Sylvester Stallone made his scripted TV debut with Taylor Sheridan’s comedy and crime drama Tulsa King. The show, premiering in 2022, the show recently returned with Season 2 and continues the story of Dwight ‘The General’ Manfredi’s story. While Tulsa King might seem like it’s based on real events, that’s not entirely the case.

Sheridan’s drama follows a New York mafia capo, released from prison after 25 years, who is sent to build a new criminal empire in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Though not directly based on a true story, it appears closely inspired on one of the bloodiest periods in Sicilian mafia history with Dwight’s exile to Tulsa and his pursuit of a new criminal empire closely sharing some similarities with the Inzerillo crime family.

Chicago – There are few character actors in the history of cinema more mesmerizing and fearless than Philip Seymour Hoffman. He’s created some of the most memorable characters ever to grace the screen: from the sexually arrested Allen in “Happiness” and the obsessed playwright Caden Cotard in “Synecdoche, New York” to the electrifying title role in “Capote.”
His brilliant acting career obviously caused the excitement surrounding his feature filmmaking debut to be more than mildly palpable. Yet “Jack Goes Boating” is an unexpectedly benign morsel, with bittersweet tones reminiscent of Jeff Garlin’s equally “Marty”-like, “I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With.” Hoffman’s sweet, shy, schlubby-looking protagonist sports a nearly childlike naïveté that’s as lovable as it is disconcerting.
DVD Rating: 3.0/5.0
Based on Bob Glaudini’s play of the same name, the film centers on the hesitant romance that begins to blossom between two lost souls in New York City.

Jack Goes Boating humbly affirms itself as a lightweight tale of romance – one of two oddball peas in a pod that lack greatness and fascination. Inspired by the musings of his new girlfriend Connie (Amy Ryan), Jack (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) decides to learn how to swim so that in the summer he can take her for a boat ride in Central Park. He is obsessed with anything he puts his mind to, in contrast to the emptiness of his life. As a New York Limo driver, he loves positivity, Reggae and his only friendship is with Clyde (John Ortiz), whose relationship with his wife Lucy (Daphne Ruban-Vega) is slowly falling apart.
Directed by Phillip Seymour Hoffman and scripted by Bob Glaudini (based on his off-Broadway play), Jack Goes Boating is often aimless and unhurried. The film fails its plot, never quite fleshing out the blossoming romance of Jack and Connie.
