Like many low budget action films, there is a constant, uneasy tension between ambition and what is possible. Hustle Down is aiming to be a Michael Mann thriller, but the constraints constantly degrade the experience. Whether it is low budget cameras, direction, or uneven acting.

An almost unrecognisable Tom Sizemore (with dyed black hair and looking elderly) is running around (and gosh is it a sad sight) in a cheap shirt, avoiding cartel hitmen.

I barely recognise the wispy voice of Tom Sizemore here, nor his ghoulish countenance and I certainly don’t recognise his ripe acting. He was one of my favourite actors for a long time, and it is so sad to...

It was about sixty minutes into Tyler Cornack’s one-hundred-minute feature film Butt Boy when I wondered aloud, “How can there be so much time left?” At this point, the culprit behind the disappearance of a child had already been identified as It professional Chip Gutchell (Cornack) in the prologue. The person positioned to take him down (Tyler Rice’s Detective Russel Fox) was more than ready to pounce. Both men were heading towards their climactic convergence point as a result of the script’s unabashed use of narrative convenience and everything seemed primed to be wrapped up with a bow despite almost half the runtime remaining. What else could happen? How much more absurd could the film get while retaining its unwaveringly confrontational straight face? The answer: a lot.

I think we can now say it is officially the festive season. So this means that I will try to watch as many Christmas movies as humanly possible throughout December (and the end of November). Ugly Sweater Party comes under the banner of Christmas horror comedy, so it hasn’t got a whole lot of competition.

I have previously enjoyed director Aaron Mento’s work. Starting with the unique and entertaining Standards of Living and then moving on to the very clever series idea of Choose Their Kill (look it up and enjoy), so when I discovered he was the director of Ugly Sweater Party my expectations were a little higher. Humanity has evolved to living underground, improving technology to help sustain their tenuous ecosystem outside of the subzero temperatures. This includes insulation injections to combat cold for up to 48 hours, strength enhancements, and even artificial intelligence boosters. It also led to the manufacture of a synthetic Humanoid race as slave labor. Super-strong, immune to the elements, and unable to reproduce, they do all the things we can’t in this new world wrought from a hubris that’s allowed the year to mark a second anniversary: five years since Ash-393 (Branden Coles) broke free from his “chains” to lead a devastating Humanoid rebellion that’s yet to be neutralized.

Nothing says “Full Moon” like the “Puppet Master” franchise. I am always surprised they come out with a new film and we are already up to the tenth entry! I have had mixed feelings about this franchise and this movie is no different. While it is better than the ninth installment, it is lacking the magic the first films had. Charles Band returns to write and direct this entry.

The movie continues where the previous movie left off. Danny and Beth have discovered that the Nazis have Tunneler and want to extract the serum from him to create super soldiers.

Phil Condit of Sick Puppy Pictures and Maria Olsen of MOnsterworks66 have teamed up to bring the world Happy Ending: an epic tale of sword-and-shotgun wielding hookers, hunky heroes and attacking aliens.

Set in a remote desert bordello, Happy Ending tells the tale of Madam Wang, played by Ange Maya, who stars in Phil’s soon-to-be-released Empress Vampire, and her band of lovely lasses who, with the help of their Johns, have to team up to stop a voracious being-from-beyond-the-stars from taking over the world!

Coughlin (Lake Dead, Farmhouse) and sibling actor/writer Ryan Coughlin (Back Slash, “Jericho”) promise to keep us begging for more twisted story, practical gore, and scantily clad scenery.

The film also stars ambitious up-and-coming talents Katy Foley (Disdain) and Zach Silverman (A Broken Code). Tara Gerard (Lake Dead), Mad Brad Potts (Puppet Master X, “Glee”), and martial arts star Morgan Benoit (The Forbidden Kingdom) fill in the blood-dripping tale with elements of mystery and a well-developed plotline.
