Will Smith and Ben Foster in “Emancipation,” now streaming on Apple TV+. Courtesy of Apple Studios
An unrecognizable Will Smith stars as an enslaved man in Civil War era Louisiana, who decides upon hearing about Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation to escape from a labor camp through the bayou in an attempt to reach Union forces in Baton Rouge, in Antoine Fuqua’s Emancipation. Will Smith’s character was inspired by a real person, the man with the heavily scarred back in the famous Civil War photo, who really did escape slavery to reach an Union encampment. The photo, known as “Whipped Peter” or “the Scourged Back,” was widely circulated during the Civil War and was instrumental in convincing Northerners of the truth of the brutality of slavery.

Smith hit the carpet outside Westwood’s Regency Village Theatre just after 7 p.m., joined by wife Jada Pinkett Smith and children Trey, Jaden and Willow. He received cheers from the crush of photographers as he stepped on the carpet, responding with a hearty, “What’s the deal? Apple Original Films has revealed the trailer for the highly anticipated film ‘Emancipation.’
Directed and executive produced by Antoine Fuqua and starring and produced by Will Smith.
The film tells the triumphant story of Peter (Smith), a man who escapes from slavery, relying on his wits, unwavering faith and deep love for his family to evade cold-blooded hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana on his quest for freedom.
The film is inspired by the 1863 photos of “Whipped Peter,” taken during a Union Army medical examination, that first appeared in Harper’s Weekly. One image, known as “The Scourged Back,” which shows Peter’s bare back mutilated by a whipping delivered by his enslavers, ultimately contributed to growing public opposition to slavery.
Ben Foster, Charmaine Bingwa, Gilbert Owuor, Mustafa Shakir, Steven Ogg, Grant Harvey, Ronnie Gene Bivens, Jayson Warner Smith, Jabbar Lewis, Michael Luwoye, Aaron Moten and Imani Pullum also star.

On the face of things, The Devil To Pay could just be described as a revenge thriller but it does thankfully have more to it than many other films in that genre. After the disappearance of her husband, a farmer in an isolated Appalachian community fights to save her son when the matriarch of the oldest family on the mountain demands a payment of a debt.
In less capable hands this could be a very run-of-the-mill thriller but writers and directors Lane and Ruckus Skye (also writers of this year’s Becky) make things much more interesting. The film runs along at a good pace – coming in at a little over eighty minutes – and blends a great mix of drama with the occasional action and horror but always hard-hitting. Leslie Odom Jr. and Freida Pinto make sympathetic, easy-on-the-eyes lovers in “Only,” an absorbing post-catastrophe drama, in theaters and on demand March 6. Consider “Only” a variation on the “What would you do in this horrid situation?” subgenre. Only it’s more a “What would we do?” which can be an exponentially more challenging proposition. (Hard enough to agree on where to get takeout.)
Written and directed by Takashi Doscher, “Only” opens on the 400th day of an unceasing disaster that began with ash snowing down across the globe. The story moves back and forth in time, showing the pair under better circumstances and ever so slowly meting out the arrival and impact of the virus. As in many disaster films, newscasts and the radio broadcast do some of the exposition. That there is news, internet, water for a shower hints at the catastrophe’s strange arc.

"I'm not trying to control you, I'm trying to protect you." Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for an indie sci-fi drama titled Only, the second feature film from up-and-coming filmmaker Takashi Doscher (of Still previously). This originally premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, and arrives in theaters next month. After a comet releases a mysterious virus that begins to kill all the women in the world, a couple's relationship is severely tested. They hide out (from both the illness and the savages who hunt the remaining women) in their over-sterilized apartment, until they must venture out into the wilderness once again. Starring Leslie Odom Jr. & Freida Pinto, along with Chandler Riggs, Jayson Warner Smith, Joshua Mikel, Mark Ashworth, and Tia Hendricks. Not an original idea, but perhaps the film is good. Here's the first official trailer for Takashi Doscher's Only, direct from Vertical's YouTube: After...

Exclusive: Vertical Entertainment has acquired the North American and UK rights to Only, the Takashi Doscher-directed sci-fi movie starring Freida Pinto and Leslie Odom Jr that had its world premiere earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival. A day-and-date release is planned for the first quarter of 2020 for the pic, which is produced and financed by Swiss Army Man outfit Tadmor.
The Doscher-penned script questions the lengths we will go to protect the ones we love. When a mysterious disease threatens the global population of females, Will (Odom) is determined to keep his partner, Eva (Pinto), safe from the disease, the government and the bounty hunters searching for the few women still alive. Soon, however, the independent Eva realizes she cannot sit idle and let men decide her fate. The Walking Dead’s Chandler Riggs, Jayson Warner Smith and Joshua Mikel also star.

Exclusive: Verve has signed filmmaker Takashi Doscher, the writer and director behind the Freida Pinto and Leslie Odom Jr. starring sci-fi romance film, Only, which had its world premiere at this year’s Tribeca fest.
The pic centers on a couple whose future together becomes threatened when an unknown contagion breaks out across the world, killing only women. Chandler Riggs, Jayson Warner Smith, and Tia Hendricks also co-star.
Only marks Doscher’s second film following his 2018 feature debut, Still, which starred The Handmaid’s Tale’s Madeline Brewer and was recently sold to the Orchard for distribution.
In 2010, the Atlanta-native became the youngest director to sell a film to ESPN with his documentary A Fighting Chance. His ESPN follow-up captured the first ever summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro by a quad-amputee and won an Espy in 2013.
Doscher, who was formerly signed with UTA, will continue to be repped by Pathfinder Media and his lawyer Eric Suddleson.

When a horror film subverts your expectations, that’s almost always a recipe for success. One would be easily forgiven for assuming that St. Agatha would traffic in the same sort of territory as last year’s awful The Nun. Instead, while still thoroughly being a fright flick, this effort goes in a whole other direction. It gets pretty ridiculous towards the end, but for large swarths of the picture, it focuses on something grittier, more intense, and much more based in reality. By no stretch is this one of the genre’s best efforts, but it does way more right than it does wrong. The movie is a horror experience, tinged with religious extremism, or so it seems. Taking place in a small Georgia town during the 1950’s, we follow a pregnant con woman on the run named Mary (Sabrina Kern). Seeking refuge, she ends up in a convent...

A world without Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) would be a world where the Saviours are out of control. In this week’s The Walking Dead we see just what this would be like, and the after effects of a battle with a secret silent new killer edge to it.
With Negan out of the picture, Simon (Steven Ogg) is in full control. Taking war to the Hilltop he battles to take out the survivors once and for all. The after effects of this battle are felt by everyone, especially those left at the Hilltop to contemplate the losses the Saviours have brought to them.
If there is one thing to take away from this episode it is that Morgan (Lennie James) is steadily falling off the deep end. Continually visited by the now dead Gavin (Jayson Warner Smith) he is reminded of the events that took place between them. Gavin...

“The Walking Dead” Season 8 returned this Sunday with the devastating mid-season premiere, “Honor.” In this super-sized episode, Alexandria reels from The Saviors’ attack, one survivor suffers a mental break, and audiences say goodbye to one of the series’ original characters. Here are the best moments from “Honor.”
Back to Before – The episode begins with the shot of Rick (Andrew Lincoln) from the season premiere, muttering “my mercy prevails over my wrath” while tears roll down his cheek. A stained glass window hangs overhead. But then we see his heavenly vision of the future, where an older Rick leads a blissful life with Judith. Finally, we travel to the moment where Carl (Chandler Riggs) was bitten. He brings his new friend Siddiq (Avi Nash) to Alexandria without mentioning his wound, but Rick and Michonne aren’t there. Worried he will die before they return he spends the hours before the Savior...

The Halloween celebration recently continued beyond October 31st at the 12th annual Crypticon Minnesota, which once again brought together a wide range of horror genre actors, artists, and fans for a weekend to remember and conversations to treasure. While enjoying the amazing booth experiences at the event, I had the great pleasure of catching up with The Walking Dead's Jayson Warner Smith (Gavin) and Cooper Andrews (Jerry), to talk about their respective roles in the series' eighth season and the intense events of the seventh season.
Thanks so much for taking the time to talk, guys. Jayson, your character Gavin really intrigues me because he seems almost reluctant to be a Savior based on how he reacted when he found out that Benjamin died, and also when Rick came to the Sanctuary, he almost seemed like he wanted to take a time out and be like, "Let's talk about this.

DreamWorks Pictures has released a first look at their upcoming film Thank You For Your Service.
The drama follows a group of U.S. soldiers returning from Iraq who struggle to integrate back into family and civilian life, while living with the memory of a war that threatens to destroy them long after they’ve left the battlefield.
Starring an ensemble cast led by Miles Teller, Haley Bennett, Joe Cole, Amy Schumer, Beulah Koale, Scott Haze, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Brad Beyer, Omar J. Dorsey and Jayson Warner Smith, the drama is based on the bestselling book by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and author David Finkel.
Jason Hall, who wrote the screenplay of American Sniper, makes his directorial debut with Thank You For Your Service and also serves as its screenwriter.
Book synopsis:
No journalist has reckoned with the psychology of war as intimately as David Finkel. In The Good Soldiers, his bestselling account from the front lines of Baghdad, Finkel embedded with the men of the 2-16 Infantry Battalion as they carried out the infamous “surge,” a grueling fifteen-month tour that changed them all forever.
In Thank You for Your Service, Finkel follows many of those same men as they return home and struggle to reintegrate―both into their family lives and into American society at large. He is with them in their most intimate, painful, and hopeful moments as they try to recover, and in doing so, he creates an indelible, essential portrait of what life after war is like―not just for these soldiers, but for their wives, widows, children, and friends, and for the professionals who are truly trying, and to a great degree failing, to undo the damage that has been done. Thank You for Your Service is an act of understanding, and it offers a more complete picture than we have ever had of two essential questions: When we ask young men and women to go to war, what are we asking of them? And when they return, what are we thanking them for?
Jon Kilik (The Hunger Games series, Babel) produces the film, while Ann Ruark (Biutiful) executive produces.
Universal Pictures will release the film October 27.

A trailer has been released for the new military film Thank You For Your Service, which is based on a true story. The film focuses on "a group of U.S. soldiers returning from Iraq who struggle to integrate back into family and civilian life, while living with the memory of a war that threatens to destroy them long after they’ve left the battlefield."

Amy Schumer, one of my favorite comedians these days, is looking to show her dramatic side in the upcoming Ptsd drama Thank You For Your Service. American Sniper scribe Jason Hall wrote the film and will make his directorial debut with the project. Schumer’s role hasn’t been revealed at this point but it’s interesting to note she will be joining Whiplash’s Miles Teller in the movie.
Based on the book of the same name by David Finkel, the film follows a group of soldiers returning home from Iraq who struggle to integrate back into civilian life, with Teller leading a cast that includes Haley Bennet, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Joe Cole, Beulah Koale, Scott Haze, Brad Beyer, Omar Dorsey, and Jayson Warner Smith.
Schumer is certainly keeping busy these days with her next starring role in a mother-daughter comedy she co-wrote which has Warm Bodies helmer Jonathan Levine directing.

Recipient of the newly minted DGA award for Best First-Time Director, Ex Machina‘s Alex Garland is already deep into casting his follow-up, another sci-fi feature titled Annihilation. With Natalie Portman, Gina Rodriguez and Tessa Thompson on board, The Wrap now informs us that Jennifer Jason Leigh, coming off of The Hateful Eight and Anomalisa, will round out the quartet if talks go through. Adapted from Jeff VanderMeer‘s novel, it follows a group of women who embark on dangerous, secret expedition where the laws of nature don’t apply. While it’s not said who plays who yet, it follows an anthropologist, a surveyor, a psychologist, and a biologist.

Amy Schumer is poised to take a turn for the dramatic to join Miles Teller in Ptsd feature Thank You For Your Service, according to Deadline.
Having carved out a reputation for rib-tickling comedies, today’s news represents a marked and indeed welcome change of pace for the actress. Acting as the directorial debut of American Sniper scribe Jason Hall, Thank Your For Your Service chronicles the a group of homeward bound Us soldiers, who return to American soil after a long and gruelling spell in Iraq.
Struggling to assimilate with everyday life, the story largely revolves around the trials and tribulations of Miles Teller, Beulah Koale and Joe Cole’s character, with Deadline noting that Schumer isn’t on board to play a fellow soldier. Instead, she’ll be part of the ensemble cast that is left to deal with the fallout of modern warfare, both physically and psychologically,...
