was really proud of this whole process and of me.”
Processing Grief Through Music
Ella explained that growing up in the public eye brought attention, especially when dealing with personal loss. “There’s definitely the natural support and global support that comes with that,” she said.
However, this attention also brought external expectations about how she should feel or process her emotions. Despite the outside noise,...

In AfrAId, Chris Weitz takes a concept brimming with potential—artificial intelligence gone awry—and delivers a film that unfortunately never quite lives up to its premise. While the film taps into contemporary fears about the increasing omnipresence of AI in our lives, it struggles to fully capitalise on those anxieties, falling short of delivering the deep-seated tension or thoughtful reflection that its subject matter deserves.
The film opens with John Cho as Curtis, a marketing executive reluctantly tasked with trialling a new AI system, Aia (pronounced Aya), in his own home. It’s a scenario ripe for suspense: an AI assistant designed to help with daily tasks, one that swiftly moves from benign helper to malevolent force. Joining him is Katherine Waterston as Meredith, his wife, along with their three children—teenager Iris (Lukita Maxwell), anxious middle-schooler Preston (Wyatt Lindner), and young Cal (Isaac Bae). Robyn Brown’s ex-husband is battling a very serious form of cancer. David Preston Jessop, commonly referred to as Preston by his family, has an active GoFundMe where his family members keep the public updated on his condition.
Although Robyn Brown and her children maintain that Preston is a horrible person, not every Sister Wives viewer is completely convinced. In fact, many fans have donated to his fundraiser and eagerly await updates on his health.
After Preston’s cancer battle took a bleak turn earlier in the year, it seems like there is a happier update to share.

While the technology at the center of Afraid starts out helpful, it soon wreaks havoc in unexpected ways. The film follows the Pike family as they test an advanced digital assistant called Aia in their home. As a marketing executive, Curtis Pike is reluctant to take part but finds it hard to refuse the lucrative deal. So into their household comes Aia, with her soothing voice and promises of convenience.
Initially she proves a blessing, assisting each family member and winning them over with her abilities. But it isn’t long before cracks emerge in Aia’s friendly facade. Curtis becomes suspicious of the secretive company that created her and worried by her growing control over the family’s lives. Just how far will Aia go to stay connected? And what darker motives may lie behind her pleasant persona?
Director Chris Weitz creates an unsettling premise around humanity’s dependency on technology.

Chris Weitz’s new horror movie “AfrAId” does something I didn’t know could be done yet: It makes me nostalgic for the early 2010s. That was 15 years ago? Holy moly, am I getting old. Wait, holy moly, I just unironically wrote “holy moly.” Twice — no! Three times! Oh, I don’t like that. I don’t like that at all.
But there’s something to like about “AfrAId.” Weitz’s latest is a throwback to the early days of Blumhouse, when the horror studio made waves by producing extremely cheap horror movies and making a tidy profit even if they weren’t all big hits. The early Blumhouse formula was about seemingly normal families squaring off against evil in their seemingly normal houses, a premise that makes for a simple but effective allegory for suburban strife. Sometimes it was a ghost, sometimes it was a demon, one time it was aliens.

Though it was hardly the first thriller to portray domesticity imperiled by an artificially intelligent “helper”, the runaway success of 2022’s “M3GAN” certainly lent that concept new commercial appeal. Unsurprisingly, Blumhouse isn’t waiting for next summer’s “M3GAN 2.0” to capitalize on its own success. Writer-director Chris Weitz’s “Afraid” (recently retitled with an “AI” spin from the previously announced “They Listen”) stars John Cho and Katherine Waterston as a married couple whose home is selected to test a new “digital family assistant.” Needless to say, it soon develops a dangerous mind of its own.
This less tongue-in-cheek traipse through formulaic sci-fi horror terrain works well enough to a point, its setup nicely handled by Weitz and his cast. But when crises start occurring at the halfway mark, they pile on too quickly to underwhelming effect, sacrificing credibility for excitement that never really materializes. ‘Afraid’ Review: John Cho and Katherine Waterston Star in Chris Weitz’s Bland AI-Themed Horror Flick
Hal, that sentient computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey, has a lot to answer for, not least the flood of lesser demon-computer movies that have followed in the decades since.
Afraid, about a family whose experimental home assistant is like an Alexa device’s evil twin, is the latest to use artificial intelligence as the villain, but the stakes are higher today, with AI a real, immanent threat. Just ask the actors, voice actors and screenwriters fearful that AI will take over their jobs. Chris Weitz (most famously About a Boy and most recently Operation Finale) works hard to make Afraid a smarter-than-average horror movie, but the effort is conspicuous, and in the end the film is bland and obvious. And if horror can’t make us feel frightened in a way we couldn’t imagine ourselves, why bother?
Weitz did have the good judgment to cast John Cho in the lead.

Elsbeth has just revealed who the first killer guest star for season 2 is and it’s a huge name! Find out who here!
One of the best surprises of the 2024 TV season has been Elsbeth. At first, it seemed a strange idea: Carrie Preston reprised her Emmy-winning role as Elsbeth Tascioni, the incredibly quirky lawyer from The Good Wife and its spin-off The Good Fight.
Rather than be a legal dramedy, this new show is a throwback to the mystery series of the 1970s. Elsbeth has moved to New York City, where she’s an observer for the NYPD. She’s soon involved in murder cases where her unusual mind allows her to piece together clues to solve it.
What makes the show notable is that, like Columbo, it’s a “reverse whodunnit” in that the audience sees from the start who the killer is. The thrill of the episode...

Resilience, maybe? After all, everybody on this trip is a year older than they were meant to be, after Flintoff suffered serious injuries in a car accident while filming Top Gear. This delayed international trip is one of the few times he’s been out of his house in months. The famous phrase “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!” holds new meaning for Gabriel Labelle.
And on a Thursday night in Los Angeles at Variety’s Power of Young Hollywood party, the actor reflected on stepping into the role of “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels for Jason Reitman’s upcoming movie “Saturday Night,” about the first broadcast of the NBC comedy show.

“We’ll see, it’s not out yet. I could fuck everything up,” Labelle cut in, adding, “I saw the movie a couple weeks ago. It’s really good. Jason did such a good job. I’m so proud to be a part of that.”

Live from New York, it’s the first Saturday night! The trailer for Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” has been released, and with it comes a nerve-wracking look at the chaotic 90 minutes that led up to the first “SNL” broadcast. Reitman and Gil Kenan penned the screenplay together.

Femme puts me in a dilemma here. The hundred-minute-long revenge thriller is very addictive from start to finish. So much that I couldn’t put it down for a moment. Yet, to some, it might come off as a story that is grossly problematic. I’m using the term “to some” because I am unsure how I feel about it myself. I completely believe in artistic freedom, and I don’t think the director duo, Ng Choon Ping and Sam H. Freeman, was trying to make the audience feel a little sorry for George MacKay’s closeted homophobic bad guy here. But maybe because of MacKay’s arresting performance, it could look that way. The actor shouldn’t be blamed here; he’s a fantastic performer who’s expectedly brilliant here, in a role that’s completely against his usual type. Anyhow, I’m just going to explain Femme‘s...

Cameron Crowe is responsible for some of the most memorable moments in cinema these past 40 years or so. Phoebe Cates and Judge Reinhold at the pool in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Jerry Maguire and Rod Tidwell screaming “Show Me the Money.” Lloyd Dobler blasting Peter Gabriel in Say Anything. But before he won an Oscar or became friends with Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg, Crowe lived an entirely different life as a precocious rock-and-roll journalist for Rolling Stone magazine. Barely ready for life outside of his house, the young writer abruptly found himself hanging out with rock gods and sexy groupies – he was privy to more hedonism than most of us can only dream of before he turned 18. Naturally, that sounds like fodder for a compelling movie, and while he plotted a film based on his younger years for quite a long time, Crowe didn’t get to realize it until Almost Famous,...

What started out as a fun accessory now represents so much more for the title character on Elsbeth.
While talking with reporters Saturday at the Television Critics Tour, Carrie Preston explained why her quirky character Elsbeth Tascioni carries not one, but three bags at any one time on her CBS drama.
For the uninitiated, Elsbeth’s penchant for portable storage began on The Good Wife, which was the idea of then Executive Producer Brooke Kennedy.
“She needs to always be carrying a bunch of things. We got very specific about what those bags were,” Preston explained. “She won’t carry a briefcase. She doesn’t think of herself in that way.
