Flipping a traditional formula on its head, Mari Walker’s haunting feature film debut See You Then begins simply enough: we’re introduced to a reunion that takes place in a sometimes awkward dream-like state in a college town on a weekday night when only a handful of professors and students have ventured out. Perhaps, the long conversation that transpires throughout the evening can be read as a truth and reconciliation that needed to occur so that both parties can simply get out of the rut they find themselves personally, professionally, and creatively––the kind of process one might engage in while dreaming of an ex or a road not taken while sleeping.
Visiting a college town for a conference Kris (Pooya Mohseni), a networking specialist, meets up with an old college acquaintance Naomi (Lynn Chen), a daring performance artist who is now a professor juggling course loads and the...

"The wayward heart is just a wild animal... beast that needs to be tamed." Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for the indie psychological thriller / drama of sorts called Elyse, the first feature made by Anthony Hopkins' Colombian wife named Stella Hopkins. She also co-wrote the screenplay. Memory and hallucination intertwine to expose a history of trauma, revealing Elyse is Catatonic and institutionalized in a State Hospital. Her recovery is reliant on the dissolution of her marriage, the restoration of the relationship with her mother, and the mutual absolution with the nanny's daughter, Carmen. It's the care from Dr. Lewis and the unconditional love from her nurse, David, that promise Elyse a new life. The film stars Anthony Hopkins, Lisa Pepper as Elyse, as well as Aaron Tucker, Tara Arroyave, Fran Tucker, Anthony Apel, Julieta Oritiz, and Danny Jacobs. I'm not sure why they need to blatantly reveal in the synopsis that she's catatonic,...

The 15th annual Black List survey was revealed Monday December 16, and it includes 66 un-produced screenplays from up-and-coming literary talent. Results were pooled from a survey of more than 250 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to 10 favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2019 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year. This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the Black List.
Since 2005, more than a third of the screenplays included in the annual Black List surveys have become produced films, and often to notoriety — such as “Argo,” “American Hustle,” “Juno,” “The King’s Speech,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Spotlight,” “The Revenants,” “The Descendants,” and “Hell or High Water.” Melina Matsoukas’s 2019 film “Queen & Slim,” written by Lena Waithe with a story co-authored by James Frey, was featured on the 2018 Black List.

Perfectly navigating an intricate balance between a group of diverse friends who are determined to support each other, no matter how distinct their opinions are, can be a challenging, yet equally rewarding and gratifying, process. The four main characters in the new independent comedy, ‘Growing Up & Other Lies,’ which opens today in select theaters and on VOD nationwide, enthrallingly pledge to help each other during their times of identity crisis. The movie’s writer-directors, Darren Grodsky and Danny Jacobs, who both starred in and produced the project, also remained powerfully loyal to each other on their second feature film collaboration, after they penned and helmed the 2008 comedy-drama, ‘Humboldt County.’ [ Read More ]

Jake (Josh Lawson) kicks off a walk down the length of Manhattan with a declaration of defeat: He's heading back to the Midwest after a decade scraping by as an artist. Rocks (Adam Brody), Billy (Danny Jacobs), and Gunderson (Wyatt Cenac) are hoping to talk him out of the move during this day-long, 260-block trek. The question that soon arises isn't why Jake would head home to help an ailing father, but why, exactly, these guys are friends. The seriocomic Growing Up and Other Lies, written and directed by Jacobs and Darren Grodsky (Humboldt County), offers strained male bonding from a quartet sorely out of tune. These former roommates and college buds rely on nostalgia for their once-strong connection, and it's not long past Inwood that strains begin to a...

Co-directed and co-written by Darren Grodsky and Danny Jacobs "Growing Up & Other Lies," is (as its title might suggest) about the trials of a last ditch, largely unsuccessful attempt to grow up -- after all, it's billed as an "anti-coming-of-age comedy." The film follows a group of friends (Adam Brody, Wyatt Cenac, Danny Jacobs and Josh Lawson) as they take an all-day walk down the entire length of Manhattan in an attempt to relive the uncomplicated ease of their early 20s, and spoiler alert: Things don't exactly go as planned. Check out this exclusive clip of Adam Brody doing his best to convince his very-pregnant girlfriend that a drunken Manhattan ramble with his buddies is more important than her last gynecological check up. "Growing Up & Other Lies" will be released in theaters and available on demand on March 20. Read More: Watch: Trailer For Indie Rom-Com ‘Growing Up & Other Lies’ With Adam Brody,...

Right under our noses, Adam Brody, Zachary Quinto, Amber Tamblyn and Taran Killam were all filming an indie in Manhattan. Word of this production has only now arrived as the film, titled Growing Up (and Other Lies), is getting some work done in upper Manhattan; a fan even caught Brody shooting in their neighborhood.
It was revealed that Saturday Night Live star Killam (who also has a part in Steve McQueen‘s Twelve Years a Slave) would headline as an artist headed back home to run the family business, and whose ambitions are hurt by an ex-girlfriend (Tamblyn). But now we have more, thanks to the film’s production company, so check out that synopsis below.

Taran Killam is a fairly recent addition to NBC's Saturday Night Live, but one expected to help fill the enormous hole left by exiting cast members Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg and (possibly) Jason Sudeikis. Killam has been great in his two years on the sketch comedy show so far and before returning for extra responsibilities this fall, he's lined up a few impressive feature film roles. The actor recently landed a supporting role in Steve McQueen's Twelve Years A Slave opposite Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt (oddly enough, one of Killam's impressions) but first he'll appear in two smaller films. Variety reports that Killam is set to star in Danny Jacobs and Darren Grodsky's new movie called Growing Up (and Other Lies). From the writer-directors of Humboldt County), Growing Up is a comedy about four friends who make a pact to walk the length of Manhattan...

Madrid -- Vic Sarin's "A Shine of Rainbows" and Nian Liu's "Li Tong" will have their world premieres in competition at the third Ibiza International Film Festival, festival director Xavier Benlloch announced Tuesday as he revealed the lineup of what organizers call the "Cannes after-hours."
Darren Grodsky and Danny Jacobs' "Humboldt County," Rachel Samuels' "Dark Streets," Uros Stoganovic's "Tears for Sale" and Leonardo Armas' "Radio Love" round out the official competition for the grand prize, called the Falco d'Or.
Scottish director Bill Forsyth, Spanish film critic Jose Eduardo Arenas and Indian producer Rohan Sippy comprise the official jury at the festival, which will showcase Terry Gilliam's work in sidebar.
None of the films in competition have screened in Spain yet, and Benlloch emphasized the festival's strategy.
"A good jury and good films make good festivals," Benlloch said. "Festivals aren't meant to be so Spielberg can premiere his latest film.

- If you thought Pineapple Express and Harold and Kumar: Escape From Guantanamo Bay would be the only pot-smoking movies to hit the big screen this year, think again. Magnolia Pictures has nabbed the domestic rights to Humbolt County, which has a much different take on marijuana than the ever-popular stoner comedies. This dramedy follows a disillusioned medical student who has a one night stand with a free-spirited woman. The next thing he knows, he's stranded for a summer on a California pot farm. Aside from pot, the film deals with some pretty heavy issues, such as family relationships, personal anxiety, and self-awareness. The picture premiered at SXSW earlier this year. The film marks a great beginning to some new careers. Written and directed by first-timers Darren Grodsky and Danny Jacobs, the film also stars newcomer Jeremy Strong in the lead role.
