Michael “Newmie” Newman, the real-life lifeguard who appeared for 10 seasons on Baywatch as one of action show’s most popular characters, has died after his long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 67.
Newman died Sunday at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Matthew Felker, the writer, director and producer behind the new Hulu docuseries After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun, told The Hollywood Reporter. He was diagnosed in 2006.
“This terminal disease has allowed me a lot of thinking time, which I maybe didn’t want, but it’s brought me wisdom,” Newman told People magazine two months ago.
A onetime Iron Man competitor and firefighter who was 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds in his prime, Newman was the only Baywatch castmember who actually worked as a Los Angeles County lifeguard, having started out as a junior lifeguard in the shadow of the Santa Monica Pier when he was 10.

Michael Newman, an actor known for his role as Mike “Newmie” Newman on the hit TV series “Baywatch,” died on October 20 due to complications from heart issues. He was 68 years old and had lived with Parkinson’s disease for the past 18 years.
Newman passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and friends. Matthew Felker, the director of the recent documentary “After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun,” said Newman’s final moments were filled with the love of those close to him. Felker, a good friend of Newman’s, read letters and played videos from friends by Newman’s bedside to ensure “he knew he was loved.”
Newman stood out among his “Baywatch” co-stars as the only cast member who had experience as an actual Los Angeles County lifeguard. This authentic experience helped him portray lifeguard Mike Newman over 150 episodes, more than any actor except for David Hasselhoff, who played lead character Mitch Buchannon.

You know you loved to watch. Because there is no way that Baywatch was able to become the most-watched television show in the world during its decade-long, slow-motion run from 1989 to ’99 without a lot of people tuning in. Even if they didn’t want to admit it. “At least two people have come up to me and told me, ‘I learned CPR from watching Baywatch and I saved a life,'” says Jeremy Jackson, one of the countless actors looking back at their part in the global phenomenon in After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun, a fabulous, startlingly honest four-part Hulu docuseries from ABC News and filmmaker Matthew Felker. From its origins a spec script aimed at capitalizing on the surge of interest in California’s surf culture to the casting of David Hasselhoff and its ill-fated single season on NBC to a record-breaking popularity that spawned countless imitators, a big-screen adaptation and countless gags,...

The original Baywatch went off the air 25 years ago, yet it still processes a cultural ubiquity that eclipses arguably every other defunct TV series.
There was a brief spinoff and a panned movie (more of a spoof than a theatrical remake) and, just recently talk of a reboot. But no ancillary project has ever had the sway of the original: an infinitely exportable ode to a Southern California that never really existed, with its frequently recycled cast of hard-bodied Caucasians. So, at long last, it’s getting a documentary.
With participation from a great many former castmembers, including franchise face Pamela Anderson, After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun arrives Aug. 28 on Hulu. Many of them, including Traci Bingham and Erika Eleniak but not Anderson, appeared Wednesday afternoon in Pasadena to plug the project for TV press.

Minnie Driver managed to, er, drive us a little crazy when she decided to flaunt her fab figure in the Caribbean yesterday. Sporting a red, white and green two-piece, the 42-year-old actress hit the beach with her 31-year-old beau, Matt Felker—you know, the guy who sucked face with Britney Spears in her "Toxic" video. But there was very little lip locking happening between Driver and Felker, most likely because the couple was enjoying the sand and surf with the actress's 3-year-old son, Henry. Gotta keep things G-rated. No matter how good you look in that bikini.

Disney's right: it really is a small world after all. And it becomes even smaller once you start digging into the love lives of Hollywood's finest. So what's the connection? If you haven't guessed by now (and taking into consideration the above photo, if not, you might want to reassess your powers of deduction), Minnie's model beau Matt Felker is the very same ponytailed blonde who locked lips with Brit-Brit in her 2004 "Toxic" video.
