Will Smith’s character was inspired by a real person, the man with the heavily scarred back in the famous Civil War photo, who really did escape slavery to reach an Union encampment. Will Smith’s Emancipation press tour rolled through Los Angeles on Wednesday as the Oscar-winning actor turned up to support the Apple Original Films’ release in a showing that marked Smith’s first major red carpet appearance since March’s controversial Oscar telecast.

Smith hit the carpet outside Westwood’s Regency Village Theatre just after 7 p.m., joined by wife Jada Pinkett Smith and children Trey, Jaden and Willow. He received cheers from the crush of photographers as he stepped on the carpet, responding with a hearty, “What’s the deal? What’s the deal?” Smith then spent a good chunk of time posing for photos with the cast and top Apple executives Jamie Erlicht, Eddy Cue and Zack Van Amburg before making his way down the line by generously giving time to each outlet.

Apple Original Films has revealed the trailer for the highly anticipated film ‘Emancipation.’

Directed and executive produced by Antoine Fuqua and starring and produced by Will Smith.

The film tells the triumphant story of Peter (Smith), a man who escapes from slavery, relying on his wits, unwavering faith and deep love for his family to evade cold-blooded hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana on his quest for freedom.

The film is inspired by the 1863 photos of “Whipped Peter,” taken during a Union Army medical examination, that first appeared in Harper’s Weekly. One image, known as “The Scourged Back,” which shows Peter’s bare back mutilated by a whipping delivered by his enslavers, ultimately contributed to growing public opposition to slavery.

Ben Foster, Charmaine Bingwa, Gilbert Owuor, Mustafa Shakir, Steven Ogg, Grant Harvey, Ronnie Gene Bivens, Jayson Warner Smith, Jabbar Lewis, Michael Luwoye, Aaron Moten and Imani Pullum also star.

Emancipation, directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), stars the disgraced actor and marks his first major film project to be released following the slap heard around the world.

Apple has finally set a release date for Will Smith’s high-profile film Emancipation, a film whose release plans were put into question after the actor’s infamous Oscars slap. The film will open in theaters Dec. 2 and stream on Dec. 9 in time for awards season.

Apple released the first trailer and poster for the film as part of its announcement, which comes days after Smith attended the first screening for the film, which Apple and the NAACP hosted in Washington DC.

In March, Smith walked on stage during the Oscars ceremony and slapped presenter Chris Rock, who had made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Smith, who won best actor later that night for King Richard, has been banned from attending the ceremony for 10 years and voluntarily resigned from the Academy. He is also prohibited from attending any Academy event during this time,...

With the help of Reese Witherspoon and her book club, Delia Owens’ novel “Where the Crawdads Sing” has been adapted into a film. Reese’s Book Club designated the novel as a selection back when it was first published in 2018, rocketing it up the NY Times Bestseller list.

The movie will bring to life the story of a young girl, abandoned by her family, who learns to live on her own in her family’s old shack in the marsh in 1960s North Carolina. The girl grows into a clever young woman who knows how to fend for herself and love off the land. Her life becomes a bit more complicated when romance enters the picture, and the story takes a sharp turn.

Exclusive: Olivia Newman (Where the Crawdads Sing) has been tapped to direct and co-executive produce Apple limited series The Last Thing He Told Me, based on Laura Dave’s bestselling novel of the same name, starring and executive produced by Jennifer Garner. Angourie Rice also stars.

Created and adapted by Dave alongside series co-creator and Academy Award-winner Josh Singer (Spotlight), The Last Thing He Told Me follows Hannah (Garner), a woman who forms an unexpected relationship with her sixteen-year-old stepdaughter (Rice) while searching for the truth about why her husband has mysteriously disappeared.

The Last Thing He Told Me is produced for Apple by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, who optioned the book from Dave, and 20th Television. It will be executive produced by Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter for Hello Sunshine, as well as Dave and Singer.

The Last Thing He Told Me is the second major collaboration between Newman and Hello Sunshine.

Arclight chairman Gary Hamilton made the announcement Monday, coinciding with the launch of the online American Film Market.

Consider “Only” a variation on the “What would you do in this horrid situation?” subgenre. Only it’s more a “What would we do?” which can be an exponentially more challenging proposition. (Hard enough to agree on where to get takeout.)

Written and directed by Takashi Doscher, “Only” opens on the 400th day of an unceasing disaster that began with ash snowing down across the globe. The story moves back and forth in time, showing the pair under better circumstances and ever so slowly meting out the arrival and impact of the virus. As in many disaster films, newscasts and the radio broadcast do some of the exposition. That there is news, internet, water for a shower hints at the catastrophe’s strange arc.

The slate for 2020 will include Polaroid, previously of Dimension Films; Ld Entertainment’s re-make Jacob’s Ladder; Xyz Films’ Code 8; Peter Facinelli-directed mystery thriller Hour Of Lead; Freida Pinto and Leslie Odom Jr. sci-fi film Only; and Skylin3s, the third installment in the Skyline franchise.

Also among the slate will be genre fare including Rock Paper Dead, Dark Light, Inmate Zero, The Host, True Fiction, Bit, and crime thriller Blood On Her Name starring Will Patton (Armageddon).

Exclusive: Verve has signed filmmaker Takashi Doscher, the writer and director behind the Freida Pinto and Leslie Odom Jr. starring sci-fi romance film, Only, which had its world premiere at this year’s Tribeca fest.

The pic centers on a couple whose future together becomes threatened when an unknown contagion breaks out across the world, killing only women. Chandler Riggs, Jayson Warner Smith, and Tia Hendricks also co-star.

Only marks Doscher’s second film following his 2018 feature debut, Still, which starred The Handmaid’s Tale’s Madeline Brewer and was recently sold to the Orchard for distribution.

When a horror film subverts your expectations, that’s almost always a recipe for success. The Halloween celebration recently continued beyond October 31st at the 12th annual Crypticon Minnesota, which once again brought together a wide range of horror genre actors, artists, and fans for a weekend to remember and conversations to treasure. While enjoying the amazing booth experiences at the event, I had the great pleasure of catching up with The Walking Dead's Jayson Warner Smith (Gavin) and Cooper Andrews (Jerry), to talk about their respective roles in the series' eighth season and the intense events of the seventh season.

The first teaser for Nate Parker’s slave revolt drama “The Birth of a Nation” debuted on Friday. The film, which won the Audience Award for a U.S. Drama and the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, stars Parker as Nat Turner, who led a 48-hour slave rebellion against his white masters. Armie Hammer and Aja Naomi King co-star alongside Jackie Earle Haley and Jayson Warner Smith. Parker also produced, wrote and directed. The trailer is set to the song Andra Day’s “Rise Up” and reportedly had everyone at CinemaCon in tears when it debuted earlier this week. The trailer also shows the most.

Amy Schumer, one of my favorite comedians these days, is looking to show her dramatic side in the upcoming Ptsd drama Thank You For Your Service. American Sniper scribe Jason Hall wrote the film and will make his directorial debut with the project. Schumer’s role hasn’t been revealed at this point but it’s interesting to note she will be joining Whiplash’s Miles Teller in the movie.

With Natalie Portman, Gina Rodriguez and Tessa Thompson on board, The Wrap now informs us that Jennifer Jason Leigh, coming off of The Hateful Eight and Anomalisa, will round out the quartet if talks go through. Adapted from Jeff VanderMeer‘s novel, it follows a group of women who embark on dangerous, secret expedition where the laws of nature don’t apply. While it’s not said who plays who yet, it follows an anthropologist, a surveyor, a psychologist, and a biologist.
