A defamation lawsuit against Netflix over its miniseries Inventing Anna — about the “Soho grifter” Anna Delvey, a.k.a. Anna Sorokin — is set to go to trial after a judge rejected the streaming service’s bid to dismiss the case.

In August 2022, six months after the Shonda Rhimes-produced miniseries debuted, former Vanity Fair photo editor and Delvey’s friend Rachel DeLoache Williams filed the lawsuit against Netflix, citing 16 instances in which she claimed she was defamed and vilified in Inventing Anna.

A former friend of con artist Anna Sorokin was allowed on Tuesday to proceed with a defamation lawsuit against Netflix over the Shonda Rhimes miniseries, “Inventing Anna.”

Netflix had argued that Rhimes and the other show creators have a “literary license” to give their interpretation of events. In rejecting that argument, Chief Judge Colm F. Connolly found that at least some of the characterizations in the show could cross the line into defamation.

The plaintiff, Rachel DeLoache Williams, was depicted as abandoning Sorokin in Morocco and ultimately betraying her to the authorities. Williams has claimed that 16 separate sets of statements in the series falsely portray her as “snobbish,” “unethical” and “greedy.”

Sorokin pretended to be a German heiress by the name of Anna Delvey. She was ultimately convicted of cheating banks and other businesses out of about $200,000, and served nearly four years in custody. She is now on house arrest while she fights deportation.

The upcoming Starz series “The Hunting Wives” has added four new series regulars to its cast.

Chrissy Metz, Jaime Ray Newman, Katie Lowes and George Ferrier have all joined the series, alongside previously announced cast members Malin Åkerman, Brittany Snow, Dermot Mulroney and Evan Jonigkeit.

The official description for “The Hunting Wives” reveals that the drama series “tells the story of Sophie (Snow) and her family’s move from the East Coast to deep East Texas, where she succumbs to socialite Margo Bank’s (Akerman) irresistible charms – and finds her life consumed by obsession, seduction, and murder.”

The series is based on the novel by May Cobb, who serves as an executive producer. Production recently began in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Metz plays Starr. Abby’s mother, a proud working-class woman and staunch Christian. Although she’s active at church and her daughter dates the star point guard Brad, she is not welcomed in the high-society world of the Hunting Wives.

As SAG-AFTRA and the WGA continue to strike and fight for a new deal, the picket lines are remaining full. In fact, they’re so full that multiple series have seen cast and crew reunions while marching.

Some have been spontaneous, as old colleagues run into each other by chance at a given location. Others have been planned, making sure to get as many members out on the lines as possible. So, we rounded up some of the biggest ones, ranging from shows long since ended, to those still fresh in our hearts.

As actors take to the picket lines as part of the SAG-AFTRA strike, This Is Us star Mandy Moore opens up about her minuscule streaming residuals for the show. The singer and actor played the Pearson family matriarch, Rebecca, for six seasons and 106 episodes of the popular NBC drama, which ended in May 2022. Moore even received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2019, though it appears she may not have always been compensated fairly for her contributions to the show.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Moore revealed the shockingly low streaming residuals she has received for This Is Us a year after the series ended. As she and hundreds of other actors took to the picket lines as part of the SAG-AFTRA strike, Moore says she received residual checks ranging from one penny to 81 cents from the NBC show's streaming deal with Hulu.

It’s Day 4 of the SAG-AFTRA strike and Day 77 of the WGA strike.

“Discover the past, live the present and fight the future,” was an apt message from The X-Files‘ 1998 spinoff movie and it’s one that could be applied to the current actors and writers strike.

It seems timely, then, that some of those responsible for writing and starring in the long-running sci-fi hit, were outside Fox as part of an X-Files reunion.

Star David Duchovny told Deadline that there are so many issues to try and get through, particularly AI. “I think the powers that be have a lot on their plate right now with trying to figure out, kicking the can down the road with the AI stuff. When Jimmy Kimmel last hosted the Oscars in 2018, the TV vet made sure ticketed guests were prepared for the show to go long (as it typically does) by delivering curated “lunchboxes” packed with snacks under each seat inside the Dolby Theatre. Rachel DeLoache Williams is suing Netflix.

On Monday, the writer filed a lawsuit alleging defamation and false light invasion of privacy against the streaming service for its portrayal of her in the series, “Inventing Anna“, according to court docs obtained by Et. Et has reached out to Netflix for comment.

Katie Lowes played Williams in the series, which follows the fraudulent actions of Anna Sorokin, who went by Anna Delvey at the time. Williams documented her one-time friendship with Sorokin in a 2019 book, My Friend Anna.

“This action will show that Netflix made a deliberate decision for dramatic purposes to show Williams doing or saying things in the series which portray her as a greedy, snobbish, disloyal, dishonest, cowardly, manipulative and opportunistic person,” the docs allege. “… This action is based firmly on statements of fact which are demonstrably false and the attribution of statements that she never made.”
