Not only did he lose the much anticipated and fan-favorite role of Kang in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but his ‘Oscar vehicle’ Magazine Dreams was removed from the decided release schedule. While his career is still stuck in limbo, the first trailer for Magazine Dreams has been released, and the reactions so far are largely positive.

Following the domestic abuse allegations against him and the SAG-Aftra strike, Jonathan Majors‘ Magazine Dreams was delayed from being released back in 2023 by Searchlight Pictures.

Long-delayed bodybuilding drama Magazine Dreams, starring Jonathan Majors, is heading to the European Film Market with international sales firm Celsius.

Pic is getting a U.S. release on March 21 via Briarcliff Entertainment. Written and directed by Elijah Bynum, Majors stars alongside Haley Bennett, Taylour Paige, Harriet Sansom Harris, and Mike O’Hearn.

The official synopsis reads: “Magazine Dreams centers on Killian Maddox, a man consumed by his dream of becoming a world famous bodybuilder and one day gracing the cover of fitness magazines. He lives a lonely regimented life and his relentless drive for perfection only pushes him deeper towards self destruction. But beneath his tenacious pursuit of superstardom lies a desperate aching need for human connection. As he battles both the limits of his physical body and his own inner demons, the film explores the lengths one man will go in his haunting quest for recognition in a world that often overlooks him.

Celsius Entertainment has acquired international sales rights to the film, written and directed by Elijah Bynum and starring Majors alongside Haley Bennett, Taylour Paige, Harriet Sansom Harris, and Mike O’Hearn.

When “Magazine Dreams” premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, it seemed positioned to become one of the year’s breakout hits. Jonathan Majors was gearing up for a career-best year, with roles in “Creed 3” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” to come, while Elijah Bynum’s bodybuilding drama gave the actor the kind of showcase that many believed could lead to Oscar glory. A Sundance bidding war broke out, with Searchlight acquiring the theatrical rights and planning a late 2023 release.

Briarcliff picked up the rights to “Magazine Dreams” back in October after it was dropped by Searchlight Pictures. At the time the new distributor announced its intentions to release the film theatrically in 2025. “Magazine Dreams” will now open alongside Disney’s “Snow White,” Robert De Niro crime drama “Alto Knights,” and the horror/sci-fi film “Ash.”

Elijah Bynum directed and wrote “Magazine Dreams,” which won raves out of Sundance and initially secured an awards season release from Searchlight. But the distributor shelved it and then dropped it following the December 2023 conviction of Majors on a charge of assault and harassment. The film remained in limbo for nearly a year.

Writer-director Elijah Bynum’s feature hits theaters March 21, 2025, from Briarcliff Entertainment. Starring Majors as amateur bodybuilder Killian Maddox, the film’s cast includes Haley Bennett, Taylour Paige, Mike O’Hearn, Harrison Page and Harriet Sansom Harris.

That was before Majors’ indiscretions with a former girlfriend cast a creepy light on the emotionally troubled aspiring bodybuilder character he plays in the film, prompting Searchlight to drop the picture as Majors’ wound through the legal system. He was eventually found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of assault and harassment against his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari.

Beyond the high price paid by Majors — who transformed his body eating 6100 calories daily and training six days a week, and wound up exiting the Avengers films and had just come off a terrific performance opposite Michael B. Jordan in Creed III – a lot of people worked hard on Magazine Dreams, and it seemed all for naught.

There was a period of time, not that long ago, when it seemed that Magazine Dreams, the 2023 Sundance favorite starring Jonathan Majors, may never see the light of day.
