You're never going to believe it, but Alejandro G. Iñárritu has made an elaborately-titled, darkly comedic drama exploring the messy personal and professional lives of an artist who, in one of the film's many surreal moments, flies around through the air in a flowing single take.

Titled "Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths," the film is the latest from the director of "The Revenant" and "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)," and the first he's shot in his native Mexico since 2000's "Amores perros." Daniel Giménez Cacho stars as Silverio Gama, a revered Mexican journalist and documentary filmmaker who decides to return to his homeland after being named the recipient of "a prestigious international award." If it's a Golden Globe then, well, I have bad news for you, buddy...

‘Parasite’ First Trailer: Bong Joon-ho’s Palme d’Or Winner Is a Darkly Funny Modern Fairy Tale
Beloved South Korean auteur Bong Joon-ho’s latest already has plenty to recommend it, from a boundary-busting Palme d’Or win at Cannes to a massive box office showing in the filmmaker’s home country and even inclusion on IndieWire’s own list of the best films of the decade. Next up: a fall festival run and a prime awards-season stateside release date. So what’s all the fuss about? Let the film’s first U.S. trailer explain, which unspools a tale of two families unlike anything you’ve seen before.

Billed as a “pitch-black modern fairytale,” the film follows two very different families who find themselves tangled up in a complex bond that is threatened by encroaching outside forces. While the Kim family has street smarts to spare, they’ve got little else to recommend them — but don’t tell the rich Park family that, who easily let...

From ‘Schindler’s List’ to ‘A Hidden Life,’ the Unsung Hero of Awards-Season Trailers Is Mark Woollen
If you have an easy movie, the ones where the trailers practically edit themselves, that probably isn’t a Mark Woollen trailer. Woollen is the guy they call when the movies are more idiosyncratic, or their creators are, or both; the ones where the three-act structure may not be visible to the naked eye, or it’s hard to explain exactly what they’re about, but damn if they don’t make you feel something. But how can you see feelings, and in two minutes or less? What kind of marketing is that?

“I don’t know what marketing is,” said Woollen from the Santa Monica offices of Mark Woollen & Associates, where he employs a staff of 30. “I’m trying to represent the film. Filmmakers come to us in a vulnerable place. Sometimes we’re the first eyes seeing the first rough cut of film they’ve been working on for years.

Disney Executive Fears Taika Waititi’s Nazi Satire ‘Jojo Rabbit’ Is Too Edgy For Studio Image — Report
Disney’s first quarter with 20th Century Fox was hardly a success, as major box office flops like “Dark Phoenix” lost the company $170 million. A new report from Variety, entitled “Fox Feels the Pressure From Disney As Film Flops Mount,” reveals how Disney is moving ahead on the Fox film projects it acquired after the $71.3 billion deal. The merger means Disney now owns and releases films from indie powerhouse Fox Searchlight Pictures. First out of the gate this fall from the 25-year-old indie studio is Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit.” The Nazi Germany-set comedy-drama is billed as an “anti-hate satire” and features Waititi playing an imaginary version of Adolf Hitler, hardly the content associated with Disney’s family-friendly brand.

According to Variety, the Nazi subject matter at the heart of “Jojo Rabbit” is worrying some Disney executives. Variety’s report reads: “The scathing takedown of Nazism may, however, prove a...

The Lego Batman Movie Leads The Way For Golden Trailer Awards
Though some people may be unaware, there’s an awards ceremony held every year to honor the true heroes behind our favorite films: the marketing team. That’s right, the Golden Trailer Awards hand out statues to those who work tirelessly putting together trailers, commercials and posters for hundreds of releases each and every year. And not just in film, but video games and TV, too. It’s an incredibly comprehensive ceremony as well, with awards for a whopping 116 categories. Yes, 116 – though not all of those are given out on stage.

The nominations for the 18th annual edition, set to go down on June 6th at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills, are now in and it seems that Warner Bros. is leading the pack amongst the various studios, scoring an impressive 68 nods in total, 11 of which come from The Lego Batman Movie – the most of any title to be nominated.

Podcast: Meet Mark Woollen, Trailer Guru and Awards Season's Secret Weapon
You may not know Mark Woollen's name, but thanks to his work on some of the most attention-grabbing trailers of the past twenty years, you're probably familiar with his work. Whether it's the subtle heartbreak of "12 Years a Slave," the technical wizardry of "Birdman," or one of his most recent efforts, the immersive two-minute hurricane that is the trailer for "The Revenant," Woollen has been turning the teaser into an art form all its own. This week on Indiewire Influencers, Woollen sits down with Indiewire Editor in Chief Dana Harris for a conversation about his career in the field and what it's like to work with such a varied list of collaborators. Woollen's career has now spanned multiple decades, long enough to see a shift from a time when trailers played almost exclusively in theaters to now, when they're readily available at a moment's notice. But the changing venues...

Meet Trailer Editor Mark Woollen. He May Be the Most Visionary Director in Hollywood.
“It’s weird talking with my back to you this whole time,” Mark Woollen says in a high, soft voice, chuckling nervously. Draped over an Aeron chair in an untucked plaid shirt and stylish two-tone sneakers, he’s attempting to edit, eat, and tell his life story all at once. It’s lunchtime, or what passes for it during a nine-to-seven summer Monday that finds him jumping from screen to screen to screen: a half-hour reprieve during which he can pick at his tricolore salad, sip his passion-fruit iced tea, and cull footage on his editing bay from a freshly cut sci-fi film set on mute. This is the first step in a months-long process of turning a two-hour movie into a two-minute work of art. Over the past 30 years or so, movie trailers have evolved from dutiful clip jobs prepared by the monopolistic National Screen Service to the...

Golden Trailers: The nominees for best cinematic teases are ...
Do awards shows for advertising have “for your consideration” ads for their ads?

While your brain ponders that Russian nesting doll of a question, let’s take a look at the contenders for this year’s Golden Trailer Awards, the top honor for those clips that make you say, “Man, I’ve got to see that.”

The 15th annual competition doesn’t honor the best movie, just the most alluring promo. And it has a somewhat dubious special award known as the “Golden Fleece,” which honors the best trailer for the worst film.

The commercial for All Cheerleaders Die, featured above,...

'The Counselor' Trailer: Ridley Scott's Latest Is Filled with Sexy People Doing Bad Things
It's always nice to see a teaser trailer that does exactly what it says on the tin: teases. As trailer editor Mark Woollen recently revealed, the reason so many pieces of marketing reveal too much of a movie is because studio research shows that fans secretly want to know more about a movie they're about to see. The masses, even though they're complaining about it, actually want spoilers in their trailers. Don't worry, that's not happening with this trailer for The Counselor. You're not getting any spoilers out of this first look at Ridley Scott's new drama. You are getting a few crucial bits of info, though. 1. It looks gorgeous (no surprise there, since it shares a cinematographer with Prometheus). 2. It's written by Cormac McCarthy (No...

The Guy Who Creates Your Favorite Movie Trailers Talks Spoilers, Trailer Previews and More
Wired published a fantastic interview with video editor and movie trailer guru Mark Woollen. He started as a one-man operation several years ago, catching his big break by cutting the Schindler’s List trailer when he was in his 20s, and now he owns his own company. Remember the trailer for The Social Network and the ingenious use of Radiohead's "Creep?" That was Woollen's idea. He's also added his touch to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and most recently Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives. Woollen prefers to work on director-driven films so you won't find him editing the latest Iron Man trailer, but he shines in the world of Spike Jonze, Terrence Malick and the Coen brothers. Mark shared an interesting response to the...

Confessions of a Trailer Editor, from Online Trailers and Spoilers to Finding the Right Song (Trailers)
Wired has a fascinating interview with trailer editor maestro Mark Woollen. Never heard of him? Well, maybe you remember being enraptured by the trailers for "The Tree of Life," "The Social Network," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," and Nicolas Winding Refn's upcoming "Only God Forgives," all of which Woollen expertly constructed. Highlights from the interview below. Read the entire interview at Wired. On the online trailer phenomenon: When I began, trailers were not on the Internet. That’s changed dramatically over the past several years, especially with fan participation. We have instant critiques, for better or for worse. Everything has gotten faster... I was in a meeting with a director a couple of years ago. We had cut something that was on the short side, and he made a crack about it feeling like a trailer for a trailer. It’s bizarre that a year later, that’s...

Do audiences actually Want shorter movie trailers?
Julianne Moore, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Scarlett Johansson in Don Jon (2013)
Moviegoers love to complain about trailers. There are too many. They give away too much. They all sound exactly like Inception. But it’s not just the ticket buyers complaining — the people selling the tickets apparently aren’t happy either. The Hollywood Reporter recently broke the news that the National Association of Theatre Owners wants to establish new rules for movie trailers, limiting the length to two minutes, down from an industry-standard two minutes and 30 seconds. Nato declined to comment, as did the Motion Picture Association of America, which represents the six major Hollywood studios.

But the report comes in...

Key Art Awards 2012: The Insiders Get Their Due
This story first appeared in the Oct. 19 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. To those working in the entertainment advertising and communications industry, The Hollywood Reporter's Key Art Awards, to be announced Oct. 17 during a ceremony at Hollywood's Cinerama Dome, are akin to the Oscars. "Within our little niche of the entertainment world, it certainly is that honor," says Mark Woollen, whose firm Mark Woollen & Associates won last year's Grand Key Art award for The Social Network's trailer. "In its reach, our work is so vast but so anonymous. What's special is being recognized by your

Hey, You Made It!
Bérénice Bejo and Jean Dujardin in The Artist (2011)
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences brings you the Oscars (yep, that's why they're called Academy Awards), and on Friday, the organization announced that it was prepared to invite 176 new folks to its fold.

In a list posted on its website, the Academy deemed Matthew McConaughey, Jean Dujardin, Terrence Malick, Jonah Hill, Berenice Bejo, Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer and a host of other film luminaries worthy of inclusion in its nearly 6,000-member army.

The Academy has drawn the ire of critics who bemoan its overwhelmingly male, white population. A Los Angeles Times investigation found that of all Academy members, 94 percent are Caucasian and 77 percent are male. A mere 2 percent are black, with Latinos constituting an even smaller portion. Only 14 percent of members are under the age of 50.

Full members of the Academy select and vote on Oscars nominees. The organization was started in 1927 and is now governed by a 43-person board.
