Welcome to another horror/sci-fi round-up! This time around we have word of two big cast confirmations for Independence Day 2, details on Scream Factory's Deep in the Darkness Blu-ray / DVD release, and information on the new Blanc/Biehn Productions film, Treachery.

Independence Day 2: Last night it was revealed that the first official cast member had signed on to star in Roland Emmerich's Independence Day 2, the sequel to his 1996 film that featured massive alien-induced destruction and larger-than-life characters. It's now been confirmed that one of those characters will be coming back, as Emmerich tweeted last night that Jeff Goldblum will appear in the sequel, likely reprising his role as the brainy and dryly humorous David Levinson, who teamed up with fighter pilot Captain Steven Hiller to take down the mothership in the original film. Smith will not be coming back to reprise his role as Steven.

Throughout the month of October, the folks at Scream Factory gave horror hounds plenty of treats with a slew of new Blu-ray title unveilings and now they are kicking off December with another gift for fans: two new title announcements and updated release dates for a bunch of Blu-rays, including the long-awaited Collector’s Edition of Dog Soldiers and the Blacula / Scream, Blacula, Scream double feature.

Scream Factory plans to release the delayed Collector’s Edition Blu-ray of Dog Soldiers on March 10th, while Blacula / Scream, Blacula, Scream is scheduled to come out on Blu-ray on March 3rd.

In addition to their Italian exploitation double feature of Exterminators of the Year 3000 and Cruel Jaws (slated for a March 3rd Blu-ray release), Scream Factory is bringing the Tom Sizemore-starring Dark Haul to Blu-ray on March 10th. A new teaser poster has been revealed by Shock Till You Drop for the new Colin Theys ('Banshee!!!') directed TV movie 'Remains'. The zombie movie, based on the graphic novel of the same name by Steve Niles ('30 Days of Night'), will arrive this December and revolves around a typical bunch of apocalyptic survivors who take shelter in an empty casino. The new teaser features some of the undead including a zombiefied hand holding a hand of cards. 'Remains' will air on Us cable channel Chiller and stars Miko Hughes ('Pet Sematary'), Lance Reddick ('Fringe'), Grant Bowler ('True Blood'), Tawny Cypress, Bobby Rice, Evalena Marie, Greg Nutcher, Anthony Marks, Cristina Santiago, Jessica Alexandra Green, Terence Schappert and Kevin Shea. This week sees a ton of genre movies coming out on DVD and Blu- Ray. The biggest being Predators, followed up by the remake of the cult classic Night of the Demons, a sequel to Mirrors, and Anniversary editions for Rocky Horror Picture Show and Psycho. Add to that a slew of indie and classic horror and there is a lot to choose from.

Predators

Directed by Nimród Antal

Robert Rodriguez presents Predators, a bold new chapter in the Predator universe. Adrien Brody stars as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors mysteriously brought together on a jungle planet. But when these cold-blooded human “predators” find themselves in all-out war against a new breed of alien Predators, it’s the ultimate showdown between hunter and prey. Predators also star Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Oleg Taktarov, and Louis Ozawa Changchien.

The number of home video releases on October 19th is not as abundant as in recent weeks, and fewer re-released titles means those that are available are much more special. In this batch one Adrien Brody flick competes with another, and at least two independent horror titles are making a splash. Two beloved classic films return in Blu-ray where one is supplemented by a documentary treatment of it.

Also, don't forget to strum & drum out with some tunes from Rob Zombie on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Finally, foreign horror gives us an over-the-top Japanese gorefest, a British zombie flick where the $70 budget was spent on tea and biscuits for the zombies, and Norwegian black metal.

John Doolan, the screenwriter of Synthetic Cinema International’s fifth feature Sasquatch Assault, got in touch to give us the skinny on the movie, currently shooting in Norwalk, Connecticut. Co-produced by Vijaya Cine Enterprises, the film is being produced and directed by Andrew Gernhard (who previously served as producer on Synthetic’s genre outings Banshee!!!, Blood Descendents and Werewolf: The Devil’s Hound, among others, and dropped us some FX-test and early set photos—see below).

TORONTO -- Veteran Canadian broadcaster Kevin Shea on Wednesday was named chairman of the Ontario Media Development Corp., replacing Marcelle Lean. Shea, most recently president and CEO of Sirius Satellite Radio, the Canadian franchise for the U.S. satellite radio service, will oversee the OMDC, which administers tax credits for domestic and foreign filmmakers on behalf of the Ontario provincial government. The Toronto-based OMDC also provides seed money to domestic filmmakers and other cultural product creators. Shea in a statement said he was taking the post just as Ontario's cultural sector, including its film, TV and music production businesses, were going digital.

TORONTO -- U.S. satellite radio service Sirius Satellite Radio on Thursday named consumer electronics executive Mark Redmond as president and CEO of Sirius Canada as it gets ready to launch its Canadianized satellite radio service. Redmond, most recently president of Thomson Canada, replaces Kevin Shea, a veteran Canadian broadcast executive who succeeded in securing a Canadian satellite radio license for Sirius. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission in June licensed New York-based Sirius and Washington, D.C.?based XM Satellite Radio Holdings to operate in Canada.
