‘Chlorine’ Review: Shallow Indie Tropes Lost in the Deep End of the Pool
The recent popularity of independent films in popular cinema has led to an unbearable reliance on certain indie “tropes,” in which the same characters, themes, and especially music genres, seem to be used again and again. While viewers once may have sought out indie films precisely because they avoid the cliches and common themes of mainstream films, the indie genre itself has become so pervasive that it now has its own hackneyed patterns. This reliance can be evidenced in Jay Alaimo‘s Chlorine. Vincent D’Onofrio and Kyra Sedgwick star as a New England husband and wife who are struggling to define themselves and fit in with their upper-class friends and neighbors. Desperation and the desire to provide for their two children who they are slowly losing pushes the couple into a bad real estate deal, intermingling them with a supporting cast of shady characters. Chlorine opens with teenaged Cynthia at a swim meet getting her period...

Review: Charming And Playful 'Chlorine' Paints A Harmless, Enjoyable Picture Of Upstate America
“America is not a young land; it is old and dirty and evil before the settlers, before the Indians. The evil is there waiting.” That's the William S. Burroughs quote that opens Jay Alaimo's “Chlorine” but not before we get a close-up of a moustached nose taking a bump of coke to the sounds of uplifting violins on the soundtrack. Quick flashes of some of the major characters clearly hating their lives appear in rapid succession and everything fades to white to reveal Burroughs' quote on evil. But thanks to what precedes and follows those ominously serious words, it's clear that the quote is only an additional ingredient to the stir-fry of energy that Alaimo's message is part of. As Vincent D'Onofrio's Roger bumbles around in a bookstore looking at a nudie magazine, Tijuana Panther's “Redheaded Girl” kicks in as a reminder that you're about to watch an...

Wet Behind the Ears: Alaimo’s Suburban Malaise a Standard Procedure

We’ve come to expect a certain amount of functional dysfunction to be featured in independent films depicting the decomposition of nuclear American families all tuckered out by their dogged insistence on living out the illusion of a proscribed way of existence. You can count Jay Alaimo’s latest film, Chlorine, as an overly familiar example of hitting all the customary checkmarks, including a more pressing and dramatic back story used to tie its disparate characters together.

Issues of class and how we’re conditioned to always hunt for loopholes to score upgrades seems to be an overarching theme but between a handful of moments where Alaimo is trying too hard to score pathos or convey information, the film is a stagnant, emotional plateau, managing only to ingrain us with an apathetic attitude towards its characters.

It almost...

Exclusive: Elisabeth Röhm & Kyra Sedgwick Are Shopping And Investing In Clip From 'Chlorine'
Greed and hubris is the fabric that spins many stories—just see this year's Best Picture nominees "The Wolf Of Wall Street" and "American Hustle"—with those two qualities serving as the dark undercurrent of ambition. They make for intriguing stories, and co-writer/director Jay Alaimo has one cooking in the upcoming "Chlorine." Starring Vincent D’Onofrio, Kyra Sedgwick, Elisabeth Röhm, Dreama Walker and Tom Sizemore, the story follows Georgie Lent, who pushes her husband Roger into finding a way to invest in the market bubble in the hopes that their family can be saved with the money they are sure to make. When local tennis pro and part-time drug dealer, Pat, comes to Roger for investment advice, Roger sees his opportunity. Torn by the reality that his family could be saved by this dirty money, Roger finds himself staring down the barrel of a moral conundrum. And in this exclusive clip,...

Chlorine: A Tiresome Dramatic Comedy Made With Cliches
Vincent D'Onofrio, Kyra Sedgwick, Tom Sizemore, Ryan Donowho, Michele Hicks, Elisabeth Röhm, Flora Cross, Rhys Coiro, and Dreama Walker in Chlorine (2013)
Chlorine begins, perhaps a bit pompously, with a quote from William S. Burroughs — though the only affinity the film shares with the author of Naked Lunch is a haphazard approach to structure.

While the effect was probably not deliberate, Jay Alaimo's tiresome dramatic comedy often seems as if it were assembled using the cut-up technique favored by Burroughs and his beat contemporaries, in which clichés are thrown together and arbitrarily rearranged.

The premise alone suggests the extent of the screenplay's unoriginality: Roger Lent (Vincent D'Onofrio), an ineffectual banker long resigned to middle-class complacency, finds himself embroiled in an investment scam orchestrated by an unscrupulous colleague, who in fact conspires to fleece the co...

Sienna Guillory is a Woman Possesed in The Wicked Within
“Resident Evil’s” Sienna Guillory has been a bad girl in director Jay Alaimo’s horror outing “The Wicked Within”. I guess it makes sense. She’s battled zombies, so why not get possessed by one? Well, a ghost, anyway. Still undead, right? Check out an early trailer and a poster for the film “The Wicked Within” below. Kyra Sedgwick To Front Sci-Fi Indie Rays Of Light
From 2005 to 2012, Kyra Sedgwick's film career took a backseat to the shooting schedule of her TNT crime drama series The Closer. But after seven seasons and scads of Emmy and Golden Globes nominations.as well as a few wins.the show drew to a close last summer. But don't cry for Kyra. She bounced back with the hit horror flick The Possession. Though critically scorned, the $14 million Dibbuk Box thriller scored at the box office, earning more than $76 mil worldwide. Then her next release, Kill Your Darlings drew wild praise at its Sundance premiere. With two more movies already in post (John Herzfeld's drama Reach Me, and Jay Alaimo's dramedy Chlorine), Sedgwick is lining up her next gig with a first-time filmmaker. Variety reports Sedgwick has signed on to star in Rays of Light, a sci-fi film from Batan Silva. A well-established first assistant director, Silva has...

John Hawkes
John Hawkes Books Roles in ‘Chronicle’ and ‘The Playroom’
John Hawkes
Anything that puts John Hawkes in more movies is Ok by me. And the great, until recently underrated actor has just bagged two new roles, so here's a pair of films to put on your watch list. First up is Chronicle, about which we've got little info. Looks like Justin Long will appear alongside Mr. Hawkes and Ryan Philippe, with possible additions that include Mickey Rourke, Helena Bonham Carter, Kate Mara, Danny Masterson and Vincent D’Onofrio. Jay Alaimo directs, and the plot reportedly [1] features "two childhood friends reunite to launch the biggest marijuana-dealing operation in New York City." As long as one of those friends is John Hawkes, we're in good shape. [The Playlist [2]] After the break, info about The Playroom, in which the actor reunites with his Deadwood co-star Molly Parker. Between these two films, The Playroom is the one I'm really psyched for. Because I like Molly Parker just...

Justin Long, John Hawkes & Ryan Phillippe Join Jay Alaimo’s ‘Chronicle’
Jay Alaimo, the writer-director of Pretzel, Slingshot, and Chlorine, has received a hefty group of cast members for his upcoming project, Chronicle. According to The Playlist, Justin Long, John Hawkes (Winter’s Bone), and Ryan Phillippe have officially joined the cast, while other big names such as Helena Bonham Carter, Mickey Rourke, and Kate Mara have been circling the project, but have yet to commit. Either way, it looks as if Alaimo‘s status as a director is growing. The report describes Chronicle‘s plot as being “about two childhood friends who reunite to launch the biggest marijuana dealership in New York City.”

Filming dates for the project are unknown at this point, and seeing as how Chlorine is still in post-production, a release before the end of 2011 appears to be highly unlikely. Perhaps if Hawkes loses out on a nomination for Winter’s Bone, Chronicle could be another chance...

According to the Gramery Park Pictures website, Mickey Rourke, Helena Bonham Carter, Kate Mara, Danny Masterson and Vincent D'Onofrio were in discussions to join the cast as of last month, but no word if they will be signing on or have simply moved on (our guess is probably the latter). Kyra Sedgwick Dives Into Chlorine
Kyra Sedgwick in The Closer (2005)
Kyra Sedgwick and Vincent D'Onofrio don't instantly make us think they'd work as a married couple, but perhaps that's the point for writer/director Jay Alaimo's new indie drama, Chlorine.Because the family at the centre of the film - with Sedgwick as the appearance-obsessed matriarch and D'Onofrio as the lacklustre hubby - are too busy fighting to realise that they've entered into a very dodgy real estate deal.Alaimo has been trying to get the film together for a few years now. He previous got it set up with Ray Liotta and Demi Moore, but scheduling issues and, more importantly, Hurricane Katrina, derailed his efforts. Now he's moved the drama to New Jersey, which makes us think it'll be a little like The Sopranos, but with slightly less blood.
