The Bengali-language feature marks the directorial debut of cinematographer Saumyananda Sahi (Oscar nominated “All That Breathes”) and editor Tanushree Das (“Eeb Allay Ooo!”). The filmmakers have unveiled a clip exclusively for Variety.

The film about brothers in Delhi, India who rescue injured birds of prey, especially the black kite, will be added to Criterion’s library, according to an announcement from Sideshow and Submarine Deluxe. “[Criterion] has acquired Tvod rights and will announce details for a future home video release at a later date,” a release stated, noting that the film will be available for purchase or rental on iTunes, Apple, Amazon, and Vudu. All That Breathes is currently available for viewing on HBO and HBO Max.

‘Banshees’ duo, ’Navalny’, ’Aftersun’ among early winners.

The 2023 Bafta Film Awards show is taking place today (February 19) from London’s Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank this year (it was previously at the Royal Albert Hall).

The show started at around 18:00 UK time, finishing at approximately 21:00, and will be broadcast with a time delay on BBC One starting at 19:00, with the final four awards broadcast live for the first time.

This year’s five Oscar-nominated documentary filmmakers agree: In an especially crowded content landscape, finding a story that they have to tell is critical. “Compelled, obsessed — I mean, you have to really love [a topic]. ’All That Breathes’ producer Aman Mann spoke to Ians about the movie and the challenges the makers had to deal with when they were shooting the injured birds.

The documentary feature, co-produced by Sen, Mann and Teddy Leifer of Rise Films, has already won the prestigious Golden Eye at Cannes 2022 and the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance 2022 World Cinema Documentary Competition.

Recalling how the film came about, Aman saidsaid: "I think we are still wondering about it because the film’s journey has been beyond our wildest expectations. It all started with a thought process. Shaunak was pursuing a fellowship in the UK in 2018 when he became very interested in human-animal relationships, particularly in spaces such as the city.

"When he returned to Delhi, one day, he was sitting in traffic, and he was looking at the sky, and he saw birds circling above as if they were about to fall off.

Nominees have been announced for the 95th Oscars and members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences fell in line with most critics groups, awarding Everything Everywhere All At Once the most nominations with 11. The 2023 Academy Awards also recognized All Quiet on the Western Front with nine nominations, making it the eighth feature film to score nominations in both the Best Picture and Best International Feature categories.

The Banshees of Inisherin also picked up nine nominations, including the first-ever Oscar nominations for Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon. Elvis earned eight nominations, with Austin Butler picking up his first Oscar nomination for channeling the King of Rock and Roll.

The year’s biggest breakout indie hit, A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” led the pack of nominees for the 95th Academy Awards that were announced this morning, with 11 nods, including Best Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actress (x2) and Supporting Actor. It was followed by Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” and Searchlight’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” with nine apiece. Warner Bros.’ “Elvis” picked up eight nods and Universal’s “The Fabelmans” took seven.

A total of 45 feature films received nominations with 14 nominations for ‘All Quiet on the Western Front,’ 10 nominations for ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ and ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once,’ 9 nominations for ‘Elvis’ and 5 nominations for the Cate Blanchett led ‘Tár.’

Actors Hayley Atwell and Toheeb Jimoh announced the nominations via a live broadcast from BAFTA 195 Piccadilly in London. First-time nominees feature heavily this year, with 14 of the 24 nominees in the performance categories receiving their first BAFTA Film nomination. “All That Breathes,” a documentary about two brothers who run a refuge for birds that have been injured by the pollution in New Dehli, has been named the best nonfiction film of 2022 at the 16th annual Cinema Eye Honors ceremony, which took place on Thursday night at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens, New York.

“All That Breathes” previously won the top award at the International Documentary Association’s IDA Documentary Awards, the other major award devoted to nonfiction film. It is also on the 15-film shortlist for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Laura Poitras won the award for directing for “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” while “Navalny” won the award for production.

The 38th annual event, held at L.A.’s Paramount Theater, was hosted by comic-actor Jenny Yang. Prizes were announced in 18 categories. The show was also LiveStreamed on IDA’s YouTube channel and the recording is now available.

There were 16 competitive categories and two special categories, the ABC News VideoSource Award and the Pare Lorentz Award.

This year’s shortlists and nominees were selected by independent committees of 310 documentary makers, curators, critics, and industry experts from 52 countries. IDA received 806 submissions in all categories, 40 of which are internationally produced or coproduced projects from 86 countries.

The first major awards ceremony of the year took place tonight, with The Gotham Film & Media Institute hosting the 32nd Annual Gotham Awards at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. Leading the pack of winners was Everything Everywhere All at Once, which picked up Best Feature, while its star Ke Huy Quan picked up a trophy, alongside Danielle Deadwyler (Till), Gracija Filipovic (Murina), Charlotte Wells (Aftersun), Todd Field (Tár), All That Breathes, and Happening.

Last year the group previewed three of the five Oscar nominees for Best Documentary Feature, including the winner “Summer of Soul” as well as IDA champ “Flee” and “Writing with Fire.” The year before that they were just as accurate when IDA winner “Crip Camp” was nominated along with “Collective” and “Time,” but Oscar champ “My Octopus Teacher” was snubbed.

“All that Breathes” and “Fire of Love” led all films in nominations for the International Documentary Association’s 38th annual IDA Documentary Awards, which were announced Friday morning.

“All That Breathes,” a lyrical film by Shaunak Sen about two brothers in New Delhi who care for birds that fall from the polluted skies, received four nominations, including Best Feature Documentary, and was also named the winner of the Pare Lorentz Award for a film showing commitment to social justice and the environment. Sara Dosa’s “Fire of Love,” about a married couple that spent their lives studying volcanoes, landed five nominations.

Other films that received multiple IDA nominations included “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” “A House Made of Splinters,” “No Simple Way Home” and “The Pawnshop.”

The Cinema Eye Honors has announced the full slate of nominees for its 16th Annual Awards Ceremony meant to recognize outstanding artistry and craft in nonfiction filmmaking.

Two National Geographic films — Sara Dosa’s “Fire of Love” and Alex Pritz’s “The Territory”— not only led all nominees with seven nominations (including Outstanding Nonfiction Feature for both), but tied the record for most nominations in a single year. Next in line is the Cannes-winning feature, “All That Breathes,” directed by Shaunak Sen, which got six nominations. The Laura Poitras-directed documentary “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” and Payal Kapadia’s “A Night of Knowing Nothing” followed with four nominations.

This year’s awards mark the first time in Cinema Eye history that five women were nominated for Outstanding Direction, with “Beba” director Rebeca Huntt and “Descendant” filmmaker Margaret Brown joining Sara Dosa, Payal Kapadia, Laura Poitras, and Shaunak Sen in the category.

“Fire of Love” and “The Territory” led all films in nominations for the 16th annual Cinema Eye Honors, awards that were established in 2007 to honor all aspects of nonfiction filmmaking.

“Fire of Love” is a documentary from Sara Dosa about scientists Katia and Maurice Krafft, set against the volcanoes they spent much of their lives studying; “The Territory” is director Alex Pritz’s look at an indigenous Brazilian tribe threatened by deforestation. Todd Field’s drama “Tár,” starring Cate Blanchett as a troubled musician, leads the pack with five nominations for the 2022 Gotham Awards, the Gotham Film & Media Institute announced on Tuesday in New York City by actress Angelica Ross (“Pose”) and the Gotham’s executive director Jeffery Sharp.

In the kick-off to the 2022 awards season, “Tár” was followed in the film nomination tally by “Aftersun,” which received four nominations, and “Everything Everywhere All at Once, “The Inspection,” and “Women Talking” with three nominations.

With 15 total nominations, indie distributor A24 decisively led the tally among studios, followed by Focus Features and United Artists Releasing, each with six nominations.

The nominations for the 2022 Gotham Awards have been revealed.

Tár leads the film nominees with five nods, followed by Aftersun with four nominations. Meanwhile, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Inspection and Women Talking each scored three nominations.

Tár, Aftersun and Everything Everywhere All at Once are all nominated for best feature along with The Cathedral and Dos Estaciones.

On the TV side, the following shows each received two nominations: Abbott Elementary, Pachinko, Station Eleven, Severance, This Is Going to Hurt, Yellowjackets and As We See It, which was recently canceled after one season on Amazon’s Prime Video.

The nominations, in 12 categories across film and TV, recognize 23 feature films, 15 series and 35 performances.

HBO Documentary Films has bought worldwide television rights for Cannes Special Screenings title “All That Breathes.”

The film is the only Sundance movie to screen as part of Cannes’ Official Selection this year — a feat all the more impressive given Cannes is not known for its documentary programming. In Park City, the film picked up the Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinema Documentary Competition.

Directed by Shaunak Sen (“Cities of Sleep”), “All That Breathes” follows two brothers who run a bird hospital dedicated to rescuing injured black kites, which are a staple in the skies of New Delhi, India.

New works from filmmakers including Chang Tso-chi, Huang Ji, Pierre Sarraf, Tan Chui Mui and Jessey Tsang are among the 21 projects selected for the Work-in-Progress section (Wip) of this year’s Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum (Haf).

The Wip projects will be presented online alongside the main programme of Haf (March 15-17) and Hong Kong Filmart (March 15-18). Most are at the post-production stage, with several currently in production. The line-up includes 10 documentaries and 11 fiction films, mostly from Asia, with several European productions and co-productions.

The Australian International Documentary Conference (Aidc) has revealed the 15 teams that will take part in its international pitching showcase, The FACTory.

Now in its sixth year, the annual event for new documentary and factual projects will be held online, giving selected participants the opportunity to present their work in front of the largest contingent of international decision-makers to participate in Aidc, including funders, buyers, broadcasters, sales agents, and distributors.

Shortlisted teams for The FACTory will pitch across three strands: Central Showcase, New Talent Showcase and Rough Cut Showcase.

Alice Burgin, Aidc CEO and conference director, said the 15 projects selected for 2021 were “exceptionally strong and exciting”.

“Our aim is to help these teams make valuable connections with our international decision-makers and take the first or second step towards making these ambitious factual productions,” she said.
