Exclusive: Nicolas Winding Refn, the provocateur filmmaker behind titles like Drive and Bronson, has added five to the cast of his new Neon flick, Her Private Hell: Dougray Scott (Irvine Welsh’s Crime), Diego Calva (Babylon), Aoi Yamada (Perfect Days), Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool & Wolverine), and Hidetoshi Nishijima (Drive My Car).

Plot and character details are being kept under wraps for the project, which marks Refn’s first for the big screen since The Neon Demon, starring Elle Fanning, in 2016. Sophie Thatcher, Charles Melton, Kristine Froseth, and Havana Rose Liu will lead the cast, as previously announced. Production is underway, with Neon repping worldwide rights and releasing the film in U.S. theaters, and Neon International handling foreign sales.

Written by Refn and Esti Giordani, Her Private Hell is directed and produced by Refn. Executive producers include Takuma Takasaki (Perfect Days), Kimberly Willming, Christina Erritzøe, and Lene Børglum, under the byNWR Originals banner.

Chanel celebrated the return of the hottest, most star-studded event of the Tribeca Festival Monday, June 9: Its 18th annual Tribeca Artists Dinner at The Odeon in New York City. The evening celebrates visual artists who have contributed original artwork to films at the festival, highlighting the intersection of creative fields — the fine arts and filmmaking — and the city’s innovation in cultural practices and happenings.

“We’re all working together and these are our collaborators, so it’s always great to support other filmmakers,” Sofia Coppola said on the red carpet. “These are all people that you get to know over the years. I have friends that are artists and, of course, as a visual medium, I think we respect each other. I’m always inspired by the work of visual artists and other mediums, and I always love meeting other creative people.”

According to Deadline, the company has now picked up the rights to the independently produced TV drama series Hal & Harper. The show comes from actor/filmmaker Cooper Raiff, whose resume includes Cha Cha Real Smooth. The business model for indie television is still testing the waters, but Mubi’s acquisition is a big win for the experimental process. The studio is set to stream the show in the U.S. and France, and it has earned good buzz after premiering at Sundance this year.

Exclusive: Mubi has acquired rights to Hal & Harper, the acclaimed indie TV series from actor-filmmaker Cooper Raiff (Cha Cha Real Smooth), for streaming in the U.S. and France, on the heels of its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The eight-episode family drama, co-starring Lili Reinhart and Mark Ruffalo, will premiere exclusively on the service this fall.

Lionsgate financed the series, handled the sale and distributes it worldwide.

This marks another win for independently produced television at a time when the business model is still being tested. Other recent examples of indie series that have gone on to significant streaming deals include Shane Gillis’ hit comedy Tires, which just returned for a second season, as well as Mark Duplass’ Penelope, both of which wound up at Netflix.

More notable names among this year’s jury include Jennifer Beals, Ilana Glazer, Sheila Nevins, Eliza Hittman, Annie Murphy, Kyle MacLachlan, Alex Karpovsky and Mickey Sumner.

The 2025 Tribeca Festival is bringing the best of the best together to select this year’s festival awards. IndieWire can announce that Nia DaCosta, Andrew Ahn, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Kyle MacLachlan, Eliza Hittman, and more acclaimed filmmakers will be among the jury members for festival, which will take place June 4 through 15.

The Tribeca Festival, presented by Okx, will honor works across 15 competition categories. In addition, the Nora Ephron Award will honor an exceptional female filmmaker who represents the spirit and vision of the legendary filmmaker and writer. The winners in each category will be announced at the Tribeca Festival ceremony on June 12.

Sam Raimi's upcoming horror film Send Help gets a major production update.

Per Upcoming Horror Movies, Send Help has officially entered the post-production phase. Co-producer Zainab Azizi also announced on Instagram that the film has wrapped filming, sharing a photo from the set. As of now, the survival-horror film is slated to arrive in theaters on Jan. 30, 2026, and will mark Raimi's first pure horror feature since the release of Drag Me to Hell back in 2009.

Some of us have been waiting for a very long time – 9 years to be exact – for news about a new Nicolas Winding Refn movie. The Danish director last graced the big screen with 2016’s deliciously deviant The Neon Demon before turning his gaze to the small screen, but Refn is now making what we hope will be a victorious return to the world of cinema.

Neon is co-financing and distributing the film and the studio took to Twitter/X to announce “Something groovy” with the new film’s title and some of the cast. Warfare and May December star Charles Melton, Companion’s Sophie Thatcher, Kristine Froseth, and Havana Rose Liu are set to star in the Danish auteur’s next film.

The Neon Demon director Nicolas Winding Refn is teaming with Neon on his latest project, Her Private Hell. Distributor Neon took to socials today to announce the mysterious feature’s stars.

Her Private Hell is set to star Sophie Thatcher, Charles Melton (Warfare), Kristine Froseth (Apostle), and Havana Rose Liu.

Of course, the announcement brings no plot details at all, though Deadline shares that “insiders say it falls in line with the edgy thrillers the auteur is known for like Drive and Bronson.” Last year, Variety reported that the filmmaker was gearing up for his return to the big screen and that that feature “will have a lot of glitter and lot of sex and violence,” Refn promised.

Charles Melton is following in Ryan Gosling’s footsteps and collaborating with iconic auteur Nicolas Winding Refn. Halle Bailey, Bernadette Peters, and Havana Rose Liu have signed on for Jesse‘s upcoming film, which will be produced by A24. Other stars in the project include Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti, Bonnie Milligan, Colton Ryan, Lilli Cooper, and Maulik Pancholy.

The movie will tell the story of “[A] shy woman [Moore] who is unexpectedly cast in a community theater musical production, going to extremes as she loses herself in the role,” according to Variety.

Jesse wrote the the lyrics and music for the film, which started production this month.

This will be Jesse‘s follow-up project to the film A Real Pain, which he wrote and directed. Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor for his role in the movie at the 2025 Oscars.
