For better or worse, Adam Brody will always be remembered as Seth Cohen from The O.C. The affable and awkward teen is easy to find inside the weathered and wiser 37-year-old Brody, but the San Diego native might never be able to shake his early-aughts pop culture iconography. Despite that infamous role, Brody has had a pretty consistent career over the last two decades, playing opposite Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, being directed by famed playwright Neil Labute and making guest appearances on beloved TV shows like House of Lies and The League. This month, he’s in the buddy comedy Big Bear, where he gets to sport a pretty mean mustache, and returns with the second season of StartUp on Crackle.
With two such diverse roles coming out in the same month and nostalgia for shows like Gilmore Girls and The O.C. at an all-time high, Brody sits down...

[Editor’s note: Spoilers follow for “The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 1, Episode 10, “Night.”]
The first season finale of “The Handmaid’s Tale” was rich with one of the show’s best traits: its ability to find human and relatable moments within these extraordinary yet awful circumstances.
And the emotion captured is as diverse as it is heart-wrenching. Offred/June (Elisabeth Moss), upon learning she’s pregnant, snapping at Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski): “You think I prayed to bring a baby into this house?” Nick’s (Max Minghella) quiet acknowledgement that it is, technically, his child. Moira (Samira Wiley) discovering via a license plate that she’d made it to freedom, and later stunned by the depth of human kindness that would greet her in Canada. Serena Joy snapping at her husband: “I know the law. I helped write it.” And of course, June opening the package smuggled to her from Jezebel’s, discovering something truly dangerous inside: the words of women like her,...

Chicago – Universal Studio’s “Dark Universe,” which is centered around its stable of classic movie monsters, isn’t a bad idea. But in the darkly inauspicious debut feature called “The Mummy,” everything unravels. This is a mixed, muddled, marvel of a mess that contains an assembly of special effects, but precious little life.
Someone apparently forgot to tell those involved, in this exercise in building a blockbuster, that monsters can be fun.
Rating: 1.5/5.0
Tom Cruise’s character of Nick aims for irresistible rogue, but can’t quite hit the mark. He’s an American soldier with a profitable side job ripping off antiquities to be sold on the black market. After an airstrike in modern day Iraq (played for laughs) he uncovers an ancient Egyptian tomb. Turns out an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella) went on a murderous spree when she learned she wouldn’t get to be queen, and massacred her father,...

1.6 Chapter Six
Primarily I’ve had nothing but positive things to say about Legion’s addictively disorienting first season, but I have criticised the show in the past for stalling the story. That ends tonight; this episode’s recess from the plot while David, Syd, and the Summerland crew are trapped inside David’s mind with The Devil with the Yellow Eyes is not only full of the stylistic flourishes that make the series great, but it’s also illuminating. This episode begs the viewer to look at the series from a different perspective while delivering key pieces of information and hints about where things might be heading.

1.5 Chapter Five
Legion is unreal. No other show on air is taking narrative and stylistic risks like this, and who would have ever thought such invention was possible with a Marvel property? Certainly an almost 80 year history of amazing fantasies, cosmic adventures, and elaborate science fiction in the comics proves that there’s a wealth of mind-bending source material available, but for all intents and purposes it would be much easier and safer to make a series like Netflix’s new, bland Iron Fist than to create something as challenging and visionary as Legion. Kudos to Noah Hawley and the kind folks at FX, take a bow.

Legion keeps reminding us that memory can't be trusted, so is that why we feel like we've seen this all before?
This review contains spoilers.
1.4 Chapter Four
After Legion’s confident, stylish pilot episode, I was immediately impressed with Noah Hawley’s slice of the Marvel universe. However, in that first review, I worried about Legion favouring style over substance and now four episodes in, that worry is starting to manifest itself. I’m a savvy viewer; I don’t need every plot detail spoon fed and I’m fine lingering in mystery, but that being said, I really feel like we’re spinning our wheels here. A lack of forward momentum seems to be shrouded by new questions, delivered in eye-catching ways, sure, but the rabbit hole is starting to look shallow.
A somewhat climactic ending aside, Chapter Four bides its time throwing small wrinkles into David’s story,...

The best superhero stories experiment with genre. The Dark Knight is a crime drama, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a classic espionage tale, Guardians Of The Galaxy is a space opera, and Deadpool is a satire. By using the conventions of other genres, these films told heroic tales that felt fresh in the face of superhero fatigue. Instead of Jessica Jones playing like a superhero show with noir elements, it stands apart as a detective series that just so happens to feature a super strong protagonist.

For the final week of November, horror and sci-fi fans have a few things to be thankful for, including some great films they can add to their home entertainment collections. With the holidays just right around the corner, Rlj Entertainment is releasing A Christmas Horror Story and Scream Factory is resurrecting a duo of classic films in HD on Tuesday as well—Ghost Story and Blood and Lace.

All of the "Girls Next Door" are officially off the market! Bridget Marquardt is engaged to her longtime boyfriend, Nick Carpenter, and she took to Instagram to announce the happy news to her fans. "Happy Oct. 1st!!!" the former Playboy playmate captioned a close-up of her ring. "Oh...and... Did I mention @nicholascarpenter and I are engaged?" While it could easily be a holiday joke, the blonde bombshell is a huge fan of Halloween -- and it would be very fitting for her have an engagement ring in the shape of a black widow. We eached out to her reps for official confirmation, but they weren't immediately available. The 42-year-old star met her beau when he directed her and fellow "Girls Next Door" star Holly Madison in the indie horror flick, "The Telling." They officially started dating in 2008. Marquardt is still close with Madison -- they even spent the day together on Wednesday at Disneyland.

Chicago – In “Men, Women & Children,” director Jason Reitman not-so-audaciously reflects onto viewers their world of silent screens and awkward impersonal interactions. As many stories (“Don Jon,” “Disconnect”) have taken on the torch of showing how we are, gasp! — connected to the world yet disconnected from those close to us — Reitman’s tale is just another one for the batch.

Many broken men populate Clint Eastwood’s knotty cinematic sandbox. An inciting action forces them to brazenly jump from normal life in search of revenge or salvation, burying themselves in self-righteousness and self-pity along the way. Still, despite this stubborn resolve their endgame often hinges on a homecoming of sorts, whether it’s written in blood or tears. By the end of 2014, Eastwood will have released two new films in very different genres that complicate this motif. Both Jersey Boys and American Sniper examine elite professionals whose work takes them on the road, away from the domestic confines of family and femininity to an isolated place where chaotic situations are common. But instead of doing everything in their power to return home, these men manipulate the classic “hero’s journey” as a selfish way to avoid the complex perspectives of those they’ve left behind or forgotten. The sketch series debuted April 16, 1994, and 20 years later it's safe to say we haven't given enough props to the silly, but often very funny show that showcased a broad range of talents (including Kenan Thompson and Jamie Lynn Spears) and some seriously grownup lessons. Here are six takeaways from the show that routinely dished out Vital Information For Our Everyday Lives. (I'm sticking to the early years of the 11-season series since, as a '90s Nick devotee, it's what I re-watched the most.) 1. Embrace your weirdness. Some billionaire will like you for it. "Earboy" was a pretty wild idea. A kid with gigantic ears (Josh Server) is picked on for his strange features, and he's even friends with a literal Pizza Face and Four-Eyes.

Why are more and more Americans falling under the sudsy spell of South Korean dramas? One theory: These shows tend to come in self-contained 16- to 20-episode seasons, making them easily digestible. Another: If you don’t speak Korean, watching one demands your full attention (subtitles!), meaning you get sucked in that much more quickly.
And then there are the dramas themselves — endearingly theatrical and kooky, with a sweetness that can be tough to find in grittier American fare. “Their portrayal of love is a little more PG,” says Jacqueline Sia, senior content manager of massive international TV library DramaFever.

The ratings for Duck Dynasty are down 40% from a year ago, but it can’t be blamed on Phil Robertson‘s homophobic and racist comments. Ratings were sliding before Robertson’s infamous GQ profile. Now I’m looking back at that interview and wondering if those comments were an attempt to drum up some publicity.
Aaron Paul says he’s in talks to join the cast of Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul. I have to admit, I’m intrigued at the idea of fleshing out Jesse’s “Capt’n Cook” days.
Matthew Perry‘s Odd Couple reboot has found its second cast member, reuniting Perry with his Go On co-star Sarah Baker. She’ll play the assistant to Perry’s Oscar.

If two recently released art pieces for the Guillermo Del Toro-produced Book of Life are any indication, the upcoming film should be a vivid visual experience. In a new interview with the Hollywood Reporter, co-writer/director Jorge Gutierrez offers two stunning concept images (featuring kaleidoscopic city streets and ornate skies) for the upcoming Fox Animation film (see one above), while also discussing his vision for the project's bold look.

From Amy Acker to James Frain, we celebrate Grimm’s habit of filling its supporting cast with geek favourites…
Read our look-back at the careers of Grimm co-creators David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, here.
When Grimm’s makers were looking for their Nick Burkhardt, the job was to cast someone with all the requirements of a leading man, but none of the distracting ‘wasn’t he in that other thing?’ baggage. In David Giuntoli, whose TV appearances had until then largely been confined to one-off roles in comedies and dramas including Grey’s Anatomy and Ghost Whisperer (the latter produced, not at all coincidentally, by Grimm co-creator Jim Kouf), they found their guy.
With Giuntoli in place, and a solid cast of regulars around him including Silas Weir Mitchell, Sasha Roiz, Russell Hornsby, Reggie Lee and Claire Coffee, it was time to fill in the guest roles.

A look at the pre-Grimm work of co-creators David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, a screenwriting partnership that’s lasted over thirty years…
A poker table in the late seventies, a bathroom in the mid-noughties… television shows have many birthplaces. Had screenwriters David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf not been introduced at a card game over thirty years ago, and had producer Todd Milliner not taken a 2006 shower in which he pondered what existing stories were in need of a modern update for TV, then Grimm might never have existed.
First, that poker game. Greenwalt and Kouf’s friendship began a couple of years before their first official screenwriting credit on 1982’s horror spoof Wacko, a job for which the pair were paid the princely sum of fifteen thousand dollars…

After making a name for himself in the dark dramas of American writer/director Neil Labute, actor Aaron Eckhart broke out with the role of Julie Robert's biker boyfriend in Erin Brockovich. Since then he has clinched key roles - from Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight to Nick Naylor in Thank You For Smoking - in a whole range of major movies. His latest incarnation is a vengeful monster in the sci-fi fantasy I, Frankenstein.

The Sing-Off doesn’t care if you understand when their show is on, for how long it’s on or if you think it’s crazy that they put all of their best teams up against one another in one episode. When you’ve stared cancellation in the eye and made it back to harmonize another day, you do whatever the F-clef you want! I liked that The Sing-Off went even more rogue than usual Thursday night; the hour-long episode was the perfect palate cleanser after two kind of exhausting two-hour spots this week. Before he directed award-nominated movies like Juno, Up in the Air, and Young Adult, Jason Reitman’s debut feature film was the bitingly sarcastic Thank You For Smoking, a tale of a unscrupulous spin-doctor for the tobacco industry. Being a self-described “Merchant of Death,” Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart) becomes the target of pretty much everybody from his own family to a U.S. Senator. During the course of the film, Nick is kidnapped by unknown assailants who strip him down to his skivvies and cover him with dozens of nicotine patches. Soon, Nick loses consciousness and later wakes up in a hospital, miraculously alive due to his personal high tolerance for nicotine that he gained from years of smoking cigarettes. While the movie moves along to a sharp political and ethical point in the end, this scene got us thinking, just in case we needed to quit smoking and burn through the four-week patch program in a...

With each passing year, Tiff is becoming more and more prominent on the film festival circuit, with more and more Oscar-primed films making their debut out in Canada. And with the initial line-up announced for the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, the trend is definitely continuing.
Amongst the many, many films making their presence felt out in Toronto will be Steve McQueen’s highly anticipated 12 Years a Slave, which launched a powerful first trailer earlier in the month. The film sees Chiwetel Ejiofor lead a fantastic cast, with Michael Fassbender returning to work for his Hunger / Shame director, alongside the likes of Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sarah Paulson, Paul Giamatti, and many more.
Opening the festival will be Bill Condon’s The Fifth Estate, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, alongside Daniel Brühl, Laura Linney, Anthony Mackie, and Stanley Tucci.

Nick Lachey recently dropped the new 98 Degrees record "2.0," hit the road with New Kids on the Block and Boyz II Men for The Package Tour and has hosting duties on new NBC series "The Winner Is" and just saw a fourth season of "The Sing-Off" greenlit for later this year – but Lachey says becoming a new dad which is his greatest achievement.

Los Angeles, June 28: TV host-model Vanessa Lachey says her nine-month-old son Camden is a daddy's boy and he becomes happy when her singer husband Nick Lachey sings to him.
"I think Cam (Camden) just loves anything that Nick does. He's such a little daddy's boy. It's adorable," femalefirst.co.uk quoted Vanessa as saying.
"'Sleepy Eyes' is one song in particular that Nick used to hum to Camden when he was still in my belly, so that one to us is kind of special. He hummed the melody, and then when Camden was born, he added words and lyrics to it. So, that one has a special place in our hearts," she said.
"I sing 'Baby.

As Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald's classic bursts on to our screens, it's not hard to see why this cautionary tale of the decadent downside of the American dream has returned to haunt us, writes Sarah Churchwell

When his third novel was published, on 10 April 1925, a characteristic review complained: "The boy is simply puttering around. There’s a five or six year span somewhere around the late ’80s to early ’90s that has become known as a true Golden Age of sitcoms, and if the last two or three years can be said to have one absolute trend, it’s trying to update and recapture the formula that made those shows into the ratings behemoths they were. Not only are there interesting markers of public appeal like the fact that these Golden Age shows are becoming the staples of Nick-at-Nite and TV Land, but the surprisingly popular original programming on TV Land is clearly leading the way when it comes to this revival.
The bigger networks are adding their own efforts that, though decidedly updated in one way or another, aim to explore the possibilities still open by way of the general sensibilities and frameworks that worked so well for shows of the past.

Note that the following interview contains mild spoilers for Olympus Has Fallen.
When the dust finally settled after the endless casting speculation for Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, there was one name above all others that really fired up my anticipation for the movie: Aaron Eckhart. It’s now been well over a decade since I first discovered his work, and ever since the glorious slice of B-movie joy that is The Core, I’ve remained a steadfast fan, with the diversity in his work always drawing me towards films I would never normally consider. Yet to my mind he still remains very much underappreciated, regardless of his talent and some truly memorable performances amongst some great movies.
