Van der Sluijs read Drama at the University of Amsterdam, at which time he sporadically worked as an actor. He continued his studies at London's drama school Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance, where he studied theater directing. He combined his drama school studies with studying film at the London Film Academy.
Van der Sluijs has directed theater productions at venues including the Barbican Theatre London, Battersea Arts Centre, Royal Theatre The Hague, Compagnietheater Amsterdam et.al. Productions include a stage adaptation of La Haine (1995), nominated for a Samuel Beckett Award, and contemporary British and Dutch playwrights.
