Casting director Alan Scott Neal makes his feature-length debut with “Last Straw (2024),” a chilling slasher that is too high on its own supply. So much so that despite clear signs of brilliance simmering down the surface, you get a distant, often flat-out uninteresting genre exercise that doesn’t know what to do with its gore-filled premise. The result is a disappointing thriller that is too eager to please but never knows what buttons to push and when to move them.

The story follows Nancy (Jessica Belkin), a young, pretty girl who finds out that she is pregnant. From the offset, we are introduced to her as someone who doesn’t care what her life is all about or what she is going to do with the baby that is now growing in her belly. She casually talks about the pregnancy to her best friend Tabitha (Tara Raani), discussing who could possibly be the father.

The diner in Hollywood movies has been repeatedly used in a number of ways, although the truth is that, usually, some sort of crime is associated with the particular setting. Alan Scott Neal tries his hand with a crime horror/thriller in “Last Straw”, a film that premiered in Sitges before screening in a number of genre festivals.

Nancy Osborne is a girl in trouble. She is pregnant, although she is not sure who is the father, while her father, completely ignorant of the fact, pressures her to be more responsible now that she has made her manager in the diner he runs. The first half of this 80-minute roadside diner siege horror plays out almost like a section of an anthology film, calling to mind the nasty little slasher The Gas Station in John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper’s Body Bags project. Snowfall director Damian Marcano wanted to show another side of strippers-turned-assassins Black Diamond and Dallas, so he explored them through motherhood.

The end result was an awkward-but-comical interaction in last week’s Episode 3 between the pair and Louie and Jerome, as Black Diamond and Dallas dropped off their children at elementary school. Louie told the women, who now work for Franklin, she would and could forgive them for nearly killing her if they used their exotic dancer connections to plant seeds of usurpation in Mello’s head.

The fastest way to separate die-hard Snowfall fans from trendy ones is dropping White Rob’s name.

Played by actor Taylor Kowalski, White Rob is an old friend of Franklin’s from high school, a member of his O.G. crew and the one who introduced him to his first plug, Avi. Those who know me personally within certain circles know that I have something of a distaste for a lot of the underground horror films released over the past couple of years. Especially when it comes to “extreme” underground horror. If I had a penny for the amount of times I have been coaxed in to watching an effort that’s been hyped or included in one one of those tedious “Most Extreme Horror Films!” slideshow videos on Youtube (You’re always going to get a lot of views doing one of those lists by the way!), only to be completely disappointed and bored out of my skull, I’d have...

There are great dangers in being an actor. The cutthroat competition, the grueling days on set… and the obsessed serial killers. Well, that serial killer thing isn't the norm, but it's front and center in Pieces of Talent.

Now available to stream, as well as on DVD and in old school VHS format, Pieces of Talent was co-written and directed by Joe Stauffer. It stars co-writer David Long. He is joined in the cast by Kristi Ray, Jon Stafford (Full Metal Jacket), Barbara Weetman (Stuck in Love) and Taylor Kowalski (Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever).

The gruesome F/X were done by Tony Rosen, who created the Annabelle doll for The Conjuring and its upcoming spinoff.

I know very little about this film, mostly on purpose. I have heard Piece of Talent being mentioned by several friends, and on various Facebook groups that focus on solid indie horror, so it was already on my radar, but I have no idea what it is all about. A press release went out today, announcing that the film was now available on DVD & VHS through the Pieces of Talent website. I’m always excited to check out new indie horror films, even though the typical indie horror output as of late has been a little bit disappointing. However, there are definitely still a few gems that slip through the cracks, and this is shaping up to be one of them, in my eyes. Check out the press release below, and order your copy today.

A new horror and thriller film came to my attention on YouTube when I logged in and saw that Appsro Animation had uploaded a new Renegade Awesome video entitled Pieces of Talent. The animated short is pushing the Shutter Blade Media film, as the film's creator is a fan of the work of the animation studio.

It was directed by Joe Stauffer, and written by Joe Stauffer and David Long. It stars Shane Callahan (Vampire Diaries), Taylor Kowalski (Homeland), Barbara Weetman (One Tree Hill), Kristi Ray (Children of Wax) and David Long. Most of the movie was filmed right here in my own state of North Carolina, and one of the stars of the film, Kristi Ray is also from New Bern, Nc.

A Homeland TV Show Clip has been released. Claire Danes, Mandy Patinkin, and Damian Lewis star in the 2011 Showtime TV show series. Homeland‘s plot synopsis: The show “centers on Marine Sergeant Scott Brody (Damian Lewis), who returns home eight years after going missing in Iraq, and Carrie Anderson (Claire Danes), a driven CIA officer who suspects he might be plotting an attack on America.”
