April/May 2003: With no water and little hope of survival, Aspen mountaineer Aron Ralston used a pocketknife to amputate his own arm and free himself from a boulder weighing 800-1,000 pounds that fell and trapped him for five days in a remote desert canyon in eastern Utah. His story 'Between A Rock And A Hard Place' was later published by Simon & Schuster.

Admits that the accident that left him pinned in a canyon for five days was no one's fault but his own, because he failed to inform anyone as to his location - the number one rule in hiking alone.
