Rush frontman-bassist Geddy Lee, Simple Minds lead singer Jim Kerr and Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley appear in a new documentary about the origins and high points of pioneering Toronto radio station Cfny.

Veteran film producer Matt Schichter makes his directorial debut with Cfny: The Spirit of Radio, which has just wrapped post production. Other artists appearing in the doc include Steven Page (Barenaked Ladies), Peter Hook (New Order/Joy Division), Lol Tolhurst (The Cure), Emily Haines (Metric), Ben Kowalewicz (Billy Talent) and Andy McCluskey (Omd).

During the 1970s and 1980s, major record companies and large independent labels relied on records being played on local radio in major markets to promote commercial releases. Toronto’s Cfny, which launched in a small city suburb in 1960, eventually became hugely influential in breaking punk and new wave acts after evolving into an alternative radio station on the FM dial.

Tony Pigg, the popular DJ and on-air personality at Wplj-fm and two other New York rock radio stations for more than three decades, has died. He was 85.

Pigg died Friday of natural causes at his home in New York City, his wife of 37 years, Lucinda Scala Quinn, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Pigg also served as the staff announcer of the New York-based live morning show co-hosted by Regis Philbin and, after his retirement, Kelly Ripa. Pigg held that job for 30-plus years through 2019.

Richard Quinn was born in Sacramento on April 11, 1939. He studied art with painter Wayne Thiebaud at Sacramento State and served with the U.S. Army before beginning his radio career at an Am station in Winslow, Arizona, and then at Kroy-am in his hometown.

Here’s a very straightforward music documentary about Simple Minds – the story of five working-class lads from Glasgow who started a band in 1977, and by the mid-80s were stadium rockers up there with U2. “The most iconic and influential Scottish band in history,” is how the film’s promotional material describes them. Today, only frontman Jim Kerr and guitarist Charlie Burchill remain of the original lineup – and miraculously they’re still mates. And when Kerr says sweetly that their friendship is one of his greatest achievements, it looks like he really means it.

They started the band in the punk era, then switched to art rock. With his black eyeliner and creepy monk’s fringe, Kerr looked the part of charismatic frontman.

Ezra Knight has been reelected president of SAG-AFTRA’s New York Local in a landslide victory that also gave his running mates a clean sweep of the election. Knight received nearly 73% of the votes cast in a four-person race for president. His four vice presidential running mates – Linda Powell, Anthony Rapp, Jim Kerr and Liz Zazzi – were also elected.

Knight is the leader of the local’s ruling Usan party that endorsed the unity slate led by SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher and Secretary-Treasurer Joely Fisher, who also won landslide victories last night.

Knight was also the top vote-getter in the NY local’s national board races, and here too his Usan running mates won every race, including Avis Boone, Christine Bruno, Samantha Mathis, Michael Gaston, Phoebe Jonas, Samantha Macivor and Jim Kerr.

Usan was formed by New York members of SAG and AFTRA who were dedicated to the merger and to “Uniting Screen Actors Nationwide.

David Beckham’s Studio 99 is producing a series on the rise of football’s Premier League billionaires for Paramount+ as the streamer unveils a five-strong UK factual slate that includes shows on luxury yachts, the Loch Ness monster, Simple Minds and strippers in Vegas.

The Premiership: Rise of the Billionaires (working title) is being co-produced by All3Media-backed The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe producer Story Films and will tell the coming-of-age story of one of the world’s most expensive and lucrative sporting leagues, placing its stars center stage. The four-parter will focus on the 2000-2010 era, when the likes of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who was recently forced to sell Chelsea, took the league by storm, transforming its wealth.

Scott Shannon is the King Kong of rock and roll radio. The new feature-length documentary Worst to First: The True Story of Z100 New York describes how he arrived in New York to save a bottom-place radio station, and turned it into a major media force.

“Coming to you live from the top of the Empire State Building,” like every other New York station sharing the city’s antenna, Z100 was one of the eight wonders of the radio world. The DJs broadcast from the swamps of New Jersey, when the Meadowlands might as well have been Skull Island, on-air talent had to buy their own records, and the station wasn’t on rotation when musicians came to town to promote shows. Shannon and his fellow radio personalities turned it into a first-stop music shop.

Thanks to everyone who chose to Be the Light at HeartShare’s 2021 Virtual Gala, HeartShare is thrilled to announce that it reached its event fundraising goal of $1M.

The Gala, which took place on April 15th, is HeartShare’s largest annual fundraising event and the $1M raised will go a long way toward supporting an annual budget that depends, in part, on contributions and donations raised from special events.

The funds will help cover unexpected and unbudgeted costs incurred due to Covid-19 and reduced government funding. Ultimately, the funds will be applied to the programs and services HeartShare provides to help people with autism and other developmental disabilities live their best lives: group homes, pre-schools, schools for children and teens with autism, day habilitation programs, vocational training programs and our recreational, family support and long-term therapy services.

“The HeartShare family is incredibly loyal and supportive,” says HeartShare President and CEO William R. Guarinello.

Organizers of Geena Davis’ Bentonville Film Festival, which champions inclusion in all forms of media, will be produced as an annual program by the nascent Arkansas nonprofit BFFoundation. Independent film producer Kristin Mann is set as head of content.

Michelle Hurd, currently serving on the national board, will be running for president of the Los Angeles local; Clyde Kusatsu and Ellen Crawford will be running for vice president slots. Kusatsu is currently the national vice president from La, and Crawford is a national board member. As previously reported, Camryn Manheim will be running for national secretary-treasurer as president Gabrielle Carteris’ running mate.

Two candidates are challenging Carteris for president: Jane Austin, currently the guild’s national secretary-treasurer who’s running for president as an independent, and Matthew Modine, who is running at the top of the ticket for Membership First. His slate has yet to be announced.

In New York, Rebecca Damon, national executive vice president and New York president, is running for re-election as New York president.

Dad had been quite a wealthy guy but he was also a compulsive gambler. By the time I came along he had hit hard times. His profession was not an honourable one – he was involved in criminal activities. But he was my dad, flawed as he was, and I loved him. My mum worked as a secretary for Christian Dior. She looked like a movie star.

We lived in Hounslow in two rooms with an outside toilet. I worshipped my brother Jamie when we were growing up, but we had different childhoods because I was acting from the age of four and Jamie wasn't interested in that, but we're still very close.

Mum never let me do interviews with the newspapers – mainly because if people found out about Dad's criminal ways it could have seriously harmed what was turning out to be an amazing career.

The Lethal Weapon 2 star was wed to Gallagher, her third husband, from 1997 until 2000 and they share a son, Lennon. Kensit is also mum to James, 18, her child from her second marriage to rocker Jim Kerr.

The blonde beauty admits she stayed close to her ex-partners' mothers and they've dished out invaluable advice on how to raise her kids.

She tells Britain's Celebs on Sunday, "Jim's mother Irene, who died last December, brought three boys up in Scotland. She and Liam's mum Peggy have become role models for me. They are strong women who brought up these boys.

"I have such admiration for them. Motherhood and career is what it's about."

But Kensit admits not having her own mother around has been hard - Margaret lost her battle with breast cancer in the early 1990s before her grandsons were born.

The star adds, "My parents died before the boys were born and my one big sadness is they never had mum as their grandmother."...

The British actress is spearheading the Parents for Playgrounds drive, which will hand out $22,500 (£15,000) grants for play spaces in desperate need of renovation.

She tells U.K. TV show Daybreak, "We're asking parents up and down the country to nominate playgrounds in their area that they feel could be in need of repair, improvement.

"We're going to choose five play areas and a £15,000 bursary is going to be used to renovate these areas, which is incredible in a time when we're having so much taken away from us. It's so generous and it's a social mission. I've got two boys, 18 and 11, and this campaign is aimed at primary school children to the age of 11, so I've kind of lived it, I know what it's like.

"I had my first son James when I was very young, none of my girlfriends had children. I relied heavily on going to the playground, meeting other kids, other mums I could talk to there.

"(Playgrounds are) something that I fear could disappear with computer screens, every weekend there's a great new Pixar movie coming out. (But) it's so important that we do get out, have fresh air and have those memories."...

The Lethal Weapon 2 star was set to lift the lid on her marriages to rockers Liam Gallagher, Jim Kerr and Dan Donovan in the book, but the release was mysteriously cancelled.

Kensit has now revealed she scrapped the project because of her latest love split with fourth husband, DJ Jeremy Healy, who she married last year.

She says, "I was writing it, but I'm not now. I gave the money back and decided it was not appropriate after this year."

And Kensit also admits she pulled out for the sake of her kids, adding: "There are some things that you just don't need to talk about. And I have to think of my children."

Kensit has a 17-year-old son, James, with Kerr, and Lennon, 11, with Gallagher.

The post-screening panel will be moderated by “Clerks” and “Cop Out” filmmaker Kevin Smith, who was on the nationally syndicated “Opie and Anthony” radio program this morning to discuss the appearance.

Smith, a born conversationalist, lamented the fact that he’ll only have 45 minutes with this cast, when he said he could easily do an hour with each member of the “Club.” Anyone who has attended one of Smith’s entertaining live shows knows that’s no exaggeration.
