Rush frontman-bassist Geddy Lee, Simple Minds lead singer Jim Kerr and Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley appear in a new documentary about the origins and high points of pioneering Toronto radio station Cfny.
Veteran film producer Matt Schichter makes his directorial debut with Cfny: The Spirit of Radio, which has just wrapped post production. Other artists appearing in the doc include Steven Page (Barenaked Ladies), Peter Hook (New Order/Joy Division), Lol Tolhurst (The Cure), Emily Haines (Metric), Ben Kowalewicz (Billy Talent) and Andy McCluskey (Omd).
During the 1970s and 1980s, major record companies and large independent labels relied on records being played on local radio in major markets to promote commercial releases. Toronto’s Cfny, which launched in a small city suburb in 1960, eventually became hugely influential in breaking punk and new wave acts after evolving into an alternative radio station on the FM dial.

Tony Pigg, the popular DJ and on-air personality at Wplj-fm and two other New York rock radio stations for more than three decades, has died. He was 85.
Pigg died Friday of natural causes at his home in New York City, his wife of 37 years, Lucinda Scala Quinn, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Pigg also served as the staff announcer of the New York-based live morning show co-hosted by Regis Philbin and, after his retirement, Kelly Ripa. Pigg held that job for 30-plus years through 2019.
Richard Quinn was born in Sacramento on April 11, 1939. He studied art with painter Wayne Thiebaud at Sacramento State and served with the U.S. Army before beginning his radio career at an Am station in Winslow, Arizona, and then at Kroy-am in his hometown.

From their punk origins to their stadium-level success in the Live Aid and Breakfast Club era, this music doc finds the Glasgow band still sweetly and likably down to earth
Here’s a very straightforward music documentary about Simple Minds – the story of five working-class lads from Glasgow who started a band in 1977, and by the mid-80s were stadium rockers up there with U2. “The most iconic and influential Scottish band in history,” is how the film’s promotional material describes them. Today, only frontman Jim Kerr and guitarist Charlie Burchill remain of the original lineup – and miraculously they’re still mates. And when Kerr says sweetly that their friendship is one of his greatest achievements, it looks like he really means it.
They started the band in the punk era, then switched to art rock. With his black eyeliner and creepy monk’s fringe, Kerr looked the part of charismatic frontman.

The director’s movies provided an intense emotive soundtrack to teenagers’ lives. A new box set collects tracks from his best-loved films, by artists such as Simple Minds, the Smiths and Omd
It was clear just how important music was to John Hughes’s cinematic vision of teenage life when The Breakfast Club, his high-school detention drama, was released in 1985. As the film ended with its five principals – “a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal” – having reached mutual understanding, the voice of Simple Minds’ Jim Kerr crooned: “Won’t you come see about me?”
The writers of Don’t You (Forget About Me), Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff, were trying to emulate the rhythm of Our Lips Are Sealed, by the Go-Go’s, and the song was inspired by a conversation in the film between Anthony Michael Hall (“brain”) and Judd Nelson (“criminal”). “When they were away from everybody else,...

Scott Shannon is the King Kong of rock and roll radio. The new feature-length documentary Worst to First: The True Story of Z100 New York describes how he arrived in New York to save a bottom-place radio station, and turned it into a major media force.
“Coming to you live from the top of the Empire State Building,” like every other New York station sharing the city’s antenna, Z100 was one of the eight wonders of the radio world. The DJs broadcast from the swamps of New Jersey, when the Meadowlands might as well have been Skull Island, on-air talent had to buy their own records, and the station wasn’t on rotation when musicians came to town to promote shows. Shannon and his fellow radio personalities turned it into a first-stop music shop.
Jon Bon Jovi, Joan Jett, and Nile Rodgers, who are interviewed in the documentary, broke through because of Z100 airplay.

Thanks to everyone who chose to Be the Light at HeartShare’s 2021 Virtual Gala, HeartShare is thrilled to announce that it reached its event fundraising goal of $1M.
The Gala, which took place on April 15th, is HeartShare’s largest annual fundraising event and the $1M raised will go a long way toward supporting an annual budget that depends, in part, on contributions and donations raised from special events.
The funds will help cover unexpected and unbudgeted costs incurred due to Covid-19 and reduced government funding. Ultimately, the funds will be applied to the programs and services HeartShare provides to help people with autism and other developmental disabilities live their best lives: group homes, pre-schools, schools for children and teens with autism, day habilitation programs, vocational training programs and our recreational, family support and long-term therapy services.
“The HeartShare family is incredibly loyal and supportive,” says HeartShare President and CEO William R. Guarinello.

Los Angeles, Oct 19: Actress Patsy Kensit has been married four times. But she says only two of her marriages, of which she has two sons, are the ones closest to her heart.
"My marriages to the fathers of my two sons are the only ones that count and they've been the defining relationships in my life," Sunday Telegraph quoted Kensit as saying.
"With the utmost respect to my first and my fourth husbands, I don't consider either of those relationships to be proper marriages," she added.
One of the marriages that counts for her is the one with Jim Kerr, lead singer of Scottish rock band Simple Minds. She had a son James,.

While the British teen market singlehandedly keeps Neighbours on the map long after many of its homegrown viewers abandoned the Aussie soap, it seems that this trade in entertainment culture is not all one-way.
The Independent reports that British music – by which, inevitably, I mean pop and sort-of rock – is doing so well Down Under that the British Phonographic Industry is organising a trade mission to those shores, banking on the fact that the 22% of the Australian music currently belonging to UK artists can be exploited and increased. Adele is one of the British artists to enjoy equal success in Australia
So why is British music doing so well in this far-off land? As of recent times, a lot of credit must go to those two pop bookends Adele and One Direction, with Adele’s 21 album going 13-times platinum in Australia, and the cherubic quintet stopping traffic...

The actor talks about her family
Dad had been quite a wealthy guy but he was also a compulsive gambler. By the time I came along he had hit hard times. His profession was not an honourable one – he was involved in criminal activities. But he was my dad, flawed as he was, and I loved him. My mum worked as a secretary for Christian Dior. She looked like a movie star.
We lived in Hounslow in two rooms with an outside toilet. I worshipped my brother Jamie when we were growing up, but we had different childhoods because I was acting from the age of four and Jamie wasn't interested in that, but we're still very close.
Mum never let me do interviews with the newspapers – mainly because if people found out about Dad's criminal ways it could have seriously harmed what was turning out to be an amazing career.

Kensit Relies On Gallagher's Mum For Parenting Tips
British actress Patsy Kensit looks to ex-husband Liam Gallagher's mum for tips about parenthood after her own mother passed away when she was 22.
The Lethal Weapon 2 star was wed to Gallagher, her third husband, from 1997 until 2000 and they share a son, Lennon. Kensit is also mum to James, 18, her child from her second marriage to rocker Jim Kerr.
The blonde beauty admits she stayed close to her ex-partners' mothers and they've dished out invaluable advice on how to raise her kids.
She tells Britain's Celebs on Sunday, "Jim's mother Irene, who died last December, brought three boys up in Scotland. She and Liam's mum Peggy have become role models for me. They are strong women who brought up these boys.
"I have such admiration for them. Motherhood and career is what it's about."
But Kensit admits not having her own mother around has been hard - Margaret lost her battle with breast cancer in the early 1990s before her grandsons were born.
The star adds, "My parents died before the boys were born and my one big sadness is they never had mum as their grandmother."...

Kensit Leads Campaign For U.K. Playgrounds
Lethal Weapon 2 star Patsy Kensit is on a mission to restore Britain's abandoned playgrounds.
The British actress is spearheading the Parents for Playgrounds drive, which will hand out $22,500 (£15,000) grants for play spaces in desperate need of renovation.
And Kensit, who has a son James with Simple Minds rocker Jim Kerr and a little boy, Lennon, with Liam Gallagher, is passionate about the campaign - because she depended on her local park and the mums she met there when raising her kids.
She tells U.K. TV show Daybreak, "We're asking parents up and down the country to nominate playgrounds in their area that they feel could be in need of repair, improvement.
"We're going to choose five play areas and a £15,000 bursary is going to be used to renovate these areas, which is incredible in a time when we're having so much taken away from us. It's so generous and it's a social mission. I've got two boys, 18 and 11, and this campaign is aimed at primary school children to the age of 11, so I've kind of lived it, I know what it's like.
"I had my first son James when I was very young, none of my girlfriends had children. I relied heavily on going to the playground, meeting other kids, other mums I could talk to there.
"(Playgrounds are) something that I fear could disappear with computer screens, every weekend there's a great new Pixar movie coming out. (But) it's so important that we do get out, have fresh air and have those memories."...

Actress Patsy Kensit has been voted off "Strictly Come Dancing", just days after crediting the British reality show with helping to heal the heartache of her fourth marriage breakdown. The "Lethal Weapon 2" star admitted earlier this week she was convinced the intense training for the series was what she needed to take her mind off her separation from DJ Jeremy Healy in April this year.
She revealed, "This whole Strictly experience has been such an amazing diversion from my life. I would advise anyone to try it. If you've had a rough time, go to a dance class because it does lift your spirits. It's turned out to be just what I needed."
But British viewers were unimpressed with Kensit's tango on Saturday night, November 27, and she was kicked off the show on Sunday, November 28. However the actress has vowed to carry on dancing, telling host Tess Daly, "I've had the most incredible time.

Actress Patsy Kensit has credited her turn on British reality show Strictly Come Dancing with helping to heal the heartache of her fourth marriage breakdown.
The Lethal Weapon 2 star split from her fourth husband, DJ Jeremy Healy, in April and has previously admitted the break-up hit her hard, revealing she ballooned in weight after gorging on junk food.
She accepted an offer to appear on the U.K. dancing show over the summer, and she's convinced the intense training is just what she needed to take her mind off her "rough" marriage separation.
Kensit tells Britain's Daily Mirror, "I was glad to be asked this year. This whole Strictly experience has been such an amazing diversion from my life. I would advise anyone to try it.
"If you've had a rough time, go to a dance class because it does lift your spirits. It's turned out to be just what I needed."
Kensit was previously wed to Big Audio Dynamite keyboardist Dan Donovan, Simple Minds singer Jim Kerr, and Oasis star Liam Gallagher.

Kensit Scrapped Book After Latest Love Split
British actress Patsy Kensit scrapped plans to release her tell-all autobiography because she didn't feel it was "appropriate" after her fourth marriage split earlier this year.
The Lethal Weapon 2 star was set to lift the lid on her marriages to rockers Liam Gallagher, Jim Kerr and Dan Donovan in the book, but the release was mysteriously cancelled.
Kensit has now revealed she scrapped the project because of her latest love split with fourth husband, DJ Jeremy Healy, who she married last year.
She says, "I was writing it, but I'm not now. I gave the money back and decided it was not appropriate after this year."
And Kensit also admits she pulled out for the sake of her kids, adding: "There are some things that you just don't need to talk about. And I have to think of my children."
Kensit has a 17-year-old son, James, with Kerr, and Lennon, 11, with Gallagher.

Kensit Binged On Doughnuts After Fourth Marriage Failed
Actress Patsy Kensit felt so depressed after the collapse of her fourth marriage she struggled to get out of bed - and ballooned in weight as she gorged on doughnuts.
The Lethal Weapon 2 star split from DJ Jeremy Healy in April and admits the break-up hit her hard.
She sometimes failed to shower or wash her hair and admits she looked like a "bag lady" - but pulled herself out of her gloom for the sake of her two sons.
Kensit tells Britain's Buzz magazine, "In the early days I didn't want to get out from under the duvet. Was I depressed? Oh God yes, absolutely. (My marriage) had failed and it wasn't even a year. But I couldn't hide under the covers for long because I had to show my kids that when something like this happens, you have to pick yourself up, dust yourself down, hold your head up and go.
"If I had gone under, what kind of mum would I be?... I was eating a box of doughnuts a day... Of course I blame myself for everything. I look back on all my marriages and think I should have done things differently."
Kensit was previously wed to Big Audio Dynamite frontman Dan Donovan, Simple Minds singer Jim Kerr and Oasis star Liam Gallagher.

Hollywoodnews.com: Crank up Simple Minds and get ready to describe the ruckus. Four members of John Hughes’ original “Breakfast Club” will take the stage tonight at the Paris Theatre in New York City for a 25tht Anniversary screening of the film, followed by a post-screening panel discussion.
Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy will attend the sold-out, commemorative event, presented by New Wave.
The post-screening panel will be moderated by “Clerks” and “Cop Out” filmmaker Kevin Smith, who was on the nationally syndicated “Opie and Anthony” radio program this morning to discuss the appearance.
Smith, a born conversationalist, lamented the fact that he’ll only have 45 minutes with this cast, when he said he could easily do an hour with each member of the “Club.” Anyone who has attended one of Smith’s entertaining live shows knows that’s no exaggeration.

British actress Patsy Kensit has ruled out marrying ever again following her split from her fourth husband. The "Lethal Weapon 2" star was plunged into a deep depression after separating from DJ Jeremy Healy in April, admitting she felt "foolish and ashamed" of the break-up.
And after four failed unions, Kensit has sworn off ever settling down again. She tells She magazine, "This year has been truly, truly awful. I lost my confidence and ballooned from eight stone to 11. But I'm looking forward now, with one million per cent conviction, that I definitely won't be getting married again."
"I also felt I'd put myself first before my kids and I didn't want that. It's embarrassing, humiliating, all those terrible emotions that make you want to run away and hide. I can't tell you how foolish and ashamed I feel."
