The Cannes Film Festival witnessed the unveiling of the first look posters for “Love in Vietnam”, an India-Vietnam collaborative feature film marking Omung Kumar’s production debut.

Starring Shantanu Maheshwari, Avneet Kaur, and popular Vietnamese actress KhaNgan, the film is directed by Rahhat Shah Kazmi.

The production team includes Omung Kumar, Captain Rahul Bali, Rahhat Shah Kazmi, and Abhishek Ankur, with co-producers Tariq Khan, Zeba Sajid, and Samten Hills, Dalat, and associate producer Vikas Sharma.

When debutant director Rajat Kazmi submitted his hard-hitting treatise on the unrest in the Kashmir Valley for censoring, he expected plenty of trouble over the volatile subject and candid dialogues about the State of siege. Instead he was told that the film would have to be viewed by a Muslim individual to ensure the religious references were current.

Kazmi who is a Kashmiri Muslim found the precondition strange. "I knew what I was talking about in Identity Card. The issue of Kashmiri militancy and how brutally it affects local Kashmiri civilians is very close to my heart. So when after the censor panel viewed my film I was told it would have to be viewed by a Muslim, I was confused."

Finally though, Kazmi whose gripping film releases this week heaved a sigh of relief, as only two cuts were ordered and the film was passed with a 'UA' certification.

Billed as a story of the common man in Kashmir, Identity Card -Ek Lifeline is a Rahat Kazmi directorial film that ensue the story of a Delhi-based journalist Naazia Siddiqui (played by multi-talented actor and singer Tia Bajpai of 1920 Evil Returns fame) who arrives in Kashmir looking to make a documentary and revive her flagging career gets trapped into the turmoil of Kashmir. Actor Prashantt Guptha (formerly known as Prashaant Kumar) was last seen as the anti-hero in Jayantilal Gada and Shailesh Singh’s Hindi adaptation of Romeo & Juliet, Issaq. Though the film didn’t fare as well as the other Hit adaptation that followed, Ram-Leela, quite a few in the industry took note of this newcomer’s performance. Much to the amusement of many a viewers was the fact that this young actor, who was born and raised in New York and otherwise maintains the ‘chocolate-boy next door’ kind of look, could mould himself flawlessly into a hardcore grey-shaded Banarasi cop. Brotherly solidarity, blue-collar violence, pain and grit in a decaying Rust Belt town: this could be a feature-length Bruce Springsteen song. At heart, the story doesn't stretch much further: decent steelworker Bale steps up after his Iraq-vet brother (Affleck) strays too far into outlaw territory, Winter's Bone-style (Harrelson is a great scary baddie). But it's skilfully told and the acting is persuasively raw. Between the cliches, Cooper finds space to give us a tough, textured study of American masculinity in crisis.

Director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will head committee to choose country's first flagbearer in 50 years

Pakistan is planning to submit a film for the best foreign-language Oscar for the first time in 50 years, reports Variety.

The committee responsible for picking the entry has reportedly received tacit support from the Pakistan authorities, despite professing independence. Pakistan has only previously sent two movies to the Academy Awards since the foreign-language category was created in 1965: Akhtar J Kardar's Jago Hua Savera in 1959 and Khawaja Khurshid Anwar's Ghunghat in 1963.

British-Pakistani director Hammad Khan told Variety: "Pakistan has not officially submitted any films for the Academy Awards consideration in 50 years because the state has never taken film seriously, neither as a cultural art form nor as a valuable communal experience." The film-maker, whose 2011 debut feature Slackistan was refused a release in Pakistan unless cuts (which he refused to make) were carried out, added: "In all those years,...
