By the time he was nominated for Best Actor in Elia Kazan’s adaptation of the second half of John Steinbeck’s novel, James Dean was dead and buried. This was the only one of his starring vehicles to be released while he was alive. Reportedly Steinbeck felt the movie was as good or better than the book. Great use of early CinemaScope.

Steve McQueen died at the age of 50 on Nov. 7, 1980, after suffering cardiac arrest. The Indiana native made a name for himself starring as the rugged antihero in classic 1960s films like Bullitt, The Great Escape, The Thomas Crown Affair, and The Magnificent Seven; he was dubbed "The King of Cool" thanks to his good looks - That sandy blond hair! Those piercing baby blues! - laid-back attitude, and penchant for doing his own stunts. We're paying homage to Steve McQueen with a look back at his most memorable (and most handsome) photos over the years. Scroll through to see them all now. Dennis Hopper was a legend. His tumultuous career — replete with soaring highs and harrowing lows — was matched only by his turbulent and unruly personal life. The director behind the prototype for American independent cinema, the classic “Easy Rider,” Hopper’s career began alongside that of James Dean, whom he shared the screen with twice, before bottoming out with his ambitious disaster “The Last Movie” when he was blackballed by the industry for his indignance and difficult attitude.

The Burtka-Harris clan has won Halloween — again.
Late Monday night, Neil Patrick Harris shared a photo of himself, husband David Burtka and their 7-year-old twins Gideon Scott and Harper Grace decked out in their midway best.
For their 2017 family ensemble — posed in front of a carnival backdrop — Harris took on the role of ringmaster, while Burtka dressed as a creepy clown. Gideon opted for a “World’s Strongest Man” costume, and his sister Harper rocked a full face of hair as a bearded lady.

When Kip Moore released his debut album, Up All Night, in 2012, it was a success almost out of the gate. With hits like “Something ‘Bout a Truck,’ which Moore’s sexy, raspy delivery managed to elevate out of country’s truck rut, “Hey Pretty Girl” and “Beer Money,” the album put the Tifton, Georgia, native in the spotlight. But despite critical kudos, his sonically ambitious second album Wild Ones underperformed, and suddenly the town that hailed him as a new original voice got busy writing his swan song. It was, Moore tells People, “a kick in the teeth.”

It's more than 25 years since Terminator 2: Judgment Day first emerged, but actor Robert Patrick still carries the same cool, shark-like look of his shape-shifting villain, the T-1000. When Patrick fixes me with his sharp blue eyes, I can almost imagine his right arm quietly morphing into a sharp, chrome spear... and then he smiles, lets out a raucous laugh and the illusion is, thankfully, broken.

Robert Patrick was so perfect for the role of the liquid metal T-1000 villain in James Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgement Day. What's crazy is that he originally didn't have the part. According to Patrick, Cameron had originally cast another actor in the role. That actor was rock star, Billy Idol!
As you know, the classic movie is being re-released in theaters in 3D next week and when talking about the film with THR, Patrick revealed:
"Billy Idol was set to do the role of the T-1000, as I understand. I can tell you that I saw Billy's image when I went to Stan Winston after I got the role. Unfortunately, he got into a motorcycle accident and busted up his leg, so he wasn't able to physically do what the role demanded."

One of the greatest action classics of the 1990s almost had a very different, ”Rebel Yell”-y sort of vibe. That’s according to The Hollywood Reporter, which recently talked to Terminator 2 star Robert Patrick about the film’s upcoming re-release, and who revealed that his star-making turn as the icily lethal T-1000 almost went to singer Billy Idol instead. “Billy Idol was set to do the role of the T-1000, as I understand,” Patrick said. “I can tell you that I saw Billy’s image when I went to Stan Winston after I got the role. Unfortunately, he got into a motorcycle accident and busted up his leg, so he wasn’t able to physically do what the role demanded.”

It is a spooky story and one that clearly bothered Alec Guinness.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.
This week’s question: “The Book of Henry” has been assailed by critics. But let’s look beyond this particular reviled new release. What’s the worst movie you’ve ever reviewed?
Alissa Wilkinson (@alissamarie), Vox
It’s unfortunately not even a contest: “God’s Not Dead 2,” which I reviewed for Flavorwire and then wrote about it further for Thrillist. (The first movie is actually far worse, but I didn’t review it.) They’re actually not the worst-made movies I’ve seen, but as a Christian and a film critic, I find them so actively offensive and cynical that it’s somehow even more depressing.
I didn’t derive any joy from the process, but it felt important that I write about it.

Before Bruce Almighty, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective or even In Living Color, there was only one way to experience the comedy magic of Jim Carrey: onstage. Over countless late nights in the ‘70s and ‘80s, thousands of people watched stand-up comedians such as Carrey hone their craft at the Los Angeles club The Comedy Store. The beginning of his 10,000-mile journey from Ontario, Canada, to stardom in the U.S. began with a single step on stage at the legendary venue, which serves as the setting of his new Showtime drama, I’m Dying Up Here, exploring the lives and careers of up-and-coming comedians.
“I came here when I was 17, on a bus, basically, and got off at The Comedy Store,” Carrey told Et in 1992, which at the time was just two years into his run on the Fox sketch comedy series In Living Color. Run by co-founder Mitzi Shore (also mother to the actor Pauley...

Joe Hyams, the highly respected publicity executive who worked at Warner Bros for more than 40 years, died today. He was 90. Hyams, who had served in the Marines before coming to the entertainment industry, was relied upon by studio heads, filmmakers and celebs going back to the days of John Wayne, James Dean, Burt Lancaster, Stanley Kubrick, François Truffaut and Federico Fellini. But one of the longest-lasting relationships in town was between him and his friend Clint Ea…...

A title like Promised Land can be appreciated for its duality: primarily meaning a land of promise but also, in another sense, a land that was promised. We’re talking about the United States of course, or rather filmmaker Eugene Jarecki is in his latest documentary. It’s an abstract road movie, fueled on disillusionment and rock and roll, and one that attempts the quite ambitious task of sketching out a narrative line to link the rise and decline of the nation with the rise and decline of Elvis Presley. If Jarecki struggles a little with this alchemy at times it is because Promised Land is essentially three movies in one: a detailed account of the King’s career; a loose account of the last 80 years of American politics; and a musical performance film. It can be a little jarring to shift between those gears but the director has form...

Actor likened to James Dean in his youth who was adopted in middle age by hip directors such as Quentin Tarantino
Michael Parks, who has died aged 77, was a softly spoken character actor who enjoyed a prolific and chequered film and television career, largely in the exploitation genre. In middle age he was adopted as something of a mascot by the hip directors Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez and Kevin Smith. “Michael was, and will likely for ever remain, the best actor I’ve ever known,” said Smith, who directed him as a menacing preacher in Red State (2011) and as a sinister seaman with a bizarre walrus fixation in Tusk (2014). Both roles were written especially for him by Smith, who said: “He will take a page of dialogue and deliver it in a different way than anybody else.”

Brad Pitt's belt is doing big work these days.
While promoting his Netflix movie, War Machine, the 53-year-old actor -- who has appeared noticeably slimmer lately -- has been giving off some major '90s vibes with his baggy pants. To be fair, that was a very sexy decade for the A-lister, who was voted Sexiest Man Alive in 1995 and five years later in 2000.

It takes a lot to stand out when you’re standing between Robert Mitchum and John Wayne. And it surely isn’t easy when you’re also standing in front of the venerable Howard Hawks. But this was the position 25-year-old James Caan found himself in when he took on the role of Alan Bourdillon Traherne, otherwise known as Mississippi, in Hawks’ 1967 Western, El Dorado. Though Hawks was nearing the end of his filmmaking career (this would be his penultimate movie) and Caan was just at the start of his (following two features and about five years of extensive television work), they were each entering the project under similar circumstances. Indeed, it was their shared experience on the disappointing Red Line 7000 (1965) that left them both wanting. It may have been a personal letdown for Caan, but that film’s poor reception wasn’t a deal-breaker as far as his prospects were likely to continue.

“Here is the screen’s most shocking exposé, of the ‘Baby-Facers’ just taking their first stumbling steps down Sin Street U.S.A.!” Robert Altman’s first feature film is far too good to be described as any but an expert step toward an impressive career. But he had to deal with a young actor who drove him up the wall, Tom Laughlin.

In many ways, Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux are the quintessentially cool Californian couple. She has her effortlessly tousled and endlessly aped locks, perennially perfect golden tan, and deep and abiding passion for paddle boarding; he channels all of the bad boy charm and understated acting chops of James Dean with a collection of motorcycle jackets to prove it. And this week the pair are proving that California is more than just a state, it’s a state of mind, taking their particular bohemian joie de vivre to the chic streets of Paris.

By strange and fortuitous coincidence, my meeting with Jack Garfein fell upon the nexus of several intersecting moments in history. It was Friday, January 27th — International Holocaust Remembrance Day. One week earlier, Donald J. Trump was sworn to office as forty-fifth President of the United States; and in the ensuing weekend, allegations of Trump’s unpunished sexual misconduct, callous attitudes toward women and courting of radical right-wing supporters helped bring about the Women’s March on Washington, one of the largest mass protests in the nation’s history. All around, people are anxiously reading the past with tenuous hopes and fears for the future. History, so often a thing defined after the fact, is currently in violent and furious motion.
Jack Garfein is living history, and he’s not shy about telling it. Born to Ukrainian Jews in 1930, Mr. Garfein personally witnessed as a child the rise of Nazi Germany...

Luke Perry still has that bad boy swagger about him, but in his new series, Riverdale, we've noticed one major difference from his James Dean-like image of the '90s -- his hair.

I told him in the second season I'm coming to get you. By the end of it, I'm going to have the coolest hair on TV!"

Like every Edgar Wright movie since “Shaun of the Dead,” the director’s fifth feature, “Baby Driver,” takes a ludicrous concept and turns it into a brilliant exercise in high style and a rush of big ideas. The director’s most ambitious work to date is a wildly successful romantic heist comedy, propelled from scene to scene with a lively soundtrack that elevates its slick chase scenes into a realm that develops its own satisfying beat.
If Busby Berkeley made “Grand Theft Auto,” it might look something like this exuberant comic caper, in which young getaway driver Baby (Ansel Elgort) speeds through highways and back alleys seemingly impervious to police advances so long as he has a smooth beat to guide his maneuvers. Operating under the employ of robbery maestro Doc (a stern Kevin Spacey), Baby quietly works off a debt to his boss by hauling two-bit criminals out of harm’s way,...

There’s a bit of a unique situation happening in the best adapted screenplay category this year. While every single person up for that trophy are first-time nominees, our attention is focused on the one posthumous contender: August Wilson. With the man behind Fences up for a trophy, he becomes the person with the second-biggest gap between their death and a potential Oscar win in history.
The Academy nominated Wilson in the best adapted screenplay category for Fences — directed by Denzel Washington who also starred in the film alongside Viola Davis — along with a talented group. Other nominees include Eric Heisserer for Arrival, Allison Schroeder and Theodore Melfi for Hidden Figures, Luke Davies for Lion, and Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney for Moonlight. Stepping into the ring has been a rite of passage for talented, mostly method-friendly young actors for six decades or so now, starting with (non-method) Errol Flynn as “Gentleman Jim” Corbett in 1942 and Paul Newman as Rocky Graziano in Robert Wise’s Somebody Up There Likes Me (a role inherited from James Dean) in 1956. For the past six days, Doc NYC has screened numerous documentaries that shine a light on untold stories, marginalized figures and crucial history. Tomorrow, the festival comes to an end, but before it closes, the festival will screen Takuji Masuda’s new film “Bunker77,” the true story of Bunker Spreckels, Clark Gable’s stepson and heir to a sugar fortune, who lived fast and died young. A classic American rebel in the vein of James Dean and Andy Warhol, Bunker turned his back on his fortune to live a simple life out of the public eye. He pushed surfing’s boundaries by riding very short boards in Hawaii and the Jeffrey Bay in South Africa. He also mentored skateboard legend Tony Alva and collaborated with filmmaker Kenneth Anger, leaving behind a complicated, nuanced legacy. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

The Nic Cage-starring thriller is a complete mess, but has moments of audacious brilliance. It shows that, at 70, Schrader is still taking creative risks
Age is not mellowing 1970s wunderkind writer-director Paul Schrader one bit. Now aged 70 and essentially an outcast in Hollywood, he’s spent the past few years, the sunset of his career, doing what his contemporaries were doing at the dawn of theirs half a century ago for Roger Corman: savouring the untold creative freedoms available to inspired artists on Z-movie budgets. Warren Beatty’s fascination with director and aviation tycoon Howard Hughes began in the 1970s, when he saw Hughes in a hotel in Los Angeles. Now, forty years since that encounter and almost twenty years since his last directorial effort, “Rules Don’t Apply,” written, directed, produced and starring Beatty as Hughes himself, finally hits theaters at the end of the month. The film debuted at AFI Fest on the evening of November 10, and the first reviews are praising Beatty’s vision, but craving more substance.
In his review for IndieWire, our own Eric Kohn wrote that, while the film is beautifully rendered, the story tends towards the harmless: “A sweet, old-fashioned Hollywood romance that just so happens to involve Howard Hughes as a supporting character, Beatty’s long-gestating project is a modestly enjoyable, well-acted nostalgia piece with just a touch of edge.
