Some films you know whether or not you want to see as soon as you read about them, others, like Slaughterhouse on the Hill, you need to think about. On the one hand, it was written and directed by Tom Devlin who also made Teddy Told Me To as well as providing the effects for films ranging from Reel Evil and Ten Inch Mutant Ninja Turtles: The XXX Parody to Alien Planet and Invaders from Proxima B.

On the other, it was released by Cinema Epoch, the company that gave us, among others, Amityville Cop, Sinful and Amityville Emanuelle, which despite name-checking both of those prolific franchises contains neither scares nor anything remotely erotic. But even a blind squirrel finds an occasional acorn, so...

"One extra push, one extra punch - that's all it takes." With the Toronto Film Festival coming to an end this weekend, we wanted to feature a short film made in Toronto showing how resilient and wonderful the city is. Heart of Resilience is a short film commissioned by the City of Toronto, made by filmmaking brothers Ryan Freeman and Brad Freeman, who run the studio Lossless Creative out of Toronto. This is the story of Mjko (official website), a non-profit boxing gym located in the lower income neighborhood of South Parkdale. The film shows how there are so many people and organizations working across Toronto to make it more resilient, and it's an uplifting look at how friendship and openness make a big difference in society. This is a really lovely documentary about regular people and how boxing has changed them. Watch below. Thanks to Ryan for the tip on this.

"Do not let your spirit be influenced by your body, or your body be influenced by your spirit." A superb documentary short titled Two Heavens As One, or 二天一, has debuted online and it's a must watch. This is the latest short film made by filmmaker Ryan Freeman, who also made the fantastic doc short Being Batman previously. The short introduces us to a "modern-day samurai" named Jason Nip, who is among the 12th generation of students to train in the ways of Miyamoto Musashi, a famous swordsmen and martial artist in Japanese history. Nip is also the Sensei of the only Dojo in North America to train and teach Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu, the sword fighting style developed by Musashi using one short and one long sword. So, Film Friday continues with another episode from Soul Fire Rising called "I Give You My Soul," which is so thick with religious themes that one might wonder: is the source Christian influenced? After some investigation this webseries is not Christian sourced, but simply from the twisted writing mind of Kurt Patino (Cup O' Joe). Also, the soul is heavily referenced in the series, and here is that lesson you were hoping to avoid, the soul is an ancient reference to the heart as the seat of human consciousness from Greek philosophy. However, science has refuted this belief and shown that the mind is, of course, the seat of man's consciousness, behaviours and the instigator for emotions. Have a watch as character Lilith demands the soul of others which could be given a way freely as this concept is not based in reality!
