Oru Russell is a Nigerian filmmaker propelled by deep experiences of the human condition with a keen interest on the heroic stories of the everyday man. As a graduate of Theatre and Dramatic studies he employs the elements of the theater while nurturing the aesthetics of the cinema to create a synergy in African storytelling and cinema .
He is a trained screenwriter and director, and an ardent believer of the Auteur theory, with himself as the vision, the world as the story and Art as the language. He believes it is the most impressive way to tell the human story. He is part of a generation of filmmakers who learned filmmaking by studying the techniques of great filmmakers and films.
His first short film Alone is a backyard-indie experimental film about hope in a stereotypical world, it takes a retrospective look at Sickle Cell Disease, Child marriage and Culture. His style of filmmaking is heavily stylistic with a lot of emphasis on arts, symbolism and metaphorical aesthetics inspired by the natural environment. His stories focus on the everyday man and the challenges faced by them.
Time, History, Childhood, Politics and Art are the very essence of his writing. As a keen observer of life, he is always willing to push himself beyond his creative limits towards the artistic freedom he so craves. A dedicated and ardent follower of all waves of world cinema.
A fan of great filmmakers such as Francois Truffaut, Andrey Tarkovsky, Yashizuro Ozu, Orson Welles and Sergei Leone.
