Tony Costa was born in Hamilton/Ontario Canada in 1962, son of
Portuguese emigrants. At the age of elementary school his parents moved
back to their home land. After finishing High School around the 1980s
Tony returned to Canada where he studied and worked in the film
industry. He worked as a film lab technician in Toronto at Medallion
Film Labs and begun working as a clapper loader in several shorts and
music videos. Despite loving Canada he decided to return to Portugal in
1989 where he immediately started his film career in the camera
department as a clapper loader. Since this date he has worked in many
films as clapper loader, focus-puller, camera operator and up to
cinematographer. He is now a cinematographer based in Lisbon and a
professor at University of Lusofona. He was vice-president of IMAGO the
European Federation of Cinematographers between 2004-2008 and was
founder the of Portuguese Society of Cinematographers, and CPAV (The
Film Professionals Association). He has published a book, a Manual for
Camera Assistants's published by The Superior School of Cinema ESTC
(Lisbon) and he is the publisher and editor of several websites related
to Cinema. He has appeared as secondary actor in several films and
directed documentaries. He has concluded his Master Degree in 2012 and
directed his first short film O MEU AVÔ as director.
