The daughter of Dr. Raymond Leonard and Lucy Jane (Moseley) von Steinberger, Lucianne Goldberg grew up in Alexandria, Virginia. Her father was a government physicist, and her mother was a physiotherapist. Goldberg graduated from George Washington University in 1957. She and her first husband, William Cummings, separated after three years and eventually divorced. She later remarried.
