Meredith has a physics degree from the University of Michigan and a master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Vermont. Her masters thesis title was "Laser Diode Profiling Using a Charge Coupled Photo Diode Array".

Married to George Ostrow, a sustainable design architect. The couple have two children, AJ Ostrow and Elijah Ostrow.

She and her husband George were Peace Corps volunteers in the Fiji Islands where she taught high school math and physics. She is fluent in the Fijian language.

A strong advocate of recycling, mass transportation and simple living. She and her husband George champion all environmental causes.

Hometown is Detroit, Michigan. Despite popular belief, she is not related to the independent filmmaker Mike Binder, also a Detroiter, although they were both members of the Temple Beth El youth group at the same time.
