As an Icelandic artist living in New York after 9/11, Björk felt out of place amid the feverish patriotism and xenophobia that proliferated in the wake of the terrorist attacks on the United States. While the Iraq War—and her neighbors—raged, the singer tended to her newborn daughter, Ísadóra, rekindling her fascination with the body and its generative powers.
Björk’s 2001 album Vespertine was built around the quietness and intimacy of domestic life, made tactile by hyper-specific, sensual lyricism. Inspired by her relationship with Matthew Barney, the album is bounded in scope by the four walls of the home, and the process of creating it was similarly insular, with Björk spending hours assembling microbeats on her laptop.
Committed to an emphatically different production approach for her next album, Medúlla, Björk eschewed Vespertine’s electronic beats and custom-made music boxes in favor of one instrument: the human voice. By embracing a cappella music,...

Warning: some Spoilers for Strays to follow.
Dara Taylor collaborated with director Josh Greenbaum for the second time on the music for Strays, taking inspiration from their previous project, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar. Taylor had early involvement in the film, reading the script before shooting began and working on thematic ideas. This allowed her to immerse herself in the story and develop a strong connection to the characters. The music for Strays utilized a broad spectrum of instruments, from acoustic guitar to orchestra, to capture the emotions and tones of different scenes. In addition to traditional instruments, hip-hop elements were also incorporated with the help of DJ Cheapshot, Spinowitz, and Rahzel.
Strays is a new comedy that in many ways follows in the footsteps of live-action animal adventure films like Homeward Bound, but with a raunchy twist. Written by Dan Perrault (American Vandal) and directed by...

The new movie Joy Ride, a riotously funny comedy about a group of four Asian-American pals — Audrey (Ashley Park of Emily in Paris), Kat (Stephanie Hsu, Oscar-nominated star of Everything Everywhere All at Once), Lolo (Sherry Cola), and Deadeye (Sabrina Wu) — who head to China to try to help Audrey close a business deal (and find her birth mother), was originally titled Joy Fuck Club. It served as a recognition of those that came before them in the Asian cinema canon, but also a reminder of just how gleefully chaotic this road-trip adventure is.
