Summer used to be a time when your TV choices were pretty limited. But then then the cable networks wised up and realized it was a perfect season to launch new programming, since their broadcast competition had little to offer besides reruns. As a result, the summer TV schedule now has enough to keep you thoroughly entertained - a relief on those days when the heat forces you inside and prostrate on the couch.

Whether your idea of great summer TV is light drama, ridiculous reality, supernatural angst or smartass comedy there seems to be something for everyone. Here are the new shows that have our curiosity piqued and the returning shows we're excited to see back.

I don't normally push people's merchandise for them, but Nerdcore releases the best calendars, and this year they went with a horror theme. Nerdcore's 4th Annual calendar features pinups of all varieties: cover model Jana Jordan (pictured) getting paranormal with a TV set, sultry scream queen Justine Joli (pictured) in the most vintage of psychotic shower scenes, Bobbi Starr (pictured) sewn together (literally) in a more naked version of Frankenstein, as well as Aria Giovanni, Kayla Jane Danger, Karlie Montana, Mosh (pictured), and Zoli Suicide getting their scream on. The calendar features regular and nerdy holidays, including over one hundred important holidays for geeks, including: Major movie releases; conventions like San Diego Comic-Con, Alternative Press Expo, etc. ; anniversaries for major franchises and cult classics; birthdays for of genre favorite creators, actors, writers, and directors; and key fictional happenings, from obscure to awesome.

Many in the industry wondered if this would be the end of a career that had seemed, only days earlier, so promising.

Spike TV has ordered 11 episodes of James Gunn's PG Porn, whose pilot episode 'Nailing Your Wife' has garnered over 1.7 million views since its debut on October 8 (200,000 of which were in the first 24 hours). The pilot starred Dr. Horrible's Nathan Fillion and adult entertainment actress Aria Giovanni, and generated over 1 million views within five days. The 12 episode season will feature a new episode each month, beginning with January's 'Roadside Ass-sistance' (above), featuring adult entertainment star Sasha Grey. The project is produced by The Good Boys—Scooby-Doo auteur James Gunn and brothers Brian and Sean (Gilmore Girls), in conjunction with Safran Digital Group, and is aimed at people who enjoy everything about porn, except the sex.

In the first episode of James Gunn’s PG Porn - a web series “for people who love everything about porn…except the sex” - Nathan Fillion nails Aria Giovanni. Literally. In a contrived, makeshift set with an aesthetic and soundtrack reminiscent of the era of XXX where a thin Ron Jeremy hung his rising star, Fillion accidentally takes Giovanni out of commission with nail gun just as she was going down. “Violent misogyny self-righteously disguised as humor” or not, the premiere episode of the series produced by Safran Digital didn’t turn me on because it was too much like the real thing. Porn does a great job of making fun of porn. When wooden acting and low-budget camp are already staples in an industry, you need more than wooden acting and low-budget camp to get a decent laugh. And that’s why the second and third installments are so good.

PG Porn is the brainchild of James Gunn, the writer of Slither and the Dawn of the Dead remake. Oh, and Tromeo and Juliet.

The Big Idea is that this series of short films is for people who like everything about pornography...except the sex. So we get a bunch of dirty double entendres, bad acting, brief intimate contact, and nothing else. We also get to see "legitimate" actors mingling on screen with porn stars, none of them named Ron Jeremy.

Sixteen years ago, we got Beethoven -- not Ludwig, but rather the big ol' St. Bernard. Just in case four sequels and a stint on television wasn't enough for you, The Hollywood Reporter posts that Universal is releasing yet another direct-to-dvd sequel on December 30 -- Beethoven's Big Break. I guess they gave up punning on Ludwig with their titles. But just because it's not going to the big screen doesn't mean you can't see the pup in huge glory -- it seems that a giant Beethoven balloon will be part of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade this year. I bet it'll be cuter than the movie.

If you like to surf around the web for entertainment news, you might have heard about an upcoming new web project called James Gunn's PG Porn. The writer of classics like Tromeo and Juliet and more shmeh flicks like Scooby Doo 2, Gunn teamed up with his brothers Brian and Sean (Kirk from Gilmore Girls) to create a family-friendly world of porn.

That's right -- vignettes where the delivery man actually delivers what he's supposed to with no added packages. (Read Gunn's take on it here.) Each time, mainstream actors will be teamed with porn stars for these little clips, which will be aired over at Spike.com. First up: Nathan Fillion and Aria Giovanni in Nailing Your Wife. So I wonder: who else could benefit from this insane, and possibly hilarious, idea?
