The Bad Sisters fate of Grace, the eldest Garvey sister, in season two wasn’t an easy choice for creator and star Sharon Horgan.

The idea for her — spoiler alert! — death originated in the writers room, but was initially rejected for being too grim. Ultimately, her fate played out first in fragments at the end of episode two, when Grace gets into a car crash, and then expanded on in episode three, released on Wednesday, with Grace’s funeral.

“We had the idea about what would happen but then we dropped it, because we thought, ‘I don’t know if we can continue the tone of Bad Sisters with Grace dying.’ It felt too dark,” Horgan tells The Hollywood Reporter of the back and forth around Grace’s fate. “Then we ended up going back to it because we couldn’t really see a world where...

Not everything needs a second season.

“Bad Sisters,” created by Sharon Horgan, Brett Baer, and Dave Finkel, and based on the Belgian series “Clan,” was one such series, neatly wrapping up the eponymous Garvey sisters’ story with ten episodes that premiered on Apple TV+ in 2022.

But of those many shows that should have left well enough alone, a rare few manage to pull off that second installment (if not more beyond that) with — if not resounding success, then aplomb. “Bad Sisters” didn’t need a second season, but Horgan and her team execute the near-impossible task of picking up, building out, and smartly continuing the story, even if Season 1 remains superior.

Season 2 catches up with the sisters — Grace (Anne-Marie Duff), Eva (Horgan), Ursula (Eva Birthistle), Bibi (Sarah Greene), and Becka (Eve Hewson) — a few years after the other four planned to kill Grace’s husband, only for her to end up killing him herself.

The five Garvey sisters are back in a new season of Sharon Horgan’s Bad Sisters on Apple TV+.

The dark comedy and murder mystery series centered around the death of John Paul Williams (Claes Bang) last season as the ten episodes shifted back and forth between before and after his mysterious death.

Two years after the “accidental death” of Grace’s abusive husband, the Garvey sisters have not yet escaped the secrets of their past. When new evidence resurfaces, the five sisters are thrusted back into the spotlight, and they must determine who they can really trust.

Grace gets remarried in the first trailer for the Apple TV+ original. Her sister Ursula walks her down the aisle to meet Ian (Owen McDonnell), the man who her dead ex-husband never was. But Grace still has not shed the secrets from her past.

In the first trailer for Season 2, which is set two years after the events of Season 1, Eva (Sharon Horgan), Grace (Anne-Marie Duff), Ursula (Eva Birthistle), Bibi (Sarah Greene) and Becka (Eve Hewson) are apparently trying to move on with their lives, with troubled Grace getting a second chance at love.

But the past – including Grace’s dead husband Jp (Claes Bang) – seems determined to haunt them while the present throws up another corpse.

“Two years after the ‘accidental death’ of Grace’s abusive husband, the close-knit Garvey sisters may have moved on but when past truths resurface, the ladies are thrust back into the spotlight, suspicions are at an all-time high, lies are told, secrets revealed and the sisters are forced to work out who they can trust,” reads the logline.

The streamer has released a trailer for Season 2 of the pitch-black comedy (premiering Wednesday, Nov. 13), with the Garvey sisters picking up the pieces after the “accidental death” of Grace’s jerk of a husband John Paul. Grace has moved on… and is even getting married to a new bloke named Ian, played by Owen McDonnell. They’re not mourning the loss of John Paul, either: “The world is better off without him,” Ursula insists. “Even the Pope would say that.
