Mubi has acquired all Italian rights to Giulio Bertelli’s directorial debut “Agon,” starring Italian judo athlete and Olympic Gold medalist Alice Bellandi, ahead of the film’s premiere in the Critics’ Week section of the upcoming Venice Film Festival.

Concurrently, Mubi-owned sales company The Match Factory has taken world sales on “Agon.”

The specialty streamer will release “Agon” in Italian cinemas on Aug. 29, kicking off Mubi’s Italian theatrical release slate.

“Agon” is an allegorical film that follows three athletes as they prepare and subsequently compete at the fictional Ludoj 2024 Games in judo, fencing and shooting. The sports-themed drama marks the directorial debut of Bertelli, who is fashion designer Miuccia Prada’s son.

Bertelli’s debut also features “La Chimera” stars Yile Vianello and Sofija Zobina. The drama is “informed by the historical figures of Joan of Arc, Cleopatra and Russian cavalry officer Nadezhda Durova,” according to the provided synopsis.

She’ll play Chloe Jacobs, a woman in her late 30s living a dangerous double life. By night, she seduces and slays vampires as part of a secret government operation. John Maclean‘s survival thriller Tornado featuring Tim Roth, Slow Horses’ Jack Lowden and Japanese star Kōki will close this year’s Sands Film Festival.

Set in the rugged landscape of 1790’s Britain, the film follows Tornado who finds herself caught in a perilous situation when she and her father’s travelling puppet show crosses paths with a ruthless criminal gang led by Sugarman (Roth) and his ambitious son Little Sugar (Lowden).

Back in August of 2021, Skyline franchise writer Liam O’Donnell announced that he had just finished writing the script for the fourth entry in the alien invasion Skyline series. At that time, he said he had “no idea how likely this is to get made,” but the project – which was once being called Skyline Radial but has ended up with the title Skyline: Warpath – has since made its way into production. U.S. and U.K.-based global sales outfit Palisades Park Pictures has revealed a star-studded slate for Hong Kong’s film rights market FilMart.

John Travolta, Katherine Heigl and Christopher Walken lead romantic comedy “That’s Amore!,” which is in pre-production. Written and directed by “Green Book” writer Nick Vallelonga, the film follows two emotionally damaged people who attempt to date one another, and when their families get involved, comedy ensues.

The producers are Vallelonga (Vallelonga Prods.), Cassian Elwes (Elevated Films), Brenda Emmett and Vince Emmett (American Troubadours), David Polemeni; Tamara Birkemoe and Mark Damon, for Palisades Park Pictures, serve as executive producers.

The follow-up to 2015’s Slow West will stream exclusively on AMC streamer Shudder in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand, with a theatrical release through IFC Films.

Tornado stars Academy Award-winner Roth, Lowden, Takehiro Hira (Giri/Haji) and Japanese star Mitsuki Kimura, known as Kōki (Touch). The new spy thriller Chief of Station is set to hit stateside. The film, which stars Aaron Eckhart and Olga Kurylenko, comes from the production companies Bee Holder Productions and Concourse Media Film. The movie has now also secured a distributor as Vertical purchased the U.S. rights and has plans to release the project domestically in May 2024. Matthew Shreder, a producer on the film, says, “Chief of Station is an elevated spy thriller that delivers impressive action, suspense and Bond-esque vibes. Vertical is the perfect partner to bring this film to audiences nationwide and we look forward to seeing them launch it in a few months.”

Exclusive: Vertical has acquired U.S. rights to spy thriller Chief of Station starring Aaron Eckhart, Olga Kurylenko and Alex Pettyfer.

The Bee Holder Productions and Concourse Media film is being lined up for a May 2024 domestic release.

Eckhart plays Ben, a former CIA European Station Chief whose world comes crumbling down after his wife, a former operative, dies in a terrible accident. After receiving cryptic information that his wife’s death might not have been an accident, Ben heads back into the shadowy underworld of Eastern Europe, teaming up with a former adversary to unravel a conspiracy that challenges everything he thought he knew about his wife and the agency he worked at for more than 20 years.

Supporting cast includes Nick Moran, Chris Petrovski, Daniel Bernhardt, James Faulkner, Laetitia Eido, Isobel Wood and Nina Bergman.

The film was written by George Mahaffey (Heatseekers) and directed by Jesse V. Johnson. Producers are Steve Lee Jones for Bee Holder and Matthew Shreder for Concourse.

The American Film Market kicks off Oct. 31 and runs through Nov. 5 in its new headquarters at the Le Meridien Delfina in Santa Monica. Industry screenings are set at theaters throughout the city and AFM’s conference series, the AFM Sessions, will take place at the Hilton Santa Monica Hotel. Vertical has picked up domestic distribution rights for “Fast Charlie,” TheWrap has learned. The Pierce Brosnan-starring crime caper contains the final onscreen performance from the late James Caan. The picture will premiere on Oct. 7 at the Mill Valley Festival. Alongside Brosnan and Caan, who died in July of 2022 at the age of 82, “Fast Charlie” stars Morena Baccarin. Palisades Park Pictures will handle overseas sales.

Per the official logline, “Charlie Swift [Brosnan]is a fixer with a problem: the thug he’s whacked is missing his head and Charlie will only be paid if the body can be identified. Exclusive: James Caan’s final film, the action thriller Fast Charlie, has been snapped up for U.S. distribution by Vertical ahead of its October 7th world premiere at the Mill Valley Film Festival.

Caan died in Los Angeles in July 2022, aged 82, following a decorated career of six decades. Specifics as to release plans for his last project, based on the 2001 novel Gun Monkeys, haven’t been disclosed. Duchess follows Kirk’s no-nonsense Scarlett Monaghan and her rise from a working-class petty criminal to becoming a ruthless organized crime leader in the seedy underbelly of the diamond smuggling circuit of Tenerife.

When I started watching Skylines, I’ll admit the first thing that surprised me was that this is in fact the third movie. Thankfully with the recap given, this didn’t stop me from enjoying what was to come…

With the friendly alien hybrids now living on Earth, danger looms as a new virus starts to turn them against humans. Captain Rose Corley (Lindsey Morgan) finds herself coerced into leading an elite team of mercenaries on a mission to alien home world in order to try to save what is left of humanity.

The first thing I liked about Skylines is the fact there are plenty of familiar faces who are dependable at providing strong performances.

I had initially started this review with a brief history of the place in my heart that I have for the Skyline franchise but you know what? Let me just say that I am a total sci-fi nerd, I love alien invasion film and I especially love a flick that has the balls to have insane ambition and looks to create a wide reaching universe. Skyline has always been that franchise! A franchise that knows exactly what it is and where it wants to be; a franchise that for the budget they have, always pulls out the stops and impresses from start to finish; a franchise that lets be honest doesn’t get the credit it deserves.

Liam O’Donnell wrote and produced the critically-mauled sci-fi hit Skyline in 2010, and he’s spent the better part of a decade working on the well-received follow up film, Beyond Skyline, which also marks his directorial debut. We talked to him about his experiences on both movies, and whether there might be a resurgence of big budget original genre films.

If we did not have a reason to watch Beyond Skyline, the upcoming sequel to the hope-dashing 2010 film Skyline, the World might just let out a collective 'Damnit! Now I have to see this!' after reading the following cast additions. Variety is reporting that Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian, stars and fight choreographers from The Raid films, have joined the cast and will choreograph the fights for Liam O'Donnell's sci-fi film. Uwais will play the leader of an underground resistance group when aliens invade Earth. Greg Strause, one of the first film's directors is producing along with his brother Colin, Matthew Chausse and Mike Wiluan. "The Raid" star Iko Uwais will co-star with Frank Grillo in "Beyond Skyline," the upcoming follow-up to the 2010 alien invasion adventure "Skyline".

Join will play the leader of an underground resistance that forms after aliens touch down on earth. Grillo plays a father looking for his abducted child.

Uwais "Raid" franchise co-star Yayan Ruhian is also onboard the project, and the pair will act as fight choreographers on the film.

Liam O’Donnell is directing and has penned the script. Greg and Colin Strause, who helmed the first film, will produce alongside Matthew Chausse and Mike Wiluan.

Filming begins in Indonesia in early December.

The thriller is based on the true story of Yossi Ghinsberg, who penned a memoir about his dangerous trip to the Amazon jungle where he was accompanied by two friends and a mysterious guide. If the deal goes through, Bacon will play the Austrian guide, Karl. Greg McLean, whom Bacon worked with on 6 Miranda Drive, will direct. Justin Monjo adapted Ghinsberg's 2005 book for the screen. The film will begin shooting early next year in Australia and Colombia.
