Straight Outta Compton: 6 Things That Actually Happened (& 6 Things That Were Fictionalized)
Image
Straight Outta Compton mixes fact and fiction, creating a more cinematic experience. Ice Cube really did smash a Priority Records office after they failed to fulfill their promise. While some events were accurate, the movie took liberties with the band's story for dramatic effect.

The 2015 movie about the notorious hip-hop group, N.W.A., brought their incredible true story to the big screen and the dramatic biopic left many wondering how accurate is Straight Outta Compton. Directed by F. Gary Gray, the director behind films like Friday, The Negotiator, and Set It Off, the film shows the origins of N.W.A. while diving into the personal lives of Eazy-e, Dr. Dre, Mc Ren, DJ Yella, and rapper turned actor Ice Cube. Like most biopics, Straight Outta Compton mixes facts with fiction to create a more cinematic experience.

Because Straight Outta Compton mixes fact and fiction, it does leave the audience with a lot of questions.

How Two Actors Played Tupac In The Straight Outta Compton Recording Scene
Image
Tupac Shakur's appearance in Straight Outta Compton is brief but impactful, with two actors portraying him: Marcc Rose and Darris Love. Marcc Rose, who plays Tupac on screen, closely resembles the rapper with his eyes, eyebrows, and posture, while Darris Love provides his vocals. Marcc Rose portrayed Tupac in another project, Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G., but his performance was limited in showing the rapper's personality.

The celebrated rapper Tupac appears in one scene in Straight Outta Compton, but he's played by two actors. Straight Outta Compton is an underrated musical biopic that sadly didn't leave as much of a mark as maybe it should have. Released in 2015, the same year as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, Inside Out, and many other celebrated movies, it was always going to be difficult for Straight Outta Compton to make waves. That's unfortunate because...

N.W.A, Gladys Knight Score Laughs, Praise With Lifetime Achievement Grammys
Image
Ice Cube said he never expected to be onstage accepting a gilded gramophone with his fellow N.W.A members, but that’s what happened Saturday when he, Mc-Ren, DJ Yella and the mother and son of late rapper Eazy-e received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy at the Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards.

“My man, Dr. Dre, is not here. He wanted to make sure I let you know he’s not hating. He a billionaire. He got shit to do,” Cube said to laughter and applause. He thanked Dre for his “brilliance,...

The True Story Behind 'Straight Outta Compton'
Image
When Straight Outta Compton first blew up on the screen during the summer of 2015, the fascination with the crew dubbed the World's Most Dangerous Group was revived. The film tells the true story of the N.W.A. rap group that emerged from the city's tough streets in Compton, California. The rap group that was led by Dr. Dre (Corey Hawkins), Eazy-e (Jason Mitchell), Ice Cube (O'Shea Jackson Jr.), Mc Ren (Aldis Hodge), and DJ Yella (Neil Brown Jr.) began in the late 1980s and revolutionized gangsta-rap and hip-hop with their honest tales of police brutality and their lives in the streets. Their music even brought interest to the city of Compton, with many curious to see just how dangerous the neighborhoods were because of how N.W.A. made them seem. And as someone who has grown up in South Los Angeles all her life, yes, this group, along with other now-notable actors,...

‘The Doc,’ Documentary About Rapper Who Lost His Voice in Car Accident, Sells to Vertical Entertainment (Exclusive)
Image
Vertical Entertainment has landed North American rights to “The Doc,” a documentary about a rap legend whose life and career was upended after a near-fatal accident.

The Doc, a hip-hop lyricist and producer who wrote for Nwa and Dr. Dre, was involved in a 1989 car crash that took his voice. “The Doc,” directed Dave Caplan, picks up 30 years later as he considers a dangerous experimental surgery that could restore his vocal cords.

Vertical will release the movie in theaters in the spring of 2023, following its world premiere at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

“The Doc is an incredible talent and visionary who helped usher the hip-hop movement into mainstream America,” Peter Jarowey, a partner at Vertical, said in a statement. “As his remarkable life is revealed on screen, it is like watching the history of hip-hop unfold before your very eyes as witnessed by industry legends who count him as a friend,...

Ice Cube ‘Ain’t Gonna Shed No Tears’ Over Jerry Heller’s Death
Jerry Heller’s family says he would have wanted the surviving members of N.W.A at his funeral, but they probably shouldn’t expect an appearance by Ice Cube.
