Donnie Yen is continuing his return to the director's chair after a 20-year break with The Prosecutor. Having started his career as a stuntman in Hong Kong, Yen first began finding success with the TV adaptation of Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury, as well as choreographing and starring in numerous Hollywood action movies, including Blade II. Though having worked as an action director multiple times throughout his career, Yen's list of full directorial efforts is relatively smaller, ranging from 1997's Legend of the Wolf to 2004's Protégé de la Rose Noire, after which he wouldn't direct again until 2023's Sakra.

The action’s hot but the dramatic temperature varies in “The Prosecutor,” a flashy combination of Hong Kong crime story and legal drama starring and directed by Donnie Yen. The veteran action star is convincing and charismatic as a cop who quits the force to become a crusading Department of Justice prosecutor but is let down by a screenplay that’s prone to bouts of melodrama in and out of the courtroom. Entertaining enough despite its flaws, “The Prosecutor” has topped the Hong Kong box office for two weeks (thus far) since opening on Dec. 21 and ought to perform well in limited U.S. theatrical release from Jan. 10.
Containing less action than a regular Donnie Yen film, and with his character delivering lines such as “I’m getting old, I can’t catch thieves anymore” and “I just got old” as a reason for his career change, “The Prosecutor” sparked...

Stephen Belber wrote his story Tape as a play back in 1999, so it was always intended to get multiple interpretations over the years, with productions that would take place in different locations, with different casts and directors. Productions of Tape have been performed in Louisville, Kentucky; New York City; Dublin, Ireland; London, England; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Williamstown, Massachusetts; Buxton, England; Orlando, Florida; Alexandria, Minnesota; and Tehran, Iran, among other places. In 2001, Richard Linklater directed a film adaptation of the story that starred Ethan Hawke, Robert Sean Leonard, and Uma Thurman. And now, Variety reports that Tape has gotten a Hong Kong reimagining. A trailer can be seen in the embed above.

“Tape,” a Hong Kong remake of Richard Linklater’s iconic 2001 psychological thriller film of the same title, is heading for the American Film Market and theatrical release in its adopted territory. In anticipation of those steps, the producers are unreeling a “Tape” trailer.
“Tape” explores the fallout from a traumatic event at a high school graduation party, forcing the three former friends to confront their past in a story that delves into themes of power, manipulation, and the subjective nature of truth. The remake transposes the story from the U.S. to Hong Kong, a region that has yet to fully reckon with the #MeToo movement, while adapting to today’s technology-dependent age.

There’s something immensely satisfying about a prison escape movie. A group of outlaws planning a breakout only for it to all go to hell come freedom day is a reliable formula for success. Part of what makes such movies so entertaining is the loveable crooks behind the plotting, which is precisely what you get with Ho Pong Mak’s “Breakout Brothers”. The prison-break film combines the best of action and comedy to be a thrilling romp full of memorable characters.
