Besides WrestleMania, the Royal Rumble is easily the most anticipated WWE event on the pay-per-view calendar. The constant action, element of surprise every 90 seconds, and that hint of excitement when the camera pans away to suggest a particularly interesting entrant is coming, makes it one of the most fun shows to watch.

For the longest time Tna has sat as the number two wrestling promotion in the United States, pretty much by default. But as the vultures begin to fly low in Dixieland a whole host of companies are vying for that spot.

Over the course of 2014, wrestling fans have seen more releases and departures from WWE than any other year in recent memory. The WWE Network has forced WWE to cut back on costs, so it was only a matter of time before undercard guys such as Brodus Clay, Yoshi Tatsu and Jtg finally hit the bricks. There were some, however, who were more surprising than others including; Evan Bourne, Drew McIntyre and even Raw ring announcer Justin Roberts. Rey Mysterio recently made waves for defying his WWE contract — which he wants out of — and appearing at Aaa’s Triplemania event. Reportedly, there has been no punishment handed down to Mysterio since his act of defiance and apparently, there has been no communication or contact made at all.

Now, WWE contracted star, Brad Maddox has made a similar move. Maddox was spotted at last evening’s Pro Wrestling Guerrilla event in Reseda, California. Pwg is one of the most popular independent wrestling promotions there is. The company operates exclusively out of Southern California — or SoCal.

Drew McIntyre and Evan Bourne are now out of work. Hornswoggle and The Great Khali are very much employed. This is the world of wrestling that we live in and must accept. This past week we also had Seth Rollins struggle to come up with a coherent reason for why he turned on The Shield, Damien Sandow further devolving into an embarrassing act after wearing a flesh colored dance outfit, and Summer Rae dress up as a chicken. We may ask why, while Vince McMahon asks “why not?”

Perhaps the biggest question of the week, though, is how did Daniel Bryan not know he was being stripped of the title? After all, the belts were clearly hanging above the ring on Raw! It’s been another newsworthy week in WWE because we found out that Daniel Bryan won’t be cleared to wrestle this month, so he’s been stripped of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. It was also a week of bad news for 11 employees that were released on Thursday. It seems like there’s always something going on in WWE even if it is a quiet time in the schedule.

The Bryan news is a shame, but there’s nothing else WWE could have done about it. He had surgery a month ago, they tried to wait it out to see when he could recover and they’re not sure about when he can come back now. They had to strip him. The WWE locker room and insiders are starting to react to the shocking WWE talent cull which took place on what is being termed ‘Black Thursday’.

In all 11 people got released from their WWE contract – Jtg, Drew McIntyre, Jinder Mahal, Aksana, Curt Hawkins, Teddy Long, Camacho, Brodus Clay, Evan Bourne, Yoshi Tatsu and referee Marc Harris.

PWinsider has revealed details behind several of these releases. Regarding the Tatsu exit it is being said that there was an internal feeling for some time that the Japanese star had regressed in the ring.

As far as Brodus Clay goes, he had reportedly “fell out of favour” with the creative team. Clay had always put his best foot forward with his ‘Funkasaurous’ work, but clearly from media interviews he felt he should have been pushed more as a serious monster. The wrestling business is a very tough industry to make a good living from. On Thursday we found out via WWE.com that they had released at least superstars, one diva and a referee. It wasn’t expected, but none of the names were that surprising either. Guys like Drew McIntyre, Evan Bourne and Curt Hawks are all talented wrestlers, but the reality is if you’re not in a featured role on television then you’re expendable.

If you work for WWE you’re doing well financially, but there is no second game in town. While companies like Tna Wrestling and Ring of Honor are surviving, a lot of their talent are also working indy shows as ways to make money. The former member of Cryme Tyme had been with the WWE for the best part of eight years but the countdown clock has finally stopped ticking. This website, setup in jest because no matter how worthless Jtg had proven to be with the company and how little he was ever used (some modern fans may not even know who he is), counted his miraculous stay with the company and had been up-and-running for a few years now, but it crashed just moments after his release was made public.

When WWE did their original post today there were only five names on it. They then added four more to it twenty minutes later and it now appears that they have settled on nine names plus a referee. Unless more names are to be announced, that’s the end of a massive day of talent cutting that we haven’t seen the WWE inact on in a while.

Nxt’s impact on the future of the WWE was spotlighted this past Monday on Raw. The show after WrestleMania has become known for its shocking moments, surprise returns and big debuts. We all remember last year when Dolph Ziggler cashed in his Money In The Bank contract and defeated Alberto Del Rio to become the World Champion. The year before that, Brock Lesnar returned to the WWE to greet John Cena with an F5.

This year’s post WrestleMania Raw was centered around many Nxt talents. After weeks of hype, Alexander Rusev had his first singles match on Raw and squashed Zack Ryder. In what may have been the most shocking moment of the night, Nxt Divas Champion Paige made her debut and won the WWE Divas title. She made history becoming the first wrestler to hold an Nxt title and WWE title at the same time.

The WWE Wellness policy was quietly amended in July 2013 to allow for “Therapeutic Use Exceptions” relating to drug policy – in addition to an amendment that allows for talent with two violation strikes to get a strike removed. This should have been a massive story, but passed without much controversy, much to WWE’s delight.

This is hugely significant considering current WWE Champion Randy Orton was one of those men with two violation strikes to his name. That had meant Orton would be terminated if he violated again on the three strikes and out ruling. The policy amendment has now allowed Randy to be cleared of a strike. This clearance is achieved by going through a “Redemption Program”, essentially a re-assessment with a doctor and implementation of the doctor’s recommendations over an 18 month period.

The match debuted at WrestleMania 21 in 2005, quickly becoming a WrestleMania tradition and in 2010 proved so popular that it was given its own annual PPV event. Several top Superstars have been Money in the Bank winners including John Cena, Kane, Edge, Cm Punk (twice!), Rob Van Dam and many more. 11 of the first 12 winners have used the match as a springboard to winning a championship, and several times the match has helped a Superstar who has never win a World Championship break through to claim their first. Much like the Royal Rumble Match, the Money in the Bank match represents a golden opportunity for a Superstar to achieve immortality, and its entire lineage is presented here.

Former WWE tag team champion Evan Bourne returned to action this week at a Nxt house show in Tampa, Florida defeating the man formerly known as El Generico a.k.a. Sammy Sane.

Bourne, who has had been missing in action for over a year following a sixty day wellness violation from the use of synthetic weed a.k.a. “spice” and a subsequent car crash that broke his ankle in five places. The St. Louis native has since been rehabbing the injury and finally reappeared last night and it should be interesting to see how the company uses him going forward.

WWE.com has announced that “The Viper” Randy Orton has been suspended for 60 days following his second violation of the WWE Talent Wellness policy. The suspension was effective as of Wednesday and he will now miss the next two months of WWE touring, which includes June’s WWE No Way Out pay-per-view and July’s WWE Money in the Bank pay-per-view.

The official WWE website didn’t go into much detail and mentioned his suspension with the following;

Stamford, Conn. – In accordance with its Talent Wellness Program, WWE has suspended Randy Orton for 60 days effective today for his second violation of the company’s policy.

Failing the WWE Talent Wellness policy basically means he was taking a substance he shouldn’t have been, similarly the reason why Rey Mysterio is also currently suspended. WWE superstars are suspended 30 days for their first violation, 60 days for their second and usually the third suspension means they are fired.

Evan Bourne’s 90 day suspension for failing the wellness policy at the back of end of last year expires soon and he will be able to compete once again for the WWE.

PWinsider.com reports that there has been a lot of talk within the WWE for how they should handle his return. Back when he was United States Champion, there was plans to feud Jack Swagger and Evan Bourne after WrestleMania 28 with the idea that they would be able to pull off some good matches together. However since Swagger dropped the title to Santino Marella, it is unknown how close this is now to happening.

On Monday morning, the WWE ‘Board of Directors’ announced on WWE.com that WrestleMania 28 will have a 12-man tag match between Team Laurinaitis and Team Long. The winning Gm will gain sole control of both the Raw and SmackDown brands.

Officially announced for the two teams to date are;

Team Laurinatis: David Otunga (team Captain) and Mark Henry.

Team Long: Santino Marella (team Captain)

Expected to be added to both teams are;

Team Laurinatis: Christian, Alberto Del Rio, Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger.

Team Long: Kofi Kingston, R-Truth, Ezekiel Jackson, The Great Khali and one more participant which could be Rey Mysterio (if fit to return) or Evan Bourne (unless he is still in the dog house). It would have made sense to put Drew McIntyre into the match on Team Long and have him turn to Team Laurinatis but that doesn’t seem to be on the cards now...

PWInsider.com reports that former WWE Tag Team Champion Evan Bourne may be fired on completion of his 60-day suspension for his second violation of the company’s Wellness Policy, both of which came whilst holding the WWE Tag Team Belts with Kofi Kingston.

Bourne will be cleared to make a return on the March 19th edition of Raw two weeks before WrestleMania 28 and he could conceivably be part of the extravaganza but “a number of WWE sources” say Bourne’s time is up and he won’t be brought back.

No official decision seems to have been yet but Bourne’s inability to to stay clean in such a short time frame since his last suspension is probably the end for him. Triple H is known not to be a big fan of Bourne thinking he brings little to the table, though his wife Stephanie McMahon does see him...

WWE Superstar Tyson Kidd is on the lookout for a tag team partner, according to a new interview he gave to The Ottawa Sun (via Slam Wrestling).

Since the WWE Tag Team Title winning team The Hart Dynasty split up when his former partner Harry Smith left the company, Kidd has been stuck in something of a rut with WWE struggling to find anything creatively for him to do. With reports that WWE are on the lookout for a new babyface tag team to face Champions Epico & Primo now that Evan Bourne has been suspended for the next two months, Kidd has sit up and taken notice to try and fill that spot.

Earlier this week, WWE issued a 60-day suspension to Evan Bourne for a violation of its Talent Wellness Program, which is a nice way of saying that the guy failed a drug test. This isn't a new thing for Bourne, as he was booted off of television for a month this past November for his first violation, which was later revealed to be related to the smoking of synthetic cannabis, which is a nice way of saying "fake weed.

Evan Bourne’s second WWE suspension (this time for sixty days) for failing the Wellness Policy has left a spot open for a new babyface tag team that can challenge holders Primo & Epico for the WWE Tag Team Championship in the coming weeks. As we suspected yesterday, Evan Bourne has been suspended for sixty days by the WWE for his second violation of the wellness policy.

WWE.com announced the news earlier today;

Stamford, Conn., January 17, 2012 – In accordance with its Talent Wellness Program, WWE (NYSE:wwe) has suspended Matthew Korklan (Evan Bourne®) for 60 days effective Tuesday, January 17 for his second violation of the company’s policy.

This keeps Bourne out of action until March 17th 2012, though he could still compete at WrestleMania 28 on April 1st if he has amended the damage caused by his latest suspension and the WWE has a place for him. There is no word yet on why Bourne failed the wellness policy but we do know the first time was for smoking marijuana.

Tonight’s WWE Raw SuperShow takes place from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and a few matches/segments have been announced.

WWE today booked a rematch for the WWE Tag Team Titles where new champions Primo & Epico will defend their belts against Air Boom (Evan Bourne & Kofi Kingston). At a house show last night the WWE made the decision to switch the titles and with a rematch booked for tonight’s show, it does make you wonder why they couldn’t have just gone with the title change tonight on television instead.

Announced on last week’s Raw was a United States Title defence for Zack Ryder against Jack Swagger but with Ryder’s “injury” angle at the hands of Kane that has been put in doubt. Plus an angle out of John Laurinaitis declaring that Cm Punk shouldn’t have won his match against Jack Swagger last week...

In a huge surprise, Primo & Epico won the WWE Tag Team Titles from holders Air Boom (Evan Bourne & Kofi Kingston) at Sunday night’s live event house show in Oakland, California.
