Exclusive: Off the success of their viral short film The Crossing Over Express, writing duo Luke Barnett and Tanner Thomason have signed with Kaplan-Stahler for literary representation.
Amassing nearly two million views and an outpouring of messages from people around the world since its release last month on X, the short tells the story of a man seeking one last conversation with his late mother. The project came together 20 years after Barnett’s own mom passed away when he was just 17. With only “a handful of pictures and zero videos” of her, on his birthday a couple of years ago he received a text message from an unknown number which simply said “Happy Birthday” and contained a YouTube link.
“I clicked it, and my heart stopped. It was my mom,” Barnett recalled on X. In the video, she was “telling me how proud she was of me and how she wondered what I’d become.

Are you shocked to learn the author of /Film's three Halloween Horror Nights articles this year is a haunted attraction addict? Invite me to your Halloween mazes, hayrides, docked ocean liners, and Shaqtoberfests. I crave haunt season entertainment. Even better, I crave "Haunt Season Horror" movies. Is that trademarked? Can I coin that terminology?
Haunt Season Horror titles must take place in a Horror Nights-like maze or immersive experience, turning seasonal amusements into slaughterhouse backdrops. Marquee examples would be "Hell Fest," your corporate-branded Six Flags Fright Fest take, or "The Houses October Built," which ventures into the less moderated realm of do-it-yourself haunts. These films prey upon the rational fears of patrons who attend these pop-up "Scarehouses," stripping away the safety of regulated horror experiences. What happens when a killer infiltrates a place where commercial terror is purchased at a premium? It's the ultimate Halloween treat.

A couple of years ago, Luke Barnett heard from his mother – even though it had been 20 years since she died. The actor-filmmaker received a text from an unknown number with a YouTube link to a video his mother had made when he was 16, telling him how proud she was of him. It was particularly jarring, as he didn’t have many photos and no video of her. It turned out, his friend Jon’s father had recently discovered it on an old VHS tape and had it put online.
“The video really shook me up,” says Barnett. “It took me back to my last conversation with my mom. She was in the hospital, in a coma, and they let me go in one last time.” He was just 17 at the time, and says it ended up being more like a confession. “From talking to people years later, I learned that...

Working with friends to make a movie can sometimes create resounding critical and financial success, while other times, the collaboration is just a self-indulgent and futile attempt to gain fame. The filmmaking trio behind the new religious-based comedy satire, ‘Faith Based,’ including Vincent Masciale, Luke Barnett and Tanner Thomason, is part of the former group, […]

Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures has picked up the North American distribution rights to Faith Based, the Luke Barnett-scripted indie comedy that stars Jason Alexander, Tanner Thomason, Margaret Cho, David Koechner, Lance Reddick, as well as Barnett. Vincent Masciale directed the film which will be available in select theaters and on digital, cable, and satellite VOD platforms on October 9.
The plot focuses on two slacker friends who come to the realization that every low budget Christian movie starring 90’s TV actors makes millions of dollars. They soon set out on a mission to make “A Prayer in Space”, the story of the first prayer ever to be prayed… in space.
Christoph Sanders, Carly Craig, Richard Riehle, Marlon Young, Danielle Nicolet, YouTube star Lisa Schwartz, Chris Marquette, and Danny Woodburn round out the cast.
Barnett, Masciale, Thomason, and Tim Kerigan produced the pic, which premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

Apologies if this offends anyone, but faith based films almost exclusively are terrible. In fact, they’re ripe for parody. After all, movies made on the cheap, appealing to an audience that only cares about quality in the broadest sense of the word, and can almost be assured of turning a profit, are easy targets. The upcoming film Faith Based takes a comedy and satirical look at what would happen if a couple of regular guys, on the hunt for a quick buck, opted to make one themselves. The premise has a lot of potential, which luckily for audiences, leads to a charming flick with more on its mind than simply having a laugh at this inherently silly genre. The movie is, as mentioned, a comedy, centering on two fairly dim-witted friends. Luke (Luke Barnett) and Tanner (Tanner Thomason) are buds who love cinema, aren’t the smartest, and need to make some money.

Fear Inc. introduces an idea that’ll have most horror fans licking their lips, but ultimately fails to stick multiple landings. Director Vincent Masciale attempts to out-meta heavyweights such as Cabin In The Woods, but his self-serving plea to genre lovers comes across as more desperate than inspirational.
Characters talk in dialogue from past genre classics, making Luke Barnett’s screenplay seem poser-ish by incessantly focusing on past classics instead of investing in a righteous fake company. Fun horror appreciation (a Mimesis inspiration) unravels as “reveals” keep on whiffing, until you’re sick and tired of hitting the restart button. Not everyone can be Shyamalan right out the gate, and – unfortunately – when tricks aren’t also treats, everything falls apart.
Lucas Neff stars as Joe Foster, a horror movie buff who has become bored with the predictability of life. Girlfriend Lindsey (Caitlin Stasey) hopes to motivate her slacker lover, but...

A new horror film is set for the Halloween season. Vincent Masciale's Fear, Inc. will debut late in October. The film involves a horror junkie and a company that delivers the greatest scares. Written by Luke Barnett, the first trailer for Fear, Inc. is now available. The clip shows a group of friends harried by mostly unseen characters. More details on Fear, Inc. are hosted here. The film had its World Premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. Since then, it has received mostly positive reviews. One reviewer, at True Horror, notes the film's bloodspray: "when the movie takes it's dark turn, it just works the violence is brutal and they don't shy away from the blood and gore." The film is not horror-lite. Howard Gorman, of Dread Central, mentions the multiple layers, in the writing: "Fear, Inc.’s cast and crew are masters in the art of deception, making...

2Nd Update (9/23, 3:23 Pdt): An earlier version of this article listed Elle Evans as the actress who plays the title role in The Love Witch. That distinction in fact goes to Samantha Robinson. We regret the error. Update (9/22, 11:37 Pm Pdt): The same day this article was published, Paramount pushed back the release date for Rings from October 28 to February 3, 2017. Original Article: Fall has traditionally been viewed as the prime time of year for the horror film, but this summer was actually a pretty good one for the genre, with movies like The Conjuring 2, Lights Out, and the surprise smash Don't Breathe doing gangbusters business in the midst of blockbuster season. But the year's not over yet! With September in full swing, there are a number of worthwhile (and, yes, questionable) titles looming on the release calendar over the next three months. Up-and-comer Abigail Breslin – star of Scream Queens and, soon, ABC’s small-screen remake of Dirty Dancing – has landed a key role in new horror-comedy, Fear Inc.
Breslin now joins a cast that includes Lucas Neff, Leslie Jordan, Patrick Renna and Caitlin Stasey, while it’s understood that Vincent Masciale will take point to direct. The plot will revolve around a group of aloof crooks who offer out their services to people who want to experience the physical manifestation of their deepest, darkest fears.
But threatening to scupper those horrific business plans is Joe Foster’s (Lucas Neff) adrenaline junkie, who leaves the rest of the group questioning the scheme and one another when those fabricated scares become all too real. Are they really just pawns on a larger chess board, or victims of a sick prank?
Featuring a script by Luke Barnett, Deadline reports that production is already underway on Fear Inc.
