The best part about sequels is that they have the opportunity to build upon the narrative, the characters, and the worlds established in the first movie. Smile 2 proved that it was able to expand upon the events of the first movie, while adding a fresh take on its terror also. However, prequels are able to expand upon the mythology, and backstory of the characters, and in some cases, improve the original movie considerably.
There are many sequels with a higher Rotten Tomatoes score than the original, but when a good prequel gets everything just right, it brings a wonderful new perspective to the first movie. However, some of the worst prequels of all time prove that the best intentions of even the greatest filmmakers can backfire. Therefore, it's imperative for studios, and their creative teams, to think carefully about what made the first movie so successful, and plan accordingly for the backstory.

Spike Lee is expected to shop She's Gotta Have It series to other outlets as he works on Da 5 Bloods for Netflix.
She's Gotta Have It season 3 is up for grabs. Netflix has canceled Spike Lee’s series less than two months after its season 2 premiere, according to Variety. The series, which was titled after the filmmaker's 1986 feature film debut, follows Nola Darling as a young sex-positive, polyamorous pansexual graphic artist based in Brooklyn.

It’s been more than 10 years since our last appointment at Calvin’s Barbershop. Calvin (Ice Cube) and his longtime crew, including Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer), are still there, but the shop has undergone some major changes. Most noticeably, our once male-dominated sanctuary is now co-ed. The ladies bring their own flavor, drama and gossip to the shop challenging the fellas at every turn. Despite the good times and camaraderie within the shop,...

Barbershop 3‘s cast continues to expand with the addition of Margot Bingham. Bingham, who joins fellow Barbershop newcomer Common, will play the character of Bree, described as “a natural beauty who wears her distrust of men on her sleeve.” She’ll appear as a romantic rival to Chyna Layne’s ‘Kayla’, and abhors a romantic vacuum. The joint New Line/MGM production is due for release February 19, 2016. Bingham has also recently been announced for the cast of the upcoming ABC…...

Back in June, I did an interview with up and coming Chicago based filmmaker Christopher Nolen (Here), which proved that you don’t have to be in N.Y. or L.A. to achieve your filmmaking dreams. His latest project, which he discussed in the interview, "72 Hours," with an ensemble cast featuring Harry Lennix, Timon Kyle Durrett, Erica Hubbard, Terri J. Vaughn, Cynda Williams, Brian Hooks, Chyna Layne, Brely Evans, Tangi Miller, and Thea Camara and is set to be released later this year. The first official trailer for the film was released yesterday and is embedded below. The film deals with a reformed womanizer (Durrett) living the good life with a...

The new magazine Fearless launches this month by answering Vanity Fair's "New Hollywood" issue with its "Fearless Class of 2010."
While Vanity Fair was criticized for featuring only white actresses on the cover, Fearless showcases women of color. Getting the front-page stamp for the mag's maiden voyage are Tia Mowry, Naturi Naughton, Monique Coleman, Jennifer Freeman, Kyla Pratt, Tiffany Hines, Chyna Layne and Lauren London.
London, who has a child with Lil Wayne, revealed that she will star in the VH1 movie "Single Ladies," which Queen Latifah is spearheading, and she also explained her spirituality. "I'm always a fighter. With God, no person can stop you," she told the mag.
Meanwhile, Mowry, who stars in the "The Game," said she lives her life like the name of the magazine.

This is a review of Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire starring Gabourey Sidibe, Mo'Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, Sherri Shepherd, Lenny Kravitz, Stephanie Andujar and Chyna Layne, and directed by Lee Daniels. Despite being executive produced by Oprah Winfrey and featuring Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz and talk show host Mo’Nique, Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire, is no glitzy Hollywood outing. In fact, if anything, this is more Ken Loach by way of Harlem.

This video contains exclusive interviews with 82 women working in the film and television industry (one for every year of the Oscars) including Academy Award winner Barbara Kopple (1976: Harlan County USA, 1991: American Dream), actress Chyna Layne (Precious) and producer Neda Armian (Rachel Getting Married) to name just a few. This film was born six weeks ago, over dinner, as we discussed Kathryn Bigelow's nomination and wondered why there hadn't been more women nominated in the category of best director. The next week we set out to speak with 82 women -- one for every Oscar -- and asked them the following questions: If you had an unlimited budget to make a film, what would you make? What is your proudest professional accomplishment? Which women have inspired you? ...

'An Education'"An Education" is a wonderfully bittersweet coming-of-age story featuring a top-notch ensemble. Set in 1961 London, the film recounts what happens when Jenny (Carey Mulligan), a bright but bored high school student, falls in love with David (Peter Sarsgaard), an urbane older man who introduces her to chamber music, art auctions, late-night concerts, and sex. He is also a bit of a con man.Mulligan doesn't hit a false note, conveying the emotional life of a highly intelligent yet profoundly innocent 17-year-old girl. In Jenny's eyes, David is the romantic outsider, more so as he slyly seduces Jenny's reluctant parents—especially Jack, her irascible, buffoonish dad (Alfred Molina). Conceived in broad comic strokes, Jack borders on caricature, yet Molina makes him plausible and, in the end, sympathetic. Jack is misguided but he loves his daughter. Sarsgaard is fine as a warm and loving guy who can't help being a bastard as well.

Lest we forget, for all the talk this year about whether the New York Film Festival in particular and arthouse film in general have become elitist and unwelcoming to the general population, one of this year's major indie buzz films features no less a celeb for all demographics than Mariah Carey, in her fifth cinematic role.
Mimi and her man were out in full force at the festival's Lincoln Center screening of "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire," an impressively star-studded event also saw costars Paula Patton, Lenny Kravitz, Chyna Layne, Sherri Shepherd, Ephraim Benton and newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, who plays the title character, out on the red carpet. (Mo'Nique, despite the Oscar buzz her role in the film has generated, chose not to make an appearance.)
Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Bobby Cannavale, Wendell Pierce and Steve Buscemi were amongst the other stars who came out in support of the film.

The cast of Cadillac Records brought their movie to New York City last night, highlighted by Beyonce Knowles and Jay-z. The newlyweds and longtime loves hardly ever do the red carpet together, so it's such a treat to see him out to support his wife looking so happy. They're always having a blast somewhere around the world, but with her opening up a little about their marriage and seeing them together here might mean a new leaf for B and J. They weren't the only ones at the premiere, Adrien Brody had Elsa Pataky on his arm as always while Gabrielle Union and Emmanuelle Chriqui looked gorgeous solo. The movie hits theaters this Friday and between the cast there's more than enough beauty to go around, though Beyonce swears we won't be able to recognize any Sasha Fierce in her Etta James. To see lots more from the premiere including Kelly Ripa,...
