CBS News’ third hour of “CBS Mornings” is set to debut on September 30, with Tony Dokoupil and Adriana Diaz cohosting the additional programming hour, the network announced Wednesday.

The program will extend the network’s flagship morning show into the 9 a.m. hour. “CBS Mornings Plus” will air weekdays on CBS-owned stations in Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Detroit and Miami. The show will also be simulcast to CBS News 24/7, the broadcast network’s free streaming platform.

The third hour will be produced by the “CBS Mornings” team and will include relevant headlines of the day, as well as pop culture, entertainment, health, wellness and financial news.

Both of the program’s competitors in the broadcast morning show market, ABC’s “Good Morning America” and NBC’s “Today” show, have already expanded beyond the initial two-hour timeslot.

It’s a crowded media environment, complicated further by the fact that here in the U.S., NBC is the exclusive rights partner, with video and behind-the-scenes access no other outlet can match.

So what can a sports outlet that wants to compete do? For Yahoo Sports, it decided to hire a bevy of gold medalists to serve as its Olympics correspondents.

The sports platform has hired seven-time Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix, who will provide coverage and analysis of track and field events; three-time gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings, who will cover beach volleyball; five-time gold medalist Missy Franklin and silver medalist Katie Hoff, who will provide coverage of swimming events; and gold medalist Shawn Johnson East, who will cover gymnastics events for Yahoo.

So the new Sunday-show moderator is introducing a different sort of recurring segment to NBC’s venerable public affairs program. “Meet The Moment” will feature conversations with influentials from outside the usual Beltway haunts, who will still weigh in on issues of importance to voters and the long-running show’s overall audience. Among those who have appeared: Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix, who discussed Black maternal health; actor Selma Blair, who has become an advocate for fair disability pay after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis; author and The Atlantic staff writer Tim Alberta, who has scrutinized changes in the Evangelical church; and Iranian activist Masih Alinejad, who has pushed for women’s rights in Iran.

Some of these segments will run again this Sunday. More “Moments” are expected in 2024.

Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group on Monday announced the launch of a new awards ceremony, theGrio Awards, with honorees set to include Tyler Perry, Dave Chappelle and Jennifer Hudson.

TheGrio Awards aim to celebrate luminaries from the worlds of film, music, comedy, television, sports, philanthropy, business, fashion, social justice, environmental justice and education, as well as cultural icons and innovators “whose many contributions positively impact America.”

Serena Williams’ presumed final match captured the world’s attention as numerous public figures took to social media late Friday to honor the game-changing tennis star.

Widely considered to be among the greatest athletes to have ever competed in the sport, Williams was knocked out of the 2022 U.S. Open after losing 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-1 in the third round to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City.

Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers and Curry of NBA champions Golden State Warriors will vie for best athlete in men’s sports at the July 20 ceremony, alongside Shohei Ohtani of Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Angels and Connor McDavid of the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers. Rodgers also landed a nom for best NFL player.

RuPaul has made Emmys history, again, shattering the record for the most Emmys won by a person of color as Drag Race nabs the Outstanding Competition Series honor for the fourth consecutive year.

Upon receiving the history-making honor from Allyson Felix and Jessica Long, the legendary Drag Race host dedicated his win to the LGBTQ community and queer youth.
