UK actor and filmmaker Idris Elba has outlined his ambitions for building a bolstered film infrastructure in Africa, telling an audience at SXSW London on June 4, “I want to build the African Odeon”.

Elba noted the low number of cinemas across the continent, during a discussion on creativity as capital for change. “I would love to be able to tackle some of that, because I believe the cinema experience that we have all gone through should be experienced by a new generation, I don’t think it should all be on a phone.

“How do I do that? Building a...

Lucy Hale's New Horror Movie Sounds Way Too Similar To This 85% Rt Sci-Fi Classic
Image
Lucy Hale has a new horror project coming up, but it sounds suspiciously similar to a sci-fi classic with 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. Lucy Hales acting career began in 2003 when she was a contestant in American Juniors, but she rose to fame seven years later when she was cast as Aria Montgomery in Pretty Little Liars. Hale made her big screen debut in 2008 when she played Effie Kaligaris, Lenas younger sister, in the comedy-drama The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. Since then, Hale has been part of various projects on TV and film in different genres.

Lucy Hale first visited the horror genre in 2009 in Michael Storeys Fear Island, which was released direct-to-video. Her first theatrically released horror movie was Scream 4, in 2011, in which she has a cameo appearance in the movie-within-a-movie-within-a-movie in the opening scene. Hale later starred in 2018s Truth or Dare, followed by Fantasy Island in...

Almost five years have gone by since it was announced that Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures were working on a new version of The Thing called Frozen Hell – and while that project still hasn’t made its way into production, Deadline reports that a sci-fi thriller called White Mars, which sounds quite similar to The Thing and is set to star Lucy Hale of Pretty Little Liars, Scream 4, Truth or Dare?, and Fantasy Island, will begin filming on November 11th. Lucy Hale to star in Antarctica-set sci-fi thriller film White Mars
Image
Lucy Hale will brave the frigid temperatures for her upcoming science fiction thriller film White Mars, which sounds a little bit like a modern take on The Thing.

According to Deadline, the actress has been cast as microbiologist Sammie, who has been assigned to an isolated research facility in Antarctica. Sammie soon finds herself fighting for survival when something evil infiltrates the compound with a single goal in mind: extinguish everyone inside of it.

Perhaps the most intriguing thing about White Mars is that it will be filmed entirely inside a virtual production studio by the entertainment company Singularity, which specializes in this kind of groundbreaking filmmaking technology that utilizes a mixture of augmented reality, CGI, and other cutting-edge tech to create immersive and realistic environments. Netflix used a virtual production studio to film the German mystery series 1899.

The film will be directed by Martin Owen, who also directs Above the Below with Idris Elba,...

Idris Elba Teases His New Astronaut Survival Thriller 'Above the Below'
Image
Following his feature directorial debut Yardie in 2018, Idris Elba will soon premiere his latest turn behind the camera, Above the Below. Announced late last year, the Lionsgate survival thriller pairs up the Emmy nominee with co-director Martin Owen to tell the story of three unfortunate astronauts who survive a disastrous re-entry to Earth only to find themselves in a much more dire scenario. Adding to the intrigue is a star-studded cast and crew with Caitlin FitzGerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin co-starring opposite Elba and the trio of Elizabeth Morris, Matt Mitchell, and Vicki Sargent on board as screenwriters. Ahead of Elba's voice role in the Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off series Knuckles later this month, Collider's Steve Weintraub spoke with him about what to expect from the film and how it slots into his increasingly crowded slate.

‘L.A. Slasher’ Celebrates Tabloid Culture on Screambox [Trailer]
L.A. Slasher (2015)
A cultural crusader strikes in L.A. Slasher, now streaming on Screambox.

Directed by Martin Owen and produced by Jeffrey Wright and Daniel Sollinger, the black comedy stars Mischa Barton (“The O.C.”), Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight), Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Danny Trejo (Machete), and comedian Andy Dick as the voice of the killer.

L.A. Slasher is “a biting, social satire about reality TV and the glorification of people who are famous for simply being famous.”

The film also “explores why it has become acceptable and even admirable for people to become influential and wealthy based on no merit or talent – purely through notoriety achieved through shameful behavior.

“Incensed by the tabloid culture which celebrates it, the L.A. Slasher publicly abducts a series of reality TV stars, while the media and general public in turn begin to question if society is better off without them.”

Here’s the trailer.

Idris Elba at an event for Les Misérables (2012)
Idris Elba to co-direct and star in Above And Below
Idris Elba at an event for Les Misérables (2012)
The survival thriller Above And Below is already shooting, and marks Idris Elba’s second outing as a director following 2018’s Yardie.

Idris Elba is clearly a man of many talents: acting, DJing, somehow always being incredibly stylish even if he was to wear a binbag. He’s also got one film under his belt as a director, 2018’s Yardie, a crime drama that five years on, remains a confident and well-told film that clearly showcases Elba’s potential as a filmmaker, should it be a route he chooses to develop.

That looks like it could be happening soon, given that he’s reportedly (according to Movieweb) signed on to co-direct Above And Below, a survival thriller that sees a trio of astronauts’ re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere go badly wrong. The film is said to be already shooting at Pinewood, although we don’t yet have any news regarding the film’s release schedule.

Idris Elba Set to Direct & Star in New Survival Thriller Above the Below
Image
Idris Elba is set to co-direct and star in the survival thriller film "Above the Below," alongside Caitlin FitzGerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin. The film follows a trio of astronauts who survive a chaotic re-entry to Earth but find themselves off course and cut off from the world. "Above the Below" is Elba's second time directing, following his feature film debut with "Yardie" in 2018, and filming has already begun for the new movie at Pinewood Studios in England.

Idris Elba has been a busy man as of late, starring in the Apple TV+ series, Hijack, in addition to having roles in the upcoming Paramount Plus animated series, Knuckles, and the 2024 film, Sonic the Hedgehog 3. He can now cross off 'direct a movie' from his to-do list, as the 51-year-old English actor is now set to co-direct and star in the upcoming survival thriller Above the Below from Lionsgate.

Above the Below: Idris Elba starring in and co-directing survival thriller
Image
Actor Idris Elba made his feature directorial debut with the 2018 crime drama Yardie, and earlier this year we heard that he would be following that up with an action thriller called Infernus. That movie was supposed to get started filming in October, but appears to have been disrupted by the strikes. So while we wait to hear what’s going to happen with Infernus, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Elba is teaming up with Martin Owen (The Loneliest Boy in the World) to co-direct a survival thriller called Above the Below… and this one is already in production!

Above the Below started filming last week at Pinewood Studios, using two separate stages – including the studio’s underwater stage. In addition to co-directing, Elba also stars in the movie alongside Caitlin FitzGerald (Masters of Sex) and Hero Fiennes Tiffin (the After franchise).

Owen came up with the initial idea for the film,...

“Bros” (Universal Pictures Home Entertainment): The comedy that carried the weight of so many competing expectations that it’s a miracle it exists at all, “Bros” is the queer zeitgeist moment that gave away a few too many gay secrets to the straight audiences who saw it, but for better or worse, those secrets were delightfully funny. Co-writer Billy Eichner stars as a gay man indifferent to love but still open to possibilities when a traditional handsome jock (Luke Macfarlane) enters the picture. It turns out both of them have been traumatized by the homophobic world around them, but they figure it out in “When Harry Met Sally…” style by the end. That’s not a spoiler; all rom-coms end that way.

One thing is for sure, you won’t have seen many films like The Loneliest Boy in the World recently. This visual spectacle, a fairytale-zombie tale is out now in US theatres and on digital as of October 18 – and to mark the occasion we had the pleasure in speaking to leading stars, and rising stars at that, Max Harwood and Hero Fiennes Tiffin.

We spoke about working with director Martin Owen and his unique visual style as a storyteller, while they touched on the themes of the movie, and why we just can’t get enough of zombies. We spoke about shooting some of the more comedically inclined scenes, discussed the whirlwind couple of years Harwood has had, and finally, we spoke to Tiffin about his role in the brilliant, epic production The Woman King, which is also out now.

Max Harwood, Ashley Benson, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin in The Loneliest Boy in the World (2022)
‘The Loneliest Boy in the World’ Review: Brainless Zombie Comedy Features Too Many Elbows to the Ribs
Max Harwood, Ashley Benson, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin in The Loneliest Boy in the World (2022)
The tedious zombie comedy “The Loneliest Boy in the World” joins a number of recent faux-retro satires that — like “Psycho Goreman” (2020), “Turbo Kid” (2015), and “Kung Fury” (2015) before it — re-present pop culture artifacts from the 1980s as knowingly kitschy comfort food.

In “The Loneliest Boy in the World,” an emotionally disturbed orphan digs up and befriends a quartet of mysteriously re-animated corpses, who then inexplicably act like his surrogate family members. The kid, Oliver, has no friends and no social intelligence, because he’s addicted to TV. Oliver also lives alone in a pink house whose interior design seems to have been partly inspired by Barbie’s Dreamhouse playset.

Unfortunately, director Martin Owen (“The Intergalactic Adventures of Max Cloud”) and screenwriter Piers Ashworth (co-writer of “Blithe Spirit”) don’t challenge or really highlight anything funny about Oliver’s delusional, media-poisoned nostalgia. The gags in “The Loneliest Boy in the World” also...

Max Harwood + Zombies in 'The Loneliest Boy in the World' Trailer
Image
"Oliver is about to discover that family never dies…" Well Go USA has revealed a trailer for a strange indie comedy from the UK titled The Loneliest Boy in the World, from filmmaker Martin Owen. It's set to debut on VOD later in October, and hasn't stopped by any festivals that we're aware of. Looks like a kooky zombie comedy kind of like this one Fido from 2006. The Loneliest Boy in the World is a modern fairytale - with zombies. A satire and a celebration of family values, of the imagery of horror films, of suburban life, of the American Dream and of the ultimate taboo; death. The concept involves a world of zombies interacting with him in a series of quirky misadventures. The film stars Max Harwood, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Susan Wokoma, Evan Ross, Ben Miller, Ashley Benson, and Jacob Sartorious. This actually looks like a rather nice, charming...
