When Grammy Award-winning soulster John Legend first read The End of Poverty by Earth Institute director Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, he was so inspired that he traveled straight to Ghana to learn more about the problems faced by African countries. The book made him realize how it could be possible to set impoverished villages onto the road of self sufficiency and progress, and the trip showed him how he himself could make a difference to the lives of millions.
Legend established the Show Me Campaign to raise the required funds soon after his fact-finding mission, and partnered with Sachs’ Millennium Promise Alliance to serve needy African villages. In 2008, both Legend and Sachs made a tour of universities all over the US to encourage social, economic, personal, and educational growth. Called the Poverty Action Tour, the sessions challenged people to support the fight against poverty, and promote the charities and groups that champion the cause.

London, July 5 (Ians) Covid-19 virus leaked out of a laboratory in the US, rather than the infamous Wuhan lab in China, claimed US economist Jeffrey Sachs. According to Sachs, who led a two-year probe into the pandemic’s origins, he was “pretty convinced” the virus was the result of ‘US lab biotechnology’, Daily Mail reported. […]...

I am an immigrant. I was born in a part of the world most Americans once deemed dangerous and untrustworthy. Yet on Oct. 8, 1969, I flew from Seoul, Korea to Chicago, Illinois, and was welcomed planeside at O’Hare Airport by my mom (my dad was home in Iowa with my four older siblings). My parents, Gervin and Georgene Green, were as unique as their names, and were early adopters, so to speak.
Mom and Dad — with an assist from Congress — saved my life.
In January 1969, I was abandoned in the doorway of an empty building in Seoul, Korea. I was blessed with healthy lungs,...

On Tuesday's Morning Joe, host Joe Scarborough went over some scary indicators for President Obama's reelection prospects, and spoke with Dr. Jeffrey Sachs about his upcoming book The Price of Civilization: Reawakening American Virtue and Prosperity. Sachs was critical of Obama's jobs plan, which he called a "gimmick," but his larger criticism was of America's failure to respond to long-term challenges. He busted out a bunch of charts to show just how bad things have gotten for average Americans, and for how long.

In discussing former Vice President Dick Cheney's cranial grenade of a memoir Monday, Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough seemed to ever-so-gently suggest that the Iraq War had something to do with the Arab Spring, the series of uprisings in Mideast dictatorships. The premise got all the traction of a Yugo on a hockey rink, and even managed to unite The Earth Institute's Dr. Jeffrey Sachs and conservative commentator Pat Buchanan in the common cause that Cheney, Bush, and the Iraq War succeeded only in weakening the United States.

Sam Vaghar started Millennium Campus Network (McN) in 2007 when he was a student at Brandeis University. He had read Jeffrey Sachs' book The End of Poverty and knew he wanted to do something to help address the Un Millennium Development Goals and tackle global poverty. So Sam convened students from around the country at a series of annual conferences to inspire, engage, and call young people to action and built a collaborative network of campus groups. Working closely with leaders like Jeffrey Sachs and Partners in Health Founder Paul Farmer, as well as celebrities like John Legend, all of whom serve as advisers to McN, Sam is giving his generation the tools and asking them to stand up and be active citizens. Sam, now 24, talked to us about how to affect change and the urgent need to tackle global poverty.

Madonna arrived in Malawi over the weekend for a few days of philanthropic work, and she started things off yesterday by touring Millennium Village in Lilongwe with Dr. Jeffrey Sachs and her daughters, Lourdes and Mercy. Madonna's girls were in the same town again today for a bricklaying ceremony as construction started on her $15 million Raising Malawi Academy for Girls, which is expected to open next year. In a blog post on her foundation's website Madonna wrote, "It is with tremendous joy that I return to Malawi to lay the first brick in the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls. By educating girls we will rebuild this community and raise this nation." The endeavor is just the latest in Madonna's extensive efforts to help the African nation, as her charity is reported to be helping 25,000 orphaned children in the country. Madonna blogged Monday about laying the first bricks for her new school in the African country of Malawi. In a blog post titled, "Laying the First Brick at the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls," the mom of four (including two little ones adopted from Malawi) wrote: "On my first visit to Malawi, I was devastated to meet child after child who had been orphaned by AIDS. Having lost my mother at such a young age, I felt a close connection to these children. Their stories had touched my own. "In a country of 14 million, a staggering one million children have been left alone with the responsibility of raising each other. I returned home knowing the future of Malawi was resting on the shoulders of these orphaned children, and I had to act. "So it is with tremendous joy that I return to Malawi to lay the first brick in the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls.

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner Bros.) A true highlight in digital restoration technology, Warner Bros. restoration of the 1939 classic is cause for celebration. The Technicolor of the late ‘30s looks as though it was shot yesterday, and is especially stunning on Blu-ray, which was produced by scanning each of the film’s original Technicolor camera negatives using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final “capture” master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film’s previous DVD release. Judy Garland’s Dorothy is charming as ever, and the entire cast: Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch, are all stellar. Four disc set bonuses include: Sing-along track; Documentaries and featurettes; Two 1914 silent films produced by Oz author L. Frank Baum, based on his stories...

Madonna Gives $3 Million to Malawi Orphans
Pop superstar Madonna has donated at least $3 million to help orphans in Malawi. The "Hung Up" singer hopes her joint venture with economic guru Jeffrey Sachs will help feed up to 1,000 children every day. She tells Time magazine the project is "a privilege... the ultimate gift of being famous, or a byproduct... I know that, yeah, this is why I am famous." And Madonna insists having her own children - Lourdes, nine, and Rocco, five - has changed her "perspective on life" and she is fully committed to doing all she can to help underprivileged youngsters.
