What’s the difference between love and obsession? Find out in the Lurker trailer below.
Described as “Nightcrawler for the social media generation,” the psychological thriller opens in theaters on August 22 via Mubi.
With an incisive view to contemporary culture, Lurker presents an exhilarating take on the music industry, the blurred line between friend and fan, and our universal search for validation.
When 20-something Los Angeles retail clerk and loner Matthew encounters rising pop star Oliver, he takes the opportunity to edge his way into the in-crowd. But staying there isn’t easy.
With an entire entourage vying for attention, Matthew must prove himself to Oliver as more than just a follower. As their bond grows strained and mainstream fame appears within reach, access and proximity become a matter of life and death.
Théodore Pellerin (Beau Is Afraid) and Archie Madekwe (Saltburn) star with Zack Fox (“Abbott Elementary”), Havana Rose Liu (Bottoms), Wale Onayemi,...

Emma Seligman’s Shiva Baby drew from the well of modern cringe comedies to tell its story of a pressure cooker of a shiva. That setting kept the film firmly grounded in a recognizable reality. So it’s all the more surprising that Seligman’s follow-up, Bottoms, is a far more silly, over-the-top affair, but the film’s unique blend of deadpan and absurdist humor, and its tendency to occasionally push the boundaries of good taste, shows that Seligman is equally comfortable working at the opposite end of the comic spectrum.

A couple of months ago, we heard that Sophie Thatcher (Companion), Kristine Froseth (Sierra Burgess Is a Loser), Havana Rose Liu (No Exit), and Charles Melton (Warfare) were set to star in Her Private Hell, the latest film from director Nicolas Winding Refn. Now, Deadline has revealed the names of several more cast members. They are: Dougray Scott (Mission: Impossible II), Diego Calva (Babylon), Aoi Yamada (Perfect Days), Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool & Wolverine), and Hidetoshi Nishijima (Drive My Car). Details on the characters they’ll be playing have not been revealed, which makes sense, since we don’t have any idea what the story is, either. We’re assuming that Sophie Thatcher is the “her” of the title, but it’s not clear what the “private hell” is.
Refn is best known for making the 2011 film Drive. His other directing credits include Pusher, Bleeder, Fear X, Pusher II, Pusher III, Bronson,...

Production has already began on the Neon title which is poised for a Cannes 2026 launch. We have been following the project since it was first announced in April. Plot and character details are being kept under wraps for the project, which marks Refn’s first for the big screen since The Neon Demon, starring Elle Fanning, in 2016. Mubi is continuing to expand its business after picking up such projects as last year’s The Substance. According to Deadline, the company has now picked up the rights to the independently produced TV drama series Hal & Harper. The show comes from actor/filmmaker Cooper Raiff, whose resume includes Cha Cha Real Smooth. The business model for indie television is still testing the waters, but Mubi’s acquisition is a big win for the experimental process. The studio is set to stream the show in the U.S. and France, and it has earned good buzz after premiering at Sundance this year.
The series stars Raiff along with Lili Reinhart and Mark Ruffalo. Per Deadline, Hal & Harper “centers on two codependent siblings Hal (Raiff) and Harper (Reinhart), who are facing big life changes. The pair’s intimacy is built on a lifetime of inside jokes and shared pains,...

Exclusive: Mubi has acquired rights to Hal & Harper, the acclaimed indie TV series from actor-filmmaker Cooper Raiff (Cha Cha Real Smooth), for streaming in the U.S. and France, on the heels of its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The eight-episode family drama, co-starring Lili Reinhart and Mark Ruffalo, will premiere exclusively on the service this fall.
Lionsgate financed the series, handled the sale and distributes it worldwide.
This marks another win for independently produced television at a time when the business model is still being tested. Other recent examples of indie series that have gone on to significant streaming deals include Shane Gillis’ hit comedy Tires, which just returned for a second season, as well as Mark Duplass’ Penelope, both of which wound up at Netflix.

"We all want the same thing... I just want it more." Mubi has revealed the first official trailer for a superb thriller titled Lurker, which premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (it made it onto my Best of the Fest list). Lurker is the feature directorial debut of writer / director Alex Russell, who already made a name for himself writing the script for the "Beef" series as well as episodes of "The Bear" and "Dave" previously. He's made his mark with this one. This fantastic parasocial, paranoid film arrives to watch in the US starting this August. The film stars Théodore Pellerin, Archie Madekwe, Zack Fox, Havana Rose Liu, Wale Onayemi, Daniel Zolghadri, and Sunny Suljic. When a wannabe-famous loser working at a clothing store befriends a famous celebrity musician, he'll do anything to stay in his world and leech off of his fame. "A screw-turning psychological thriller made for the moment.

Where does the boundary between lust, obsession, fandom, and devotion lie? Alex Russell’s directorial debut “Lurker” explores the twisted nature of celebrity in Los Angeles. The feature, which wowed at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, stars Théodore Pellerin as Matthew, a socially-obsessed videographer who becomes entangled with a rising pop star, Oliver (Archie Madekwe).
Zack Fox, Havana Rose Liu, Wale Onayemi, Daniel Zolghadri and Sunny Suljic co-star. Pat Scola was the cinematographer.
Russell has been known for his writing and supervising producing work on TV series “The Bear” and “Beef.” His debut “Lurker” became one of the most buzzed-about sales titles at Sundance; it was later acquired by Mubi.
“The characters in this movie are archetypes,” Russell told IndieWire earlier this year. “I’ve seen every character in this movie 10 times over. Relating to Matthew is very important because the movie is subjective in that way, whereas a lot of movies about an obsessive person,...

Earlier this year, JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to watch Lurker, the boundary-pushing debut feature from writer/director Alex Russell, at the Sundance Film Festival. Describing the film as “a terrific blend of black comedy and psychological thriller” and “exactly the kind of movie I want to see when I hit Sundance,” Bumbray gave Lurker a 9/10 review that can be read at This Link. Recently, it was announced that film distributor Mubi (which is also a streaming service and production company) is planning to give Lurker a North American theatrical release on August 22nd – and now, with that date just two months away, a trailer for the film has dropped online. Aleksandro A24 wrapped principal photography this month on Jesse Eisenberg’s untitled musical comedy, marking a rapid turnaround since cameras rolled in April at various community theatre venues and studio stages. The film, which reunites Eisenberg with producers Emma Stone’s Fruit Tree banner and A24, stars Julianne Moore as a withdrawn woman suddenly thrust into a local musical production by Paul Giamatti’s charismatic director.
Halle Bailey, Havana Rose Liu and Bernadette Peters join an ensemble that also features Bonnie Milligan, Colton Ryan, Lilli Cooper and Maulik Pancholy, reflecting Eisenberg’s ambition to blend veteran talent with emerging voices. Julianne Moore celebrated the premiere of her next project, “Sirens” on Netflix, on Tuesday, May 20 at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. The limited series features Moore alongside Meghann Fahy, Milly Alcock, Kevin Bacon, and Glenn Howerton in the Margot Robbie-produced project from “Maid” creator Molly Smith Metzler.
On the carpet, IndieWire caught up with Moore about Jesse Eisenberg’s upcoming A24 musical film. As for what she can tease, Moore told us that she will indeed be showing off her vocal chops, a follow-up to singing a little bit in 2021’s “Dear Evan Hansen”: “Yes, I am. I’m singing. “Jesse Eisenberg is just the most extraordinary person,” she continued. “He’s so incredibly creative. I feel so fortunate to be able to work with him. This is very different, but I think that he can have sort of a satirical worldview.

Michelle Pfeiffer at Christmastime? No, it’s not a “Batman Returns” sequel, but it may be just as campy. The beloved actress who recently (finally!) received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is leading Michael Showalter’s holiday feature “Oh. What. Fun.” alongside a slew of It-indie actors.
Pfeiffer plays matriarch Claire Clauster, whose perfectionist tendencies always make for the best Christmases. However, when her kids forget about their own mother over the holidays, she’s forced to reflect on priorities. Directing the best American film of 2024 that’s also the uber-rare piece of experimental art to screen in multiplexes and––you know where this is headed––massive box-office bomb would typically spell the end of a director’s career. It’s to his fortune and ours alike that Robert Zemeckis’ well never quite runs dry, ergo: Deadline reports he’s set to direct Jennifer Lopez in the Netflix thriller The Last Mrs. Parrish, an adaptation of Liv Constantine’s novel that’ll be scripted by John Gatins (Flight) and Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton).

Whether you're a hardcore gamer who was there on the front lines when "The Last of Us" and "The Last of Us: Part II" first released on PlayStation or a newcomer to the HBO series, the franchise counts millions of fans who have encountered this post-apocalyptic story and fallen in love with the characters involved. By now, everyone knows the property's heart and soul derives from the lovable dynamic between main leads Ellie and Joel. Much like the first game, season 1 of the show focused almost entirely on their relationship as they traveled from one corner of the infection-ridden United States to another. But with the release of "The Last of Us" season 2 (which I reviewed quite glowingly for /Film here), the scale of the adventure has now expanded considerably ... and, with it, a whole ensemble of supporting characters for viewers to keep track of in the episodes to come.
