From family shenanigans to R-rated humor, TV shows set in the 1990s blend nostalgia with cultural relevance for both old and new audiences. City on a Hill authentically showcases Boston's crime scene of the '90s, while Cruel Summer twists '90s nostalgia with modern storytelling. Everything Sucks! delivers a realistic portrayal of '90s high school life, while Clarice dives deep into a '90s crime drama with a female lead.
The sole purpose of rewatching some of the best TV shows of the 1990s is to bring the audience back to the nostalgia of the decade. However, there are some modern series set in the iconic era of grunge fashion, upbeat pop music and changing technology. While these shows are more contemporary, they focus on the social and historical issues that defined the time.

Certain stories are worth adapting more than once. Such is the case for Mark McShane’s Séance on a Wet Afternoon. The two notable, not to mention distinct interpretations of this 1961 novel each capture a disquieting tale of an overzealous medium, and her plan to become esteemed and famous. Although one film follows the text more closely, the other takes creative license by underscoring the novel’s ambiguous supernatural element.
While McShane’s Séance on a Wet Afternoon was published years after spiritualism peaked in 19th century England, there was still a niche interest in clairvoyance, mesmerism and the like. As seen in Bryan Forbes’ ‘64 film, plenty of people seek out folks like Myra Savage; specifically those who stand between this world and the next. Or so they claim. Yet for Myra, she craves more than local repute. No, the protagonist of Séance on a Wet Afternoon wants everyone to know her name.

Screen Rant is pleased to present an exclusive first look at the trailer for The Bastard Sons, which is set to release in July. The indie crime thriller has been acquired by Cranked Up Films, which serves as the genre arm of indie distributor Good Deed Entertainment. Not only is it a tantalizing revenge thriller in its own right, it is also the feature directorial debut of actor Kevin Interdonato (who played Dogsy on The Sopranos).
The Bastard Sons centers on an organized crime group in New Jersey and the fallout of their boss being murdered. His son Vincent (played by Interdonato himself) takes it upon himself to get "the bastard sons" back together in order to take out the villain. As they attempt to get justice for the death of a loved one, they must contend with the dangerous criminal underworld in which they were raised and the demons it brings with it.

Exclusive: Mark O’Brien (Your Honor) will exec produce and star in the coming-of-age drama Topper from 1A Motion Pictures and Bad Lad Productions, which has wrapped production in Detroit. Others set for major roles include Paul Johansson (God Is a Bullet), Amanda Clayton (City on a Hill), and actor-comedians Jimmy Shubert (Entourage), Bryan Callen (Warrior) and Erik Griffin (Workaholics).
The first feature written and directed by actor Kevin McNamara (Why Women Kill) follows Topper (O’Brien), a hard-drinking middling comedian with a seemingly endless capacity for self-sabotage. Topper receives news that his estranged father (Johansson) is terminally ill and begrudgingly returns to Detroit to sell the family home, which was never much of a home to him.
While back in Detroit, the friends he left behind — Lucas (Callen), Cooper (Griffin) and Ray (Shubert) — aren’t shy about pointing out how far he has drifted off course, despite showing early promise as a young comic.

It’s been nearly two years since “City on a Hill” premiered at the 2019 Atx TV Festival, and while plenty has changed in the real world, it’s still the early ’90s in Showtime’s crime drama. Assistant District Attorney Decourcy Ward (Aldis Hodge) is still trying to clean up a Boston bureaucracy rife with corruption, and FBI Agent Jackie Rohr (Kevin Bacon) is still trying to do things the old way, his way, not exactly the legal way.

Here is a wrap up of all the news you need to know from Thursday, January 28.
ABC's Big Sky is expanding its cast.
Deadline is reporting that the freshman hit is adding a powerful new family as Big Sky Season 1 progresses.
Michelle Forbes, Britt Robertson, Michael Raymond-James, Ryan Dorsey, and Omar Metwally have all been added in recurring guest roles.
The outlet states that Forbes, Robertson, Raymond James, and Dorsey will all be playing family members, while Metwally is on board as a U.S. Marshall.
Since its debut in November, the series has been a decent performer for ABC and recently snagged a six-episode backorder.
The ratings have been solid, and it was steady after a six-week hiatus, which does bode well for its future.
Now that the initial mystery is wrapping up, all eyes will be on the next storyline to see whether it can keep up the pace.

“‘City on a Hill’ is that addictive kind of meaty and messy show we love at Showtime,” said Showtime entertainment president Gary Levine. “With the inspired pairing of Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge and the inspired writing of Tom Fontana and Chuck MacLean, we believe there is a rich future for this compelling series.”
The drama stars Bacon as a corrupt FBI agent who teams with Aldis Hodge’s assistant district attorney. City on a Hill, starring Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge, is to return for a second season at Showtime. The premium broadcaster has handed the crime drama another run ahead of its season one finale.
Showtime said that the Sunday night drama was reaching 3.5M viewers per week. The announcement was made by Gary Levine and Jana Winograde, Presidents of Entertainment, Showtime Networks, at the TCA summer press tour.
Created, written and executive produced by Chuck MacLean (Boston Strangler) and based on an original idea by Affleck, City on a Hill is set in early 1990s Boston when the city was rife with violent criminals emboldened by local law enforcement agencies in which corruption and racism was the norm, until it suddenly all changed. The drama is a fictional account of what was called the “Boston Miracle.” Driving that change is assistant district attorney Decourcy Ward (Hodge), who comes from...

An early episode of Showtime’s new Nineties-set Boston drama City on a Hill opens with two characters discussing the classic children’s book Make Way for Ducklings (set in Boston Public Garden) and the city’s 1980s school-busing controversy. The only way the series — produced, of course, by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, along with creator Chuck MacLean and the Oz duo of Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson — could more loudly declare its geographic bona fides would be for one of them to mention the time his buddy Sully...

That admonition credited to Coco Chanel about taking one thing off before leaving the house came to mind in the first minutes of “City on a Hill.” Sure, the line is a cliché, but it’s somehow less well-worn than the Boston-cop aesthetic that pervades Showtime’s new drama. This is a show that resists no opportunity, even a glancing one, to remind viewers precisely where it’s set. At a funeral, Kevin Bacon’s FBI-agent character comforts a widow that her husband was “like Jack Kennedy”; moments later, confronted by mourners he’d promised to pay if they showed up, he notes, “Did you forget what state you’re living in, pal? This is Massachusetts — tax is a bitch.” Elsewhere, a friend monologues that Bacon’s Jackie Rohr is “a classic Boston asshole — from a time in this city when things were so f–ked up that if...
