For the past 17 years, painter and graphic artist Jorgo Schaefer from Wuppertal, Germany has been an artist-in-residence at the New York Vision Festival, one of the world’s premier festival’s of avant-garde jazz, dance, poetry, film and visual art.
Steve Dalachinsky Can you explain a bit about your process and becoming an artist?
Jorgo Schaefer: My career as a professional artist started in 1970 at the Werkkunstschule (Wks, School of Applied Arts) in Wuppertal. At this time, the Wks was a highly regarded institution with a long tradition. It was not an art academy but arts were a key element. Artistic skills were taught as well as philosophy. Our freshman class consisted of 15 students and we were hanging out together day and night, influenced and inspired by the political and artistic movements of about 4 good years. Plus: Amsterdam was just around the corner...
Sd: When did you get interested in jazz and improvisation?...

Jamelia has called for the BBC to sack Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson.
The singer-turned-presenter told the audience at ITV's Loose Women today (May 2) that she believes the corporation should "exercise zero tolerance" towards the 54-year-old, after footage emerged allegedly showing him uttering a racist term.
Jeremy Clarkson poll: Should he be fired by the BBC?
"He is very aware of the deep-rooted negative connotations associated with that word and whether you mumble it, whether you say it, it is not on," she explained.
"It is not acceptable and it is deeply offensive to too many people. He has got to go."
The 'Superstar' singer added: "He is in a position of power and influence and there are so many people of many different races who watch his shows and that should not be in your vocabulary, it should not be in your head."
The 33-year-old also told the rest...

Children in Need has launched a 'Bearfaced' campaign as part of this year's appeal.
A host of female celebrities - including Alex Jones, Sheridan Smith and Jo Wood - will spend a day without their makeup to help raise money for the BBC fundraiser on November 8.
Former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips will also take part in the campaign, which asks women to go makeup-free for the day and pop on a Post Office Pawprint instead.
"Pop a Pudsey Pawprint on instead of your makeup on Friday, November 8 to help make a difference to young lives across the UK; every penny raised really will help!" Sheridan Smith said.
The One Show's Jones added: "There are so many children and young people across the UK who need our help, so how could I say no to the BBC Children in Need Bearfaced campaign? Join me and hundreds of other women going Bearfaced November 8th.

She also confessed that she wouldn't go see the band in concert today.
"I don't think I'd go and see a show again because I've been there, I've done that and I've seen thousands of shows and I've seen them at their best," she said. "I think for me to...
